Over 50 years, when it started to become known that the RCC would cover up for clergy who were molesting kids… And they just kept it under the table, and bemoaned the sinful conditiojn of mankind, rather than go in and clean out the vermin among the clergy…
I know we recently had a priest who fell into temptation with a woman parishoner, and he resigned coming out of his confession, upon the direction of his spiritual father, and went to a monastery to finish out the remaining years of his life…
THAT’s how it’s done…
And even IF you insist on hiding the offenders in the confessional, you can at least give them obediences that preclude repetitions, but even this is not done… Absolutely NOTHING is done, and so the guilty are protected by the Church…
At the very least, the instruction to children who are victims can be changed to insist that they go to the police out of the confessional with their parents… I mean, the message has to come out loud and very clear, that the Church’s kids are NOT the private sandbox of a protected clergy who exploits them as toys…
And I think that beginning steps have been taken, and that a LOT more need to be taken… This weak-kneed psycho-babble of seeking psychiatric intervention as the first step of dealing with child molesters who are priests is just wrong. The very FIRST step in the treatment of their souls is heavy penance of prayer, fasting, and hard labors with little sleep and a lot of isolation from kids… And instead, they are given forgiveness, and then Communion, and then are kept in the places of temptation that are killing their souls…
It is good neither for the clergy - Especially for the clergy - nor for the children who are their victims… The message must be clear and forceful, and then followed up upon rigorously… And there must be implemented proactive measures that ASK children about these kinds of issues… And then pursue results, and depose clergy who lie…
