A question for those who may have a better understanding of canon law. Concerning the sacrament of marriage, is it against canon law for the wedded couple to consummate their marrage on holy ground, or in any Catholic sanctuary in general?

I find it interesting that most of all the other sacraments: Baptism, Confession, Confirmation, Eucharist, and Holy Orders find their completion in the church, but with Holy Matrimony, the marriage is not complete until it is consummated by the man and his wife.

Is the procreative act between man and woman perhaps too sinful for holy grounds? 🤷

Why not have a marriage room attached to the church? I know Eastern priests have been known to actually process to the wedded couples’ home, where the bed is blessed!

Thanks for your answers! 🙂

I’ve got nothing to point to here, but it sure seems naughty and “wrong.” I suppose there could be the extremely rare possibility that it would be “right” but I can’t even think of the justification or reason.

it would give the cleaning crews on monday a whole new job description.

Are you talking about a public consummation? Are you familiar with the word privacy? Or, do you want to go back to the days when certain people watched the marital act to make sure the bride was a virgin?

I think he’s referring to the sacramental nature of marriage.
And it does make sense… in a strange way.

I kind of like the idea of the marriage bed being blessed.

OK, this is just going too far.

And what about all those cohabiting couples? Wouldn’t this bed blessing be a little late?

But a Catholic priest wouldn’t even think of marrying two people if he knew they were co-habiting leading up to the wedding. 🙂

He wouldn’t??

I can just see the wedding party making the trip to (where?) for the “consummation ceremony.” Talk about performance pressure. The couple may need both Valium and Viagra.

Hey, if the priest can bless those too, all the more power. 😃

We only view this as “wrong” because thats how society conditions us to react. I don’t think having a “marriage room” would be a bad idea, but I would only do it if they were the ones cleaning the room afterward! And I mean clean!

Sex is a beautiful act. A gift given by God to those he calls to marriage. To call intimacy between a husband and wife wrong and naughty is a sin itself IMO. No gift of God’s can be wrong unless done by people who have no right to it aka non married folks.

The idea may seem silly because it is a private act and should remain that way, but it does bring to light a good question…of why exactly we are all so fast to jump into the “sex is wrong” idea. Its a taboo subject and I really don’t get why. I suppose because our culture uses it and exploits it in sinful ways.

I think blessing a marriage bed is a good idea.

Just to make it clear:
My “O_O” reaction was to an earlier version of the OP, which didn’t have all the clarifications.

The marriage act is a source of grace between a husband, wife and God. This creepy little scenario though brings up too many questions. What if the couple plans to contracept? Then this action would not be one worthy of taking place in a holy place. Or what if the couple marries in Stage 2 of NFP? Does everyone need to wait a week and then return for the grand finale?

Sex isn’t dirty. But some things are held in such respect, we do not share them with the world. The moment my children were born was a holy time, but I wouldn’t want the world viewing that.

Must be a slow day for the OP.

Or what if they are just way tired from the wedding and plan to wait a day or two?

Nobody is saying marital sex is wrong.

But it is private.

Or should be.

I understand some celebrities have taped the events for public consumption.

There’s something creepy about the idea … not necessarily sinful … but certainly totally antithetical to the nature of marriage as a sacrament mirroring God’s love rather than a simple vehicle for lust.

I mean for heaven’s sake, any self-, other- or God- respecting couple should be able to wait at least fifteen minutes to leave the Church before they consummate the marriage!

Plenty of acts are totally innocent - eating, brushing your teeth, going to the bathroom - but are inappropriate for a church, or indeed many other places both public and private.

This thread is highly amusing.
Yeah, but I’m sure somebody will go to their priest with this request for their wedding!

And will wedding photographers and videographers charge extra to cover this aspect of the ceremony? Of course! Plus it will be a big hit on Youtube.

Hmm, don’t know how that can be done…
Code:
   Wow, sex in the sanctuary.
(Knock)
Priest: Who is it?
Ned: It’s us, Ned and Sandy. We’d like to go inside the church if you don’t mind?
Priest: Sure. How long do you think you’ll be in there?
Ned: Oh, I’m thinking about 45 minutes.
Code:
                     :o
Oh, and not to mention what the priest might be thinking the next morning when he’s celebrating Mass knowing what went on at that spot.
