I think that you may have to stick to sharing printed photos only, if that’s what you and your husband have decided on. Those are harder to share with someone else, since it would take physically scanning and making a copy.
I do understand where you’re coming from. I was scrolling through Facebook one day and all of the sudden I see a picture of my son come up- a family member of my husband’s who I am not even friends with on the site put it up as her profile picture. (I had texted this particular person a picture, which is how she got it.) All these random people I don’t know are commenting on the picture about how cute he is. I was livid- I don’t understand why people think it’s their right to share a photo of someone else’s child without the parent’s permission or knowledge.
Unfortunately, my husband and I do not see eye to eye on this- he does not think it’s a big deal, and yet the situation infuriates me. We have not been able to come to a compromise about it, so I have personally stopped electronically sharing any pictures with anyone I do not trust. My husband isn’t really the picture taking type, so the only pictures anyone gets are generally from me anyway. You are fortunate that your husband has agreed to set some boundaries. My advice would be don’t borrow trouble, and just deal with situations as they arise, and control what you share to begin with. If your sister in law is that volatile and you don’t want her having pictures, only share printed pictures with your husband’s parents. However, I don’t think it’s out of line if you want to text a picture and say “please don’t pass this along to anyone else- we are trying to control our baby’s online presence” or something. Just be aware that grandparents get very excited, and may not listen to you, and be prepared for how you’re going to handle it if they don’t. You’ll have to decide whether it’s a hill you want to die on or not, depending on the actual situation.
