In today’s homily, Father reminded us of the importance of praying for our relatives, especially those who have hurt us. Of course, we shouldn’t pray “Lord, please let the earth open and swallow her up”, or “Lord, show her how wrong she is”. Ask God to bless her, and mean it. Pray for her health and happiness. If you don’t have the strength to ask for this, ask God to give you that strength. Pray the Litany of Humility every day, and try to let go of the fear of being wronged.

May the Lord bless you and keep you.

I understand people will see things different ways, but acting like I said things I did not and advocating for me to allow an abusive person into my child’s life are not helpful. Forgiving someone does not mean opening up yourself and those in your care for abuse. If I’d posted about someone who had repeatedly beat me or otherwise tormented me physically, I doubt people would be advocating I invite them back into my life.

Thank you to those who have addressed the actual issue of my SIL** receiving copies** of pictures. I realize now that my initial instincts were right and that it will probably not be possible. We’ll just have to take whatever limited precautions we can.

I am sorry for the anxiety this causes you, with all kindness I am honestly confused why this bothers you so much. I am not trying to be argumentative, I am simply confused. Do you think she is going to deface or burn the photos? Are you concerned she is going to visit a voodoo place and have a curse placed on your children using the photos? (that question is not a joke) These are honest questions as I am trying to wrack my brain thinking of what she could possibly do with a photo (other than look at it) that has you so upset. Your husband doesn’t seem to be as concerned but this issue really is heavy on your heart. I wish I could be more helpful but am struggling to understand the reason behind being able to look at photos but being forbidden from receiving a copy. Please be assured of my prayers this must be stressful and take care as best as you can.
She’s a practicing pagan, so for all I know she COULD use the photo for a curse or something. I’m not specifically worried about her doing anything beyond texting it to her friends saying “look at this ugly baby my brother’s wife spawned.” With more profane language, probably. I just think that my family has a right to privacy and controlling who has pictures of our children, however much that possibility has been eroded by the internet and cell phone cameras. I see now that this is not really possible.

But it’s one thing for people to tell me that and to advise trying to move past my concerns since nothing can be done, and another for people (not you) to tell me I need to invite her back into my life. Am I supposed to invite the man who’s been stalking me back into my life, as well? I just feel like sometimes when I ask for advice on this forum, people blow my words out of proportion or try to chastise me about something tangentially related to the post. It’s frustrating. I’ve prayed for my SIL and done my best to forgive her in my heart. But she will not be allowed back into our lives until she apologizes for all she’s done and shows that she is making an effort to change. Not that she wants to be back in our lives, anyway.

God bless, this is what you wrote that made me believe she was not allowed to see any pictures (in your post #9). Maybe it was written meaning you don’t want her to have a copy, but I think that may be why I was confused and perhaps others. Please be assured of my prayers this is stressful no doubt.
Oh, okay, I see how that could have confused people. This is a stressful topic and I guess I wrote that without realizing what it implied. Thank you for your prayers.

That’s what I read too. 🤷 It indicated to me that the OP objected to her SIL actually seeing the photos.

The problem is, as long as you haven’t forgiven her, she IS in your life. She may not be physically present, but you are letting her control your happiness and your relationships with your husband’s family. She IS taking up your time why you are letting her cause you worry and change the way you live your life in order to accommodate her. (or intentionally unaccomadate her)

If possible, it might be better for you to just ignore and avoid her. I don’t know what you are willing to do in order to cut her out of your life, but you have to decide whether the consequences of those actions are worth their limited benefit. For example, are you planning on shunning all family holidays and events? Weddings? Funerals? Are you ready to accept the fallout if your husband doesn’t want to miss his niece’s birthday or his mother’s funeral?

Sometimes, people are unfortunate enough to have someone in their life who is so toxic that they have to cut off contact with them. This isn’t easy because it effects one’s relationships with the rest of the family. IF there are other options that are a possibility such as setting boundaries, limited contact, refusing to engage, and ignoring ridiculous behavior, it’s generally better to try those first. That doesn’t mean to have to invite the person to your barbeque, friend them on facebook, or send them a Christmas card, but just learn to be civil and not let their presence ruin the blissfully rare occasions where you are obliged to share the same family event. However, only you and your husband know if that is a possibility in this situation. Sometimes it just isn’t.

I don’t see how you can possibly control this. I don’t see a problem with SIL seeing the pictures. Of course we don’t want any negative comments from her. You may just need to tell her that–please don’t make any hurtful comments on social media. That would be setting up a boundary. There may be other boundaries you will need to set up as you go along. Just be upfront. After that, there isn’t much else you can do. You can ask her to pray for the health of the baby.

This has to be so hard for you given the history you have with SIL.

I’ve read the posts and I think most of the posters are being impartial and just can’t see how it’'s possible for you to actually limit photos of your child and prevent them from making their way into SIL hands.

With the fact that your in-laws really see nothing negative about your SIL…I think it will be hard to make this happen.

You can request that your in-laws post nothing of your daughter on social media. That might take the lion’s share of copies that could make it to her desktop.

Unfortunately…all it takes is for your in-laws to snap a picture of your daughter with their phone and text it to SIL…who will probably be complaining to them that she hasn’t seen her niece.
Once again…you can make your intentions and concerns perfectly clear…but they might see you as being irrational.

This might be something you’ll have to let go of. I think you’re operating out of fear and a need to protect your child from serious harm you’ve experienced and I don’t blame you for that.

In all seriousness…forgiveness does help a lot. Allegra hit the nail on the head when she basically said that forgiveness prevents someone from taking up too much space in your head.

I’m not suggesting you invite her back into your life. On the contrary…you have a child to think about and I think you’re right to cut SIL out of your life.
It’s healthy for you and your husband to do this.

But…forgiving her and actually moving on might help with this anxiety you have about pictures of your daughter making into SIL’s hands.
It doesn’t sound like this is realistic…especially given the attitude your in-laws have about her.

Having your husband make your intentions plain to his parents might be effective…but, unless your in-laws actually see the harm that SIL has caused you and your family…I doubt he’ll get through to them.

SIL could get ahold of some pictures and she could say some very mean and nasty things about them…but she isn’t directly harming your child…in anyway…if she isn’t in her life. I think that is something you need to realize.

My husband and I have either cut out or severely limited contact with several family members we have. I’ve worked hard to forgive these family members. It’s taken time, work and a few trips to the confessional booth but I feel better about it and no longer let it get to me.

You really cant stop your SIL getting a photo of the new baby…if you don’t give her a copy she will likely get a copy from another family member or friend…

What you can do though is make a request for everybody not to place your babies photo on social media or blogs…

Dont worry about it though…by focusing so much on SIL you are giving her power over your life and happiness…instead focus on your beautiful baby that you will soon have 🙂
My SIL is a textbook narcissist and has been cut off from us for over a year now, though we limited contact with her before then. She’s not only personally victimized me in the past, but has treated DH horribly and been extremely rude to her parents in front of me. Her parents either don’t see anything wrong with her behavior or choose to ignore it. MIL is constantly telling us how great SIL is and bragging about her, and she and FIL do not agree with her being cut off.

We’re expecting a baby in a few months, and I feel extremely uncomfortable with the idea of SIL even getting pictures of her after all the hateful things she’s done. I’m not sure that DH has the same bad gut feeling I do, but he’s agreed that it would be best if she did not receive any pictures of our baby. FIL has obliviously suggested that we have SIL come down to help out when the baby comes  so I know they still don’t really get it and laying down an ultimatum that they not forward any pictures to her will not go over well. I also can’t think of any way to stop them, since pictures sent over facebook, email, and texting can be forwarded, physical pictures can be given away or copied, and they could just give her the password to any photo website we set up. On the other hand, I don’t think it’s reasonable to not send any pictures at all.

Is there any way we can word our request not to share pictures with SIL that will convey the seriousness of our wishes without offending his parents? Or any feasible way to give them pictures that cannot be shared?

Crystal waters is right.

I would focus on the joy and happiness that your new little one trying to control who sees a picture of your baby is probably impossible…

If inlaws tell SIL you don’t want her to have a picture-you just gave her another challenge to get you mad.

I would drop it-and focus on happiness and the new baby.

If you have cut off ties with SIL and things are as you posted-she doesn’t want a picture anyway, or may say this to hurt you further.

Both crystal and mommy k gave outstanding advice.

Let this go, enjoy your baby and stay no contact.

Making demands will only disturb your peace. Kind of like throwing rocks in your own peaceful pond.

I would let it go and avoid posting pics online or texting pics if you want to be really serious about it.

But you can’t prevent other people from snapping pictures of your baby and texting them.

My mother probably has taken more pictures of my kids and my nephews then my sister and i have.

If you want to hear an apology from your SIL and have her promise to do better, you will need to tell her what you want her to apologize for. She may not know how she has offended you. If you tell her and she apologizes, accept her apology and have a clear mind. Having a baby is a gift from God. The baby needs to be born into a favorable environment. I hope you can work it out with the SIL. If not, you will need to make it a non-issue. Make your priority your newborn and don’t give in to foolishness.

You may just need to tell her that–please don’t make any hurtful comments on social media. That would be setting up a boundary. .
I can’t help but think if you tell SIL ‘Please don’t make any negative comments on social media of my child’, you have just told her how to hurt you and given her more ammunition.

I think it is impossible to monitor every web site out there and unfortunately, parents need to live in a world where pictures of their kids are posted on sites they have never seen. A sad reality of todays world.

However, there is an old saying ‘what people think of me is none of my business’. Thirty years ago, parents did not need to worry about what others said on face book about their child. But rest assured a lot of people still said negative comments about their children behind their back. If SIL is as bad as the OP says she is, SIL is probably already saying bad things about the child and the OP can not control that.

It sort of surprises me how many people here think that the OPs SIL can be reasoned with.

I can see the anxiety in her posts. For me, it’s very obvious that the OP cannot talk to this woman and needs to keep her off limits to her family, for her own safety and security.

We tell children to try to avoid bullies at school and not to associate with them because that could lead to more bullying.
We certainly don’t expect children to reason with their bullies or expect them to become friends.

That would create anxiety and would be so unhealthy to put that kind of expectation on a child who has been abused and bullied.

Expecting the same from the OP is too much. Just talking to this SIL would be too much because of the fear that it can generate when the OP is expecting to be abused again.

It’s best for her to keep her distance, stay away and ignore her SIL.

I think it’s also best to drop the subject and keep a firm set of boundaries she can control herself.
No pics on social media, no texting pics and requesting that loved ones avoid posting pics on social media.
I think that is reasonable and achievable and it may give her some peace of mind.

Yup. If this lady really is out to get you, you might as well say, “I triple dog dare you!”

👍 At this point the only thing the OP can do is stay physically away from SIL.

I agree with you here but it appears the OP still wants to participate in her SIL’s craziness. Granted I don’t know the whole history but in my opinion it would be best for the OP to stop worrying about SIL and enjoy her new baby. In all reality there is nothing the OP can do to control the situation so it’s best to let it go. If the SIL knows the OP is still trying to control the situation it just gives the SIL more power.

If the SIL posts rude things about a baby on the internet, well that says a whole more about the SIL than it does the baby.

We will definitely be doing that. Thank you for the advice.

I don’t know, maybe this only makes sense to me, but I feel like there’s a difference between her just seeing the pictures in a frame or on the refrigerator and her actually possessing a copy of them, either electronic or physical.
It’s not just you.

My mother has a lot of issues, too. She’s a really nasty human being. I’m not a psychologist, but people to whom I’ve talked and who have been able to evaluate her neutrally tend to use the word “sociopath”–and that on top of substance abuse issues.

When I got married, one of the more dysfunctional people from my past got some of my wedding photos (they were old family friends, and I thought it would be nice to send them some), used them in a totally inappropriate way without my permission (think as advertisements for a group that I can’t morally support), and then, when I objected, threatened to tell my mother my current address and send her all of the wedding photos if I followed through on hiring legal help to deal with our pictures being used like that. I was in the unpleasant situation of not being able to explain to this person, even if she’d listen, the details of the issues between my mother and I because it wouldn’t be morally right of me to tell the world all the bad things my mother has done over the years, even if that former friend would have listened.

The way my mother would use our wedding photos would be to post them all over her house and office and brag about what a good marriage I made in order to imply what a wonderful mom she is. Never mind the beatings, the emotional abuse, the alcoholism, the fact that we cut all contact years ago…you get the drift. Basically, she’d use something terribly wonderful and precious to us for her own ends yet again, and it’s not something I can bear thinking about.

Similarly, she doesn’t know about DD. That’s led to my having to make a pretty hard decision: neither does my only living grandparent. He’s elderly and not in good health; it wouldn’t be fair of me to burden him with all that background information (it would break his heart), or to tell him about his great-granddaughter but tell him not to tell his daughter.

If she knew about DD, I can already predict what would happen. While she doesn’t have visitation rights in our state, she would if we were investigated by CPS. She’d probably file anonymous complaints with CPS. She would almost certainly sue us in court and make our lives a living hell that way–her default method of attacking people is suing them. She would steal DD’s identity, like she stole her daughters’, and use it for tax fraud purposes. And yet she’d manage to make most people see her as the poor, victimized grandmother if we had her arrested for that! As it is, she made sure that one of her kids couldn’t get a job because of a messed-up tax history and how that affects security clearances. I only recently got the last of the tax mess off my credit history, and I’m almost 30. (Read: a few years ago, I was financially solvent enough to be able to tell her that I was no longer a teenager with no recourse who lived across the country; I had a decent-paying job, and if I ever, EVER saw something suspicious on my credit report again or either of my younger siblings reported something similar on theirs, I’d contact the appropriate law enforcement agencies about identity theft and let them know that she’d done that to us in the past, too.)

People who’ve never lived with this don’t understand. Me? If you think they can’t accept the boundary of “SIL doesn’t see the photos,” then they don’t get any, and they don’t get any alone time with your kid, either. I never post pictures of DD on social media, and the only people who get them via email are people I trust entirely who have no contact with my parents. That having been said, someone could still take a picture and share it. Were I you, I’d make it clear that doing so will mean contact being cut.

One last thing: you may have already thought of this, and if so, forgive me for bringing it up. Please, PLEASE talk to a few trusted people and make plans for if anything, God forbid, happens to you and your husband. Figure out who you’d want to raise your DD, and put it in writing legally. Talk to a few others, and ask them to promise to do anything necessary to ensure that your SIL will never raise your daughter. In all likelihood, you’ll never need to utilize that, but you don’t want something to happen and then a judge handing custody over to that sweet Aunt Marcy who seems to adore her little niece.

A good comparison for how I’d feel about my mother having pictures of our wedding or of our kid would be like how a lot of you would feel if you found out that someone somehow took pictures of you having sex with your spouse and splashed them all over some XXX website. Even though you did absolutely nothing wrong in having sex with your spouse when some pervert took the pictures without your knowledge, you’d feel very creeped-out by the fact that someone like that had those pictures. Sociopaths and narcissists (at least, those who refuse to recognize or treat those psychological traits) are emotional perverts: they use people and emotions and relationships strictly for their own personal ends, and use them the way a sex addict uses porn–to get a “fix,” or whatever they want at that particular moment. Ew.

…Did you completely ignore my reply to a previous poster where I described some of the things she’s done? Are you seriously suggesting I should invite an abuser back into my life and let her interact with my child? What is wrong with you?
I am so sorry about the family drama. Unfortunately, many people have no clue what it is like to deal with a narcissist and some genuinely believe those monsters deserve a chance over and over again.

I had the same thing happen to me. The photos of my children were passed to my narcissistic control freak father whom I don’t see anymore. I was not asked for permission or how I felt about it. I was furious but decided to not make a fuss because there was nothing I could do and it would have probably damaged my relationship with these people. I understand why you don’t want her to have a picture of your baby, I really do.

I wish I had good advice on how to handle this, but the only thing I can think of is to not demand of in-laws to not forward photos. As sad and unfair as that is, they will mark you as the crazy one. They are already in denial about her, and things are likely to stay that way. Families, eh?

God bless.
