Whenever I read the Ten Commandments, it’s almost funny to say that I have honestly NEVER had an overwhelming, deep burning almost uncontrollable desire to steal, dishonor my parents, murder, covet my neighbor’s wife or goods. But why in the world is sexual sin so difficult to stop? If something else is your biggest struggle, it would be interesting to hear from you!

🙂

To me, we humans were made with sex “on our minds”. Men do nothing but think about it all the time. It is like God made this so strong within us, but yet then turned around and told us “no”. How hard is that??? It doesn’t make sense to me.
And, even if partners are committed to each other, love each other; it doesn’t take much for one to “look” at the opposite sex and have sexual desires arise. We are sexual beings and were made that way; the tough challenge is to stay out of that sexual sin area! How does God really expect humans to do that???

God didn’t tell us “no,” he just told us, “Here are some guidelines.” The same desire that attracts us to our spouses works the same toward others. We’re not animals, so we shouldn’t act like it. Like much of creation, there’s a Catch-22: We wouldn’t know pleasure if there was no such thing as pain. Likewise, we wouldn’t seek out and find a spouse if we didn’t have those “urges,” and God’s plan would be over pretty quickly, as nobody would have the desire to procreate and continue the race. It’s a necessity of this creation. Don’t give up.

Sexual sin would be far down the list of temptations if it were marketed 24/7 on TV, Books, Magazines, etc.

If you truly think about it, don’t you find that sins of speech are committed far more often in your daily lives?

For example:

How many times a day do you commit adultery?
How many times a day do you WANT to commit adultery?
How many times a day do you indulge in solitary impure acts?
How many times a day do you WANT to ISIA?

now for the big one -

How many times a day do you snap at others, grumble, tell white lies, tell black lies, use profanity, carelessly take God’s name in vain, tell off color jokes, make suggestive remarks, make impious remarks, gossip, and/or tattle?

For most of us, I just have to believe that sins of speech pose a much larger threat to our eternal life than sexual sins, but because they don’t get the same coverage we don’t even take them seriously a lot of the time.

At the risk of sounding heretical, I have come to believe that the story of Adam & Eve may possibly be simply a metaphor for a story of sexual sin!

While I am far from perfect, sins of speech are not a major issue for me. Never have I felt actually DRIVEN to sin through speech.

Sexual temptation and sexual sin on the other hand sneaks up and attacks in the most brutal manner. It a lot like slipping on “black ice”. One minute you are walking along just fine and the next minute you are flat on your back wondering what happened.

😦

I believe the key is to prepare yourself beforehand. Temptation begins the moment you turn on a TV, look at a magazine or newspaper, or walk out your front door. If you’re expecting temptation, and “prepare your mind for action,” you will be much better prepared to deal with that temptation. That’s just my personal experience. I also think there is a major difference between being tempted and actually entertaining impure/immoral thoughts. Using certain passages of scripture as “mantras” seems to help me, e.g. “Take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ.”

I am one of these people who is considered passionate overall by nature. The result of this is that I am prone to all the passions (good and bad, btw). Those of us in this camp struggle with a number of cardinal sins – or the passions governing particular sins. I won’t say that sexual temptations are not, and have not been, prominent in my life. However, other categories of sin are ones which, for me, present even greater problems on a regular basis – get me into greater trouble vis-a-vis my relationships with others and separation from God. They also interfere with prayer itself, in that they redirect me away from God and toward myself (i.e., “lower nature”).

Also, understand that The Commandments list the “umbrella” categories, but not the subsets of any of those. That is up to each of us to examine honestly, discovering that probably in the congregate, we have all been guilty of breaking almost all the commandments. No, we haven’t adulterized; we’ve done other things. No, we haven’t murdered; we’ve done great violence with words. No, we haven’t dishonored parents; we’ve dishonored in some serious aspect or incident, our parental role. No, we haven’t constructed golden calves; we’ve substituted materialism in general as our idol, or our personal pleasure (physical or otherwise) as our idol. No, we haven’t committed Grand Theft; we’ve regularly cheated our employer out of a just day’s labor through laziness, calling in sick dishonestly, etc. No, we don’t have an “overwhelming urge to lie”; we’ve merely misrepresented the truth in countless ways on legal forms, tax returns, resumes, reports to our employer or to our spouse/family/friends/dates.

In this sense, most adults have probably in some fashion broken every commandment. It’s just that the non-sexual transgressions are sometimes more subtle to notice & acknowledge.

Excellent Thread. however; I must say I’m a little perplexed looking at the poll results here…ONLY 11.76 % of women verses 70.59 % of men who say Sexual Sin is one of our toughest problems living individually as human beings ? ? ?

Something does not add up to revealing the true picture concerning Sexual Sin in both Men and Women.

Personally; I never pay much attention to seeing the full truth in this highly opinionated discussion. Why ? Because I don’t believe the full truth and scope of how Sexual sins is truly reflected with both human sexes. The Poll numbers speak for themselves.

I will say that yes it is likely that men have a greater problem with sins of a sexual nature than woman do. Am I to believe that (((“ONLY”))) 11.76 % of woman have a problem with sins of a sexual nature ? Sorry; but, I have a problem with these figures.

Because what differs is hormonal programming. We are programmed for it. We are destined to be weakened by it’s action. If there were no other class of sin, would it be considered a norm that the statistics find only mature people in hell? Of course not. This is where blanket rules and ways to judge them fall through.

The difference is why I feel it should not be parceled in severity
with typical mortal sins. There should be adequate compensation to balance out the exceptional weakness that can only aid temptation, and one way of many I’m sure would be to apply a token adjustment at trial.

In other words for each of the classes you state, if we could quantify culpability in measures that sum up exactly equal to one unit called a mortal sin, then there should be a default token of reduction in similar measure to compensate for the hormonal factor in sexual sins BEFORE the sentencing is considered.

You are misinterpreting the numbers. It isn’t a matter of only 11.76% of women have a problem with sins of a sexual nature. It is a matter of only 11.76% of women say sexual sin is one of our toughest problems living individually as human beings.

Do I ever see a bit of beef cake and think an impure thought? Yes, but not often. Do I dwell on it and later commit an impure act? Rarely. Does this demonstrate a problem with sins of a sexual nature? Yes. Does it demonstrate sins of a sexual nature being one of my toughest problems? Not for a second. I have many sin problems that eclipse those of a sexual nature almost completely.

I have no trouble with chastity. But as I understand it, we were made with instincts. It’s what God gave us.

It may be for the sake of living lives without complexity or something else that I’m admittedly afraid to state, but sexual sin is definitely the easiest to commit, considering how many restrictions the Church has emphasized.

How many times a day do you commit adultery?fbl9 used be every time i saw a good looking girl
How many times a day do you WANT to commit adultery?fbl9 see above
How many times a day do you indulge in solitary impure acts?fbl9 used to be at least once
How many times a day do you WANT to ISIA?fbl9 not sure want is implied so no response

now that i have came back to the Church my desires are entirely different…i take care to guard my tongue though i do slip but in all due respect i fall more often in the reallm of sexual sin…when i slip with my tongue repentance comes just as quick as words leave.not so with sx sin…

Now I have no understanding of your situation. It is just totally foreign to me. It must be the difference between men and women. Now if I lose my temper and verbally skin you alive (a talent of mine) I would sooner cut out my tongue than apologize. Speech sins are a constant temptation to be fought off for me. But lusting after strange men just because they are attractive? It just isn’t an issue.

yep i would place you in the majority of women is this regard(sexul temptaions/thoughts)i have learned where and how to direct my sexual energy, through Christ and His Church…so i no longer “lust” after a foxy lady…though if i am not on guard she can catch my attention…:o
it’s not so much as what one sees but what one does with the sights…

I think it is the only sin which can seem “harmless”.
  • its something both parties want
  • contraceptive techniques reduce the threat of spreading disease
  • the bible is replete with sexual sin and we presume David, Lot and his daughters, etc., are in heaven

Hi Marsha;

I am not disputing anything you are saying here. I actually like many of your post’s here and in other threads. While it is not my intention to misconstrue any of your (name removed by moderator)ut in this thread my mind for the moment is contemplating thoughts about Genesis
Chapter 2 where God creates Man And Woman in His image in grand scheme His wonderous creation for His Glory. Genesis Chap 2: verse 25 ("And they were both naked. Adam and his wife Eve were "Not Ashamed’ ) Later in Genesis Chap 3 we read of both Adam & Eve partaking of the Tree of Knowledge that God forbade them to eat because they would know both Good & Evil. After eating their eyes were both opened and when they perceived themselves naked they sewed together fig leaves and made themselves aprons.
And when they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in paradise at the afternoon air, Adam and his wife hid themselves from the face of the Lord God, amidst the trees of paradise.
And the Lord God called Adam, and said to him: Where art thou ?
And he said: I heard thy voice in paradise; and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself. And he said to him: And who hath told thee that thou wast naked ?

Why did Adam & Eve hide themselves and cover up their nakedness ? (“Was it not because they were Shamed by their Sexual Lust for one another”) beside the fact that the Serpent had persuaded them to disobey God ?

We men and women today have not really changed are behavioral aptitudes like our ancestral parents towards sexual lust for one another. Who would think that it is our own primitive sexual behaviors in life that will cause many human souls to enter into eternal damnation. Sins of sexual nature along with pride is how Satan plans to bring many human souls to Hell.

Not many would readily admit it but Sexual Sins and Pride is a Huge Challenge for Most Humans.

Why did Adam & Eve hide themselves and cover up their nakedness ? (“Was it not because they were Shamed by their Sexual Lust for one another”) beside the fact that the Serpent had persuaded them to disobey God ?
Only my opinion, but I don’t think their “lust for one another” was the source of their shame. If you woke up one morning in Times Square buck naked wouldn’t you be ashamed? Before the fall Adam and Eve were clothed in light, less tangible than denim, but clothed nevertheless. After the fall they were caught in the altogether, that was the source of their embarassment.

Where if you consider that we are created through a sexual act, it is not a wonder that sexuality be the center of our being almost competing with God. Perhaps this is where the problem come from. Somehow unknowingly these two force which participate in our creation are competing within us!

Frankly when you think about it; every human being you see, represent a ‘high’ sexual moment in history. Sexual energy seem to surround us or be part of our being…

I guess our challenge is more precisly idolatry: Sex or God

God bless
