Ok, so i posted this earlier but nobody seemed to reply to me… maybe this time i will get some answers???

ok so ive done a bit of research and ive concluded that the 5 main differences between Adentists and Catholics are (correct me if im wrong please? & im sorry if i in some way or another insult you guys… im sorry . that is not my intention. let me know… =] ):
  1. that faith and only faith is enough to save you… ( it is not needed for you to do good acts and such)
  2. that it is saturday the day to rest. (and not sunday)
  3. you only believe in the immersion baptism.
4.you celebrate the Eucharist as a ceremony of rememberance of Jesus. ( you celebrate it every 3 months and share a piece of bread and grape juice. beforehand, you wash each others feet)
  1. you believe the second coming of Christ is near?
these are the ones ive crossed the most… altough i do know you guys have many great qualities which include:
  1. abstain from alcohol
  2. insist in “giving back” to our Lord by “taking out your wallet” . i believe you have many many hospitals as well… (these are all great examples to all of us out there)
3.many publication houses. and you print your readings in many diferent languages.
then again… other things you dont agree with the Catholic religion is:
  1. the 7 sacraments
    2.the bible has 73 books
    3.against all images
  2. against our “praising” of the virgin mary and the saints. (which we DONT. we do not praise. this is a misunderstanding… )
  3. the presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist
  4. the forgiveness of sins through confession with a priest
7.that the Holy Bible must be interpreted through doctrine and explanation by Pontifs and saints of the church. (they are guided by the holy spirit to avoid mistakes and errors on our part.
  5. faith is not enough: it is necessary to do good deeds. and live the christian life
  6. the authority of the Pope the Bishop and Deacon
  7. the holy mass?
just want to see if anyone out there has anything to say about this… any comments? corrections? i sure would love to hear from you guys and what your reasons are and your beliefs? id like to discuss::… Adventists, Catholics… anyone. =]

Hi Brooke:

You’ll find the SDA fundemental beliefs on adventist.org which is the way I prefer to find what folks actually believe, rather than here on CAF. Hope this helps.

Sorry, I will not link my site again. I agree with you guys on the exposing of these doctrines though.

I can still access your link. I think that’s against forum rules by the way (especially since it states things rather controversial).

Hi Brooke,
happilycatholic is right-on about giving you the official church stance. However, you don’t get a feel for the wide variety of opinions that exist in the SDA community.

I’m not an Adventist but have been attending an SDA church for over 4 months. My mother was RC and I was raised RC. My father was a Methodist. I would love to chat some but there will be times I won’t be able to defend/represent the SDA church. The SDA church has brought me many blessings.
Btw, I like the song in your signature too.

Greetings Brooke;

There are many fundamental differences between Catholic and S.D.A. One thing to consider outside your list of differences is When and “Who” founded the Catholic Church, and “Who” founded the S.D.A community of believers? You will find both religious and secular records proving the Catholic Church was founded by Jesus himself around 30A.D, and the S.D.A community began from the “adventist” movements in the 1800’s by either a Woman or a Man. Depending on which S.D.A member you speak with.

Getting past this phase of founders and dates, now becomes a subject of personal interpretations of history and the bible from the late S.D.A member. This interpretation matter is “Key”. For one can easily form a community of believers from one’s own interpretation from scripture, but denying the whole content of scripture which must be supported by both the Old Testament with the New Testament supported by Apostolic Sacred Tradition which the Catholic Church has held too these last 2000 years.

Peace be with you

Hi Paul,

I was a SDA for about 30 years who recently joined the Catholic Church. May I ask you what blessings the SDA church has brought you that are different from the blessings, if any, you received during your time as a Catholic? Thanks in advance!

God bless all!!!

Hello Patrick,
This may be a time-of-life answer and not really a RC vs. SDA answer. In addition, I am in a fairly progressive community, so there is not an emphasis on legalistic adherence:
  • A view of the Father as a loving God.
  • An understanding of a larger context of the universe. God versus Satan, not just my earthly redemption.
  • An appreciation of the wisdom of the full Bible - Old and New Testament.
  • A rejection of eternal torment in Hell.
  • An appreciation of Revelations and the second coming.
  • I like Sabbath School - many points of view come out.
  • I like the format of worship - praise songs, sharing, sermon.
  • I enjoy keeping Sabbath - just having a day w/God. For me, it’s not about obligations/guilt/sin.
  • The subculture - I was a vegetarian w/libertarian leanings. It was nice to find other people serious about health and with a respect for freedom. It feels holistic to me.
As a RC, I have fond thoughts of these things:
  • Shaking hands - “peace be with you”
  • Some of the progressive music we played in the 70s (Day by Day)
  • RC has a good relationship w/science. Evolution vs. Creation. Not literal interpretation of the Bible.
  • Occasional, deep solemn contemplation of the crucifixion.
  • Fish Fridays and lent - sharing this experience w/other Catholics.
Both organizations have a great world wide mission. There is an infrastructure for spreading the Good News and doing good works.

Patrick, please share! I would love to hear your thoughts on both sides of the fence - good or bad.

Hi Paul,

Thank you very much for sharing your answers with me! I like that you are perceptive about “time-of-life” considerations in your answers. I’m 50 years old (not sure how old you are), and I’ve had “many” years to think and pray and study about things. I studied to be an Adventist minister, and received a BA in Theology from an Adventist college, but did not accept a call to pastor that was offered to me after I graduated. I did preach as often as I could in the SDA churches I attended or ones nearby as well as teach Sabbath School, give Bible studies, ingather (do they still do that?), and other Adventist activities. Just a little of my background to give you a little perspective about me.

All of the blessings you mention from the Adventist perspective, I too found to be wonderful blessings and I agree with you! I would say that the first five you list, I still hold as blessings in the Catholic Church, with the exception of rejection of eternal punishment in hell. While there are verses in the Bible from which the Adventist interpretation can be supported, there are other verses that contradict the Adventist interpretation and can only be rectified by the Catholic interpretation of hell. One additional thing that I deeply cherished as an Adventist was foot washing before communion!

I agree with your list of blessings in the Catholic Church as well, and one in particular…the deep solemn contemplation of the crucifixion. I began that deep solemn contemplation of the crucifixion however, as an Adventist. In fact it was the contemplation of Jesus’ sacrifice for us on the cross and His great love for us in that act of redemption that eventually led me to the Catholic Church. I came to understand and fully acknowledge my sinfulness and need of a Saviour by studying the cross and Jesus sacrifice. More and more I was drawn to Jesus and His sacrifice for my sins…for my very life. And when I reached the point in my life where I was willing to try and understand what was actually going on during Mass in the Liturgy of The Eucharist, it was at that time when I fully understood Jesus and the cross, His sacrifice, and His plan for salvation from which we enter into eternal life. It was in the Lord’s Supper, Jesus’ real presence in the Lord’s Supper, The Eucharist, The Body of Christ, His Church and His Bride, where all of the Old Testament and New Testament came together. To be united and one with Jesus and His Body The Church with no other alternative but to enter the fullness of life because Jesus is LIFE, became the answer to all of my desires and the comfort to all of pains and the protection from all of my fears.

There is not enough room here for me to elaborate in one post that the greatest blessing I have found in my Christian journey is The Eucharist…the real body and blood of Jesus given for, and to, me…to the world. I’m sure we both have much more to share…but this was a very nice beginning!

Thank you again Paul for the opportunity for you and me to share these blessings! We have so much to be thankful for! God is good and His mercy endures forever!

God bless all!!!

Hey Brooke,

The Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church considers the Catholic Church an Apostacy. Through a fictionalized account of this so-called apostacy, they believe they now can lay claim to being the true Church that Christ established.

All protesters of the Catholic Church have to find some way to discredit the Catholic Church to give their ownselves credibility.

The SDA is correct that the Sabbath is Saturday, but so what. Jesus, Himself, said man was not made for the Sabbath, rather the Sabbath was made for man. The Catholic Church, with it’s authority given to her by Jesus Christ Himself took Sunday as the new day of worship because Sunday is the day our Lord Jesus Christ rose from the dead. And, we are followers of Jesus Christ (the New Covenant), not Moses and mosaic law (the Old Covenant).

The Catholic Church takes care of more sick people with more hospitals than any other single organization in this world; same goes for feeding the hungry. The Catholic Church set the dates and made the calendar that is in use today, called the Gregorian Calendar.

Hope this is of some help

hello jpaul and everyone else who has posted their comments… [thanks!]

yes, i understand everything you’re saying and i totally agree of course. but what i dont come to understand, though, is how can those that follow the SDA church do so? i find it hard to believe how they can believe that their church is the right one. i know everybody thinks that they’re in the real church of Jesus our savior but if you really pay attention to the scripture and you understand it and you dont “skip” or “ignore” anything in it, shouldnt you figure out that it is in fact the catholic church that was founded by our Father in heaven, through his son?

“And I say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock will my church be based, and the doors of hell will not overcome it. I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatever is fixed by you on earth will be fixed in heaven: and whatever you make free on earth will be made free in heaven.”----- Matthew 16:18-19

“And he took him to Jesus. Looking at him fixedly Jesus said, You are Simon, the son of John; your name will be Cephas (which is to say, Peter).” ----- John 1:42

Cephas (Κηφας)
John 1:42–

He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said,
“You are Simon son of John, you shall be called Cephas”, which is translated ‘Peter’.

1 Corinthians 1:12–

But I say that each of you says “I am of Paul”, or “I am of Apollos”, or “I am of Cephas”, or “I am of Christ”.

Galatians 1:18–

Then after three years I did go up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and stayed with him for fifteen days;

In these passages, ‘Cephas’ is given as the nickname of the apostle better known as Simon Peter. The Apostle Peter, also known as Saint Peter, Shimon “Keipha” Ben-Yonah/Bar-Yonah, Simon Peter, Cephas and Keipha—original name Shimon or Simeon (Acts 15:14)—was one of the Twelve Apostles whom Jesus chose as his original disciples. His life is prominently featured in the New Testament Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. The Greek word is transliterated *Κηφᾶς (Kēphâs). *

The apostle’s given name appears to be Simon, and he is given the Aramaic nickname, kêfâ, meaning ‘rock’. The final sigma (s) is added in Greek to make the name masculine rather than feminine. That the meaning of the name was more important than the name itself is evidenced by the universal acceptance of the Greek translation, Πέτρος (Petros). It is not known why Paul uses the Aramaic name rather than the Greek name for Simon Peter when he writes to the churches in Galatia and Corinth. He may have been writing at a time before Cephas came to be popularly known as Peter. According to some Church Fathers, such as Clement of Alexandria and Eusebius of Caesarea, there were two people named Cephas: one was Apostle Simon Peter, and the other was one of Jesus’ Seventy Apostles. Clement goes further to say it was Cephas of the Seventy who was condemned by Paul in Galatians 2 for not eating with the Gentiles.

In Aramaic, it could be (כיפא).

with all of this information and even more that can be found throughtout the bible,… why dont people come to understand that PETER is ROCK and Jesus founded his church, his catholic church, ON him?

Hello jpaul. thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut…
exactly!—>

“Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.” Colossians 2:16-17

why dont people understand this?? it just seems unbelievable… can anyone help me out here? with an adventist or protestant point of view??
