Well, I won’t hold my breath waiting for the big APA study proclaiming that sex before marriage is bad for you.
The sexualizing of young girls and boys, has nothing to do with sex before marriage. There are many secular people who are horrified by it, and have been fighting against it for hundreds of years. This is not news to them either.

But sexualizing children, and or making people believe that a woman is an object purely for sexual desire has nothing to do with couples making a commitment to each other, and choosing to try their relationship out(co-habit and physical intimacy) before they make a lifelong commitment.

Quite frankly, forcing people to wait until marriage, is just as bad as forcing some-one to have intercourse at too young of an age and/or making them believe they are only worth what other’s think of them.

What amazes me, with some of the comments in this thread, is that the problem with women being seen as objects, INCLUDING a wife whose job it is to cook, clean and breed is something that feminists and secular society worked hard to avoid. IE…women are worth MORE than the role society chose for them, which includes sexual pleasure. Now all of a sudden it’s the “catholics” that realize the folly of forcing women into a role that does not reflect her self-worth?

Please tell me how a woman was to work and take care of herself 400 years ago? Please tell me how a woman was to get an annulment from a dreadful marriage 400 years ago? This viewing of women as 2nd class citizens has a long history, and christianity has been very much a part of it and there are quite a few bible passages that support this disrepect and disregard for females.

If you want to create change, you won’t get anyone other than those sitting beside you in mass to listen if you cannot see your churches own history and the damage it has done as well.

I want us to do something about this horrible youth culture but how are we supposed to work together on this, when all I see is an “I told you so attitude”… when it was actually the secular people who were instrumental in pushing for equal rights, and respect for the individual human in the first place?

What? Since when does society choose a role for anyone? With the exception of being drafted into the military we each have a right to choose what ever role we want to play in life. Yes many women choose to be stay at home moms and some women choose to work. Many people choose those roles based on their individual skills and abilities. I would love to be a stay at home dad but I am more qualified as a worker and therefore feel it is my families best interest for me to be the bread winner. These are decisions each family makes on their own. Why do you feel inclined to find fault with these personal decisions?

Forcing people to wait for what? Sex? If anybody is forcing that, it doesn’t seem to be working. People have always been able to obtain sex before marriage, through a variety of means—prostitution, adultery, fornication, and co-habitation. But there has been a question of whether those extramarital means were good for society. I think they are not; as they have increased, so has the disintegration of the family, and that is not conducive to our national survival.

Do people have to ‘try each other out’ like trying on clothing at a fitting room? That seems pretty objectifying to me. Can parents also try out their children and reject them if the relationship doesn’t feel right?

It’s WRONG to have sex before marriage.

WRONG.

There is no way around it. You may not treat people as though they were pieces of meat without souls, or mere rutting animals.

Our weakness as Catholics has helped the world to become the mess that it is today.

I was not aware that the Catholic Church forced anyone to do anything. Honestly, we don’t have ninja priest knocking down the doors of sexually active young people. 😛 We have free will and can choose to obey or not obey Christian standards of sexuality.

I am not antifeminist but I do take issue with some of your quote. First, having children is not breeding. You demean mothers everywhere by saying so. Second, my grandmother and her mother both worked outside the home. Poor, rural women have always worked as have poor city women. 🤷

Catholics haven’t discovered this all of a sudden.

Women could be seamstresses, fishwives etc. But they were poor and looked down upon. Then again, men who were poor were looked down upon also. Life was harsh for everyone in the 1600’s. I read somewhere that half of all children died before they reached adulthood. My point is that EVERYONE had it rough during this time period. Of course, we are getting off topic on this thread.🙂

I don’t know the legal history behind annulements but I would assume that she would suffer just like a man in a bad marriage.

Could you start another thread? The subject is worthwhile to debate but you and I will derail the thread by doing so.🙂
If you want to create change, you won’t get anyone other than those sitting beside you in mass to listen if you cannot see your churches own history and the damage it has done as well.
Again, this subject will derail the thread because it is so broad. You can start a thread on church history if you like. That would be fascinating.

If you doubt that hyper-sexualization of girls is taking place, create a Facebook account. Then pick a local high school, Catholic or otherwise, and browse around the profiles of 14 - 17 year old girls. Be prepared. Of course, it’s not everyone and the public profiles you see are likely the most outrageous.

Probably not good advice for older members of the discussion. but it does lead to the thought that these individuals are not being put on stage (pysical or electronic) before more than just their peers. Any one can see these individuals with who knows what intentions.

There were similar complaints in Socrates’ time. Society is falling apart because of the degeneration of our youth.
Somehow we’re still here and functioning as a society. Many think that we have even made progress as a culture over the last 2300 odd years.

Get over it. You’re tilting at windmills.

Draftdog,
You’re saying that the sexualiztion of girls is acceptable then?

SEXUALIZATION OF GIRLS IS LINKED TO COMMON MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS IN GIRLS AND WOMEN—--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC—A report of the American Psychological Association (APA) released today found evidence that the proliferation of sexualized images of girls and young women in advertising, merchandising, and media is harmful to girls’ self-image and healthy development.

The harm that sexual molestation, assault and exploitation has been acknowledged for some time. What is happening in the media is mass sexual exploitation or assault, depending on the severity.

Get over what?

Scott Adams has an interesting commentary on how some women view relationships.

The issues addressed in this thread do, in my opinion, create the behavior being mocked in the cartoon.
