The Chosen can be view on You Tube and a host of other platforms. I think it is very well done, but not perfect, and thought provoking. Any other opinions?

Perhaps you can inspire people to watch if you provide a summary of what it’s about, or a link. 🙂

I’ve seen some snippets of it (It’s a TV series about Jesus’ life) and it looked interesting.

However, I think I saw a past thread complaining that it got some theology incorrect?

This is one of the snippets I saw. Matthew looks a little young to me for such an important job, but I always liked the story of Matthew being called.

I might mess up a link. Google the Chosen and look for a You Tube response. There are 8 in the series and a host of promotions as they are filming the next series.

Matthew has Asperger syndrome. Very smart and good with math. He is an outcast with a Roman guard and a dog for his friends.

My favorite scene is when Jesus called him. Peter objected and said he is different. Jesus said “ get used to different!”

It is not a Catholic production but there is a Catholic priest on the advisory board as well as a Jewish scholar. The actor playing Jesus is indeed Catholic.

Another favorite scene is when Jesus talks to the children!

I watched the first season on my computer and was fascinated with it. I also listened to a discussion on my computer between Dallas Jenkins who is not a Catholic, and the actor (his name eludes me at the moment) who plays the part of Our Lord is Catholic. It was very interesting… Dallas Jenkins is responsible for this unique series.

Our Blessed Mother did not appear as I am accustomed to see her portrayed, but that did not stop me from admiring the great work that Dallas Jenkins is doing. He has a great attitude and great talent.

I just checked it out. Looks good at first glance, but after looking at a season preview it does seem like liberties are taken. Suffice it to say that I would give it a thorough screening before sharing it with others.

@Tis_Bearself certainly liberties are taken. This is a guess at how things happened and what life was like. The question is whether they are reasonable guesses. I think so for the most part. But if you think it happened differently then tell us what you think.

I love it. Can’t wait for the second season. (And yes the actor who plays Jesus is a very devout Catholic! Although much of the rest of the cast are not religious at all). I really love the series. It makes me see the stories from the Bible in a new light, in a new way, or sometimes just with a better understanding, or even bringing personalities to the same bible stories I’ve read, heard or watched my whole life. I’m a fan of the series even if it isn’t completely Catholic based.
🙂

They are not reasonable if dialogue does not line up with what is already written in the Gospels. Where scripture falls silent, I can bite. Else, I’ll pass.

Then again, perhaps this film is drawing from some modern translations 🤷‍♂️ Either way, I obviously dont know much about it other than the production seems solid. Hence, I would exercise caution.

What I find interesting is that the story of Jesus has inspired so many films and TV miniseries already, and continues to do so.
One would think the world would have grown tired of the story, especially in the modern secular age. Yet it seems to be a perennial favorite.
Gives me hope for the world.

I don’t believe you will find contradictions with scripture. It is mostly about things that we don’t know exactly what happened. Peter and his wife for example. Jesus wearing a back pack as they traveled!

It does follow the gospel and the script uses the words straight from the bible… but they add personalities and other conversation as well to support the bible story they are ‘telling’ in the episode.

I have just watched this based on this thread. I really enjoyed Series 1. I dont see it as theologically incorrect, the writers do have a story line around it that is guess work. It does follow Scripture and begins with Mary Magdeline being healed and goes through to entering Samaria. I am looking forward to Series 2. The characters are very well developed and warmly human. Jesus has a sense of humour which I like.

I very much enjoyed the first season. I didn’t see anything theoligically innacurate and the addition of back stories that make sense has fleshed out behind the scenes. Yes, it may not be true back stories but it did bring to life the fact that these were real people which may get lost in the reading of scripture.

I highly recommend it.

The first production was a Christmas pageant and in that they did not IMO recognize the Virgin Birth et al.

I just watched that one, it was quite good. I will rewatch it as I dont remember any denial of the virgin birth

They did not make it graphic at all, and the Bible passage even says

6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

Mary obviously had to allow Jesus to be born and Joseph found somewhere dry and safe for her to do just that, give birth to Jesus.
There is nothing in Scripture about how Jesus was born. That does not take away the theology that Mary was a virgin.
