William Miller was never a Seventh-day Adventist.

Do YOU love Jesus enough to follow Him wherever He leads YOU?
SORRY! It was Ellen Gould White! Christ called me to the Tabernacle, where He resides in the Catholic Church. I spent two hours in His Holy presence Friday. I have seen miracles happen in His presence. I can only pray that one day you will come to believe.

The Catholic Church is not a stepping stone, it is the destination of Christians on earth. We believe in Christ. We love Christ. We adore Christ. We are home.

Christ’s peace be always with you.

“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:… Then He will also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:… And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Matthew 25:31-34, 41, 46. Jesus is showing the separation that will occur at the Second Coming, and in so doing He answers very plainly that hell is not going on right now. It is not until He comes in His glory and sits on the throne of His glory that the righteous are rewarded and the wicked are punished. This obviously cannot be now, for He is on the throne of grace now. Q: What, exactly, is spiritualism, and why is it not reconcilable with the faith?
Father Bamonte: It is the evocation of the dead, that is, a practice with which, through techniques and human means, with or without a medium, an attempt is made to call a dead person to ask him questions.
Every time we pray to God for our dead, without engaging in a spiritualistic practice, we ask the dead as well as the saints to pray to God with and for us. This is the invocation of the dead, but not their evocation, which is what spiritualism does.
The dead can only manifest themselves to us by the free initiative of God, directly and never through techniques or mediums such as spiritualistic séances. For serious reasons, God can allow a dead person to appear to us, for example, to give us advice or at least a consoling presence, to ask for prayers or to express gratitude for prayers offered.
If on the contrary we are the ones who want to bring about a meeting with the dead through “evocation” with spiritualistic techniques, already in the Old Testament God spoke clearly in this respect and told us that he abominates anyone who does these things. Suffice it to read Deuteronomy 18:10-12 or Leviticus 19:31.
WHAT THEN DO THE CATHOLIC BELIEVE? THAT THE DEAD’S SPIRITS ARE UP AND AROUND? THAT THEY ARE IN HELL OR HEAVEN NOW? DOESN’T THE BIBLE CLEARLY STATE THAT WHEN JESUS COMES IN HIS SECOND COMING HE WILL WAKE THE DEAD AND SEPERATE THE GOOD AND THE EVILDOERS? WHAT THEN ABOUT ALL THE SPIRITUALISM IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH? WITHOUT GETTING INTO OTHER TOPICS…ANSWER ONLY THIS…THANKS!

I can only refer you to the teaching of the Catholic Church. Since you challenge the teaching of the Church of Christ, you will be presented with exactly what She teaches. The following is from catechism found on the Vatican website, with the chapters listed in case you prefer to investigate for yourself:

632 The frequent New Testament affirmations that Jesus was “raised from the dead” presuppose that the crucified one sojourned in the realm of the dead prior to his resurrection.477 This was the first meaning given in the apostolic preaching to Christ’s descent into hell: that Jesus, like all men, experienced death and in his soul joined the others in the realm of the dead. But he descended there as Saviour, proclaiming the Good News to the spirits imprisoned there.478

633 Scripture calls the abode of the dead, to which the dead Christ went down, “hell” - Sheol in Hebrew or Hades in Greek - because those who are there are deprived of the vision of God.479 Such is the case for all the dead, whether evil or righteous, while they await the Redeemer: which does not mean that their lot is identical, as Jesus shows through the parable of the poor man Lazarus who was received into “Abraham’s bosom”:480 "It is precisely these holy souls, who awaited their Saviour in Abraham’s bosom, whom Christ the Lord delivered when he descended into hell."481 Jesus did not descend into hell to deliver the damned, nor to destroy the hell of damnation, but to free the just who had gone before him.482

634 "The gospel was preached even to the dead."483 The descent into hell brings the Gospel message of salvation to complete fulfilment. This is the last phase of Jesus’ messianic mission, a phase which is condensed in time but vast in its real significance: the spread of Christ’s redemptive work to all men of all times and all places, for all who are saved have been made sharers in the redemption.

635 Christ went down into the depths of death so that "the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live."484 Jesus, “the Author of life”, by dying destroyed "him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and [delivered] all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage."485 Henceforth the risen Christ holds “the keys of Death and Hades”, so that "at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth."486

Today a great silence reigns on earth, a great silence and a great stillness. A great silence because the King is asleep. the earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh and he has raised up all who have slept ever since the world began. . . He has gone to search for Adam, our first father, as for a lost sheep. Greatly desiring to visit those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, he has gone to free from sorrow Adam in his bonds and Eve, captive with him - He who is both their God and the son of Eve. . . "I am your God, who for your sake have become your son. . . I order you, O sleeper, to awake. I did not create you to be a prisoner in hell. Rise from the dead, for I am the life of the dead."487

Further:
1021 Death puts an end to human life as the time open to either accepting or rejecting the divine grace manifested in Christ.590 The New Testament speaks of judgment primarily in its aspect of the final encounter with Christ in his second coming, but also repeatedly affirms that each will be rewarded immediately after death in accordance with his works and faith. the parable of the poor man Lazarus and the words of Christ on the cross to the good thief, as well as other New Testament texts speak of a final destiny of the soul -a destiny which can be different for some and for others.(591 Scripture Reference)

1022 Each man receives his eternal retribution in his immortal soul at the very moment of his death, in a particular judgment that refers his life to Christ: either entrance into the blessedness of heaven-through a purification592 or immediately,593-or immediate and everlasting damnation.(594 S.R.)

At the evening of life, we shall be judged on our love.(595 S.R.)

There is more to come, since 1,977 years of teaching and tradition cannot be distilled into a few sound bites.

Christ’s peace be always with you.

WHAT THEN DO THE CATHOLIC BELIEVE?
Here is further Church teaching:
1030 All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.

1031 The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned.604 The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. the tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire:605

As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.606

1032 This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: "Therefore Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin."607 From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God.608 The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead:

Let us help and commemorate them. If Job’s sons were purified by their father’s sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.609

IV. Hell
1033 We cannot be united with God unless we freely choose to love him. But we cannot love God if we sin gravely against him, against our neighbor or against ourselves: "He who does not love remains in death. Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him."610 Our Lord warns us that we shall be separated from him if we fail to meet the serious needs of the poor and the little ones who are his brethren.611 To die in mortal sin without repenting and accepting God’s merciful love means remaining separated from him for ever by our own free choice. This state of definitive self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed is called “hell.”

1034 Jesus often speaks of “Gehenna” of “the unquenchable fire” reserved for those who to the end of their lives refuse to believe and be converted, where both soul and body can be lost.612 Jesus solemnly proclaims that he "will send his angels, and they will gather . . . all evil doers, and throw them into the furnace of fire,"613 and that he will pronounce the condemnation: "Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire!"614

1035 The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, "eternal fire."615 The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs.

1036 The affirmations of Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Church on the subject of hell are a call to the responsibility incumbent upon man to make use of his freedom in view of his eternal destiny. They are at the same time an urgent call to conversion: "Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few."616

Since we know neither the day nor the hour, we should follow the advice of the Lord and watch constantly so that, when the single course of our earthly life is completed, we may merit to enter with him into the marriage feast and be numbered among the blessed, and not, like the wicked and slothful servants, be ordered to depart into the eternal fire, into the outer darkness where "men will weep and gnash their teeth."617

1037 God predestines no one to go to hell;618 for this, a willful turning away from God (a mortal sin) is necessary, and persistence in it until the end. In the Eucharistic liturgy and in the daily prayers of her faithful, the Church implores the mercy of God, who does not want “any to perish, but all to come to repentance”:619

Father, accept this offering from your whole family. Grant us your peace in this life, save us from final damnation, and count us among those you have chosen.620

Christ’s peace be always with you.

WHAT THEN DO THE CATHOLIC BELIEVE?
Please refer to the catechism posts 179 and 180. THAT is what we believe.
THAT THE DEAD’S SPIRITS ARE UP AND AROUND?
No. You have been greatly mislead.
THAT THEY ARE IN HELL OR HEAVEN NOW?
No impurity will enter Heaven. Everyone dies with some level of sin. Can you be purified by sleeping, or by the “refiner’s fire”? Only one is true.
DOESN’T THE BIBLE CLEARLY STATE THAT WHEN JESUS COMES IN HIS SECOND COMING HE WILL WAKE THE DEAD AND SEPERATE THE GOOD AND THE EVILDOERS?
Final judgment. Your church has thrown away any concept of a particular judgment.
WHAT THEN ABOUT ALL THE SPIRITUALISM IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH?
You don’t see the difference between your two quotes? Christ Himself said: Luke 20:36-38 (New International Version) Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984 by International Bible Society

“and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection. But in the account of the bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord 'the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.'He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” This was while the gates of Heaven were closed. How did Moses, Enoch, and Elijah rise to Heaven with the gates closed? How did Moses and Elijah appear in the transfiguration as alive, unless an all-powerful God had carried them directly to heaven, without “sleeping”?

This concept of spirit sleep is a recent (historiaclly speaking) innovation and not based on anything seen in the first fifteen centuries of Christ’s Church. Doesn’t the parable of Lazarus and the rich man provide instruction for you?

(Luke 16:19-26) "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ "But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

Adventists have a great deal of confusion in dealing with this bible passage. Like the parable about the Rich Man and Lazarus, it is essential for Adventists to somehow make the plain words of scripture, which are describing an afterlife in which there is consciousness, to somehow mean the opposite of what they are saying!

Amen! Where is the sriptural support for the death of the soul? For the sleep of the soul? Since everyone dies with some level of sin, how on earth do you enter heaven, since no unrighteousness may enter? Must you not be purified by a refiner’s fire before you can enter heaven? And, if hell is not eternal, how then can heaven be? Christ was crystal clear on this.

The SDA, while much closer to mainstream Christianity than either the LDS or JWs, teaches this new concept of soul annihilation (popped up in the 1800s in America). From the remnants of the failed Millerite movement, Ellen Gould White formed the SDA, used the Lutheran bible, but she then rejected much of what Luther taught. Where was her authority to bind and loose? And who gave it to her?

I must view with particular suspicion, any belief system whose origin was America in the 1800s. None of this is in prophecy, except that which relates to false teachers and prophets.

Before slighting Adventists as religious misfits who have never opened a Bible in an attempt to disavow doctrines which you hold with hatred; try seeing what the Bible actually does say about hell-fire, and what happens when we die.

  1. I never said you don’t pick up a bible. You did. Clearly, you read your bible much.
  2. I point error out. Deviation from the Church that Christ founded is defined as error. I hate only the evil one. I do not “hate” the SDA church or it’s members.I pray for and with them.
  3. All of this is the SDA version of Protestantism. You err when you assume that I have not read these same passages. It’s just that we have our interpretation that we are comfortable with, and have been for a long, long time.

BTW; most Catholics, I would say, are not “anti-Adventist;” just like most Adventists, are in fact, not anti-Catholic. I guess it’s nice for “Catholic apologetics” if you can make such a charge stick; but it has no basis in real life. 👍
Hi Protestant101,

I just want to let you know that amills’ description of what the Adventist pastor told him is very close to what one of my co-workers told me! amills quoted:

He then told me about how Catholics were cannibals because of their belief in the Holy Eucharist, he explained to me quite clearly out of an unofficial Catholic Catechism (and out of context) how Catholics had eliminated the 2nd commandment and worship idols. He told me about how the Pope had changed the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday. (didn’t know the name of the Pope).

My very first experience with someone of the SDA faith is/was extreme anti-catholicism. He’s a co-worker of mine and very emphatically told me that the Catholic church removed the 2nd commandment and, then, how Catholics worship statues! When I explained that his 2nd commandment is included in our 1st commandment, he had to quote Exodus to prove me wrong. So, then I had to explain that the numbering of the commandments that both Catholics and Lutherans happen to use comes from Deuteronomy, not Exodus. Then when I explained how we do not worship statues but HONOR the saints that they represent and ask them to pray for us, (of course, I had to also explain to him that Catholics and even most protestants believe that the soul goes either to heaven or hell at the time of physical death), he insisted that it looks to HIM like Catholics are worshipping the statues, so… 😦

Like, what I’d like to know is where did he get fed these lies, and why doesn’t he believe the truth of what the Catholic church really teaches, when explained to him? That’s what I call anti-Catholicism! And I want to reiterate that I knew nothing of SDA before I met him, which goes to show that the Catholic faith doesn’t waste time slamming our protestant brothers and sisters in their chosen faith denomination.

So far, I don’t see anything in your post that has to do with “Adventist Teachings On Hell.” But, what you have described is not “slamming Catholics” it is theological differences. Not necessarily “lies” either.

You gave me this 3 point fancy explanation for nothing. I did not say you hated SDAs; I said you hate certain of our doctrines, and that this has a cause and effect:

Telling someone that the Catholic church removed the 2nd commandment and that Catholics worship statues, are completely untrue statements and have nothing to do with theological differences! He had to hear those “lies” from somewhere - would he have heard this at church? I have a hard time understanding why any Christian would want to perpetuate falsehoods of what a certain religion teaches. Didn’t Christ come to testify to Truth?

I realize that my comment is off-topic, but you did mention in a prior quote that “most Adventists, are in fact, not anti-Catholic” and I wanted you know that the only Adventist I’ve ever met IS anti-Catholic! But I sure do hope you’re right about the majority…😉

Revelation 20 9 And there came down fire from God out of heaven, and devoured them; and the devil, who seduced them, was cast into the pool of fire and brimstone, where both the beast 10And the false prophet shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life, was cast into the pool of fire.

I didn’t “assisinate” anyone’s character in my post, so I have no idea what you’re talking about! As far as eternal hell-fire, I do not wish to spend eternity in hell, so I will pray that God will grant me mercy and allow me to spend eternity with Him in Heaven. 😉

I think a good question is why did the “originators” of Adventism decided to come up with a different doctrine on the “eternity” of hell than what the Christians believed up to that point?

the Seventh Day Adventists really enjoy interpreting the Bible their own way.

And Many Other Topics About The State Of The Dead Here

Well, it appears by the SDA reading of this one reference, we are all dead.
I think your response to Protestant 101`s Scripture citation makes a good point. When reading the Bible and studying its meaning, it is important to look at Scripture as a whole. As we know, the Bible never contradicts itself. But when we examine one verse without taking the rest of the Bible into account, it can lead us to a false conclusion! The verse Protestant 101 cited, could lead one to believe that the soul is not enternal , which is false. Our soul is eternal and Jesus taught us that those who believe in Him and follow his teachings shall have eternal life.

Sincerely,

Maria1212

Scripture has been referred to as a jigsaw puzzle. I can hold up individual pieces one after another and claim that all are part of the picture. And, I would be correct. However, you would not be able to visualize the whole of the picture just by seeing bits and pieces. My Chaplain at work is SDA and thought that I sounded like SDA when I said that scripture was a seamless garment, to be taken in whole. I reminded him that it was actually him who sounded Catholic, as that teaching goes all the way back in the universal church.

It occurs to me that, until the canonization of the New Testament, scripture had always been viewed in its entirety. There was no old or new, since there was just scripture. All of this OT vs. NT is a modern contrivance, and has lead many into error. Scripture is the story of God’s covenants with man, from creation until now. His love is continuous, and so is the story recorded about it.
