Sex abuse report released, finds majority of alleged offenders no longer active in priestly ministry

Washington D.C., Mar 15, 2009 / 11:34 am (CNA).- The 2008 report of the National Review Board established to examine clerical sexual abuse in the U.S. has been released, saying that most recent claims of abuse concern alleged offenses from 35 to 40 years ago and reporting that most alleged offenders are deceased or out of the priestly ministry.
The National Review Board’s 2008 Annual Report on the Implementation of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People includes audit results of 188 of the 195 diocese and eparchies in the United States. The report also presents 2008 data collected by the Georgetown University-based Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) for its Annual Survey of Allegations and Costs.
According to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) press release summarizing the report, U.S. dioceses altogether received ten credible allegations of clerical abuse offenses committed against a minor in 2008.

Very encouraging! May the Lord continue to grant us the graces for conversion and may we all relearn what the Church has always taught us. That we must never fail to pray for all those who serve in the religious life.

I wonder if all religious sects and public schools have done the same? Oh wait they can’t be sued their statute of limitations is past.

Look I have been made aware of abuses by those in affiliated with the Catholic Church. IMHO if adults were able to go back 40 or more years for all abuse (myself included) the public would know the whole truth of the American child sexual abuse since the 1950’s.

I think the Church has been more than honorable in its handling of the abuses. Most organizations would hire an attorney and fight it every step of the way including the statute. The Church went back 50 years.

The Church admitted guilt and has made huge payouts.

My feelings exactly. What I think is wrong is it was not aimed at the abusers it is aimed at only those abusers that were affiliated with the Catholic Church. This is why I consider it a witch hunt.

If this had not been against the Catholic Church, the witch hunts would have not been allowed to go forward especially on those accused that are now dead or in nursing homes that can not defend themselves.

The majority of alleged offenders are no longer active in priestly ministry.

I wonder how many innocent priests have been dismissed from active ministry and had their lives ruined because of an allegation which didn’t even make it to court.

Well those in social services and some that counsel people have done no one, including their clients, in using “suppressed memory”. It has been shown that in many (maybe most) people these “past” memories are not factual but suggested.

All memories of things past tend to become better (if you have a positive outlook in life) or worse (usually when things were not as you wished they had been) as we get older.

Sadly those accused of wrong doing are no longer to defend themselves from the accusations and their employer (Catholic Church) just pays through the pew.
