What we need is a ‘nuke & pave’.
  1. Forcibly retire all the Bishops in the US, and have Benedict appoint new ones. There has been enough beating around the bush.
  2. Clean out all the heterodox theologians in our seminaries. Start testing priest candidates for SSA> Still allow them into the seminary, but deny them ordination until they’re cured of the problem.
  3. Hit the religious orders> make sure there is accountability for what is taught. No more ‘Nuns for Choice’ ever again.
  4. Bring back the Inquisition full force. Look into each diocese in the US. Have Inquisitors visit Sunday Mass incognito…sorta like a secret shopper…
Sure, a crapload of people will flee the Church like rats from a sinking ship, but the Church doesn’t need them. They need the Church. Vigorously enforce orthodoxy. If a Catholic politician starts speaking out contrary to Church teaching, give that person a very public warning, then excommunicate their butt if they persist.

We are in serious need of a good spring cleaning…

Well, actually, she does. As much as Rome hates American dissent, it loves American money. I think it would love to purge the American Church, but it is afraid that it will lose too many “paying customers”. It is American money that not only keeps Rome afloat, but supports almost all third world missions.

Who would pay the bills? Europe? Africa? Latin America?

Money isn’t the only reason Rome allowed the American church such leeway: Nativist anti-Catholicism was another.

One of my first memories is of the election of 1960. Remember the sentiment in my small protestant Connecticut town. JFK would take orders from Rome! And we were liberal prots! Imagine what others were saying.

There were echoes of that attitude in the last election and in the analysis which has followed. Cardinal Ratzinger ordered American archbishops to become involved in the election. Americans United for Separation of State (which began in the 1940s as an anti-Catholic group) complained to the IRS about what some Catholic clergy were saying.

Anti-Catholic sentiment of nativist movements has been part of the American political scene since the early 19th century. I actually felt the last election was very different in that Kerry was considered “not Catholic enough” where Kennedy was “too Catholic”. In reality, they were very similar Catholics.

I don’t doubt that there is merit in your thesis; however, I remain convinced that money is the dominant driving force. The deficit in the Vatican budget mirrors the value of the U.S. dollar and America gives more money to Rome than all of Europe combined.

I think they should do something about Catholic priests who say that they are Dracula and that gives them the right to homosexual sex. See the following:

Yeah, this one pissed me off…it was right in my backyard (this parish is about 3 miles from my house)…

Truly sickening. I don’t understand how these people are getting into the seminaries…

I agree with most of your post. Get rid of the chaff and there will be more practicing Catholics - and more contributions, not less.
