Is there any trascriptions of the Shakespeare plays into a narrative form? I would love to read more Shakespeare, but I cannot get into the format of the plays. Any suggestions?

I had a book one time that had the original format that Shakespeare wrote in. The Complete Works of Shakespeare I think it was called.

Many have been pretty faithfully adapted into movies. Would those be easier?

No, I really want to read Shakespeare.

On this note though- Much Ado About Nothing is being released. It was adapted in a modern day version with the classic dialogue by Joss Whedon.

They’re really meant to be seen; that’s why they’re hard to read in play form.

It’d be hard to make a prose adaptation without adding a lot, since they’re 95% dialogue.

Actually, it really needs to be read to understand the full scope of what Shakespeare was talking about. Or it wouldn’t be Shakespeare now would it??

No, he was writing plays. They’re meant to be seen on the stage.

I mean if someone wrote a great movie script, you would still need to see the movie to get the full impact. Every time I’ve studied Shakespeare in class, it’s always been accompanied by a corresponding movie after we finished reading. 🤷

I think you miss the point of Shakespeare if you don’t see him acted.

He wasn’t primarily about witty word usage, but a travelogue, of sorts, through human experience as acted out by genuine human beings.

I have been able to see several of his plays acted, including once in England. Unfortunately, the minor town I now reside in has no such performances.

My guess is that a narrative Shakespeare, like a movie novelization, would not be worth the trouble, and for the same reason: addition of tons of verbal fluff to create the narrative. If you can’t get to a stage version of Shakespeare, see the movie versions on DVD after reading the plays.

I guess you have a point there. Most people can’t grasp the words itself so yes, seeing it in action helps people to understand human emotions. And you know, even back in his time, people were still doing the same things we did. The same mistakes and sins too. lol.

Indeed!

There would be no point at all to Shakespeare if human beings and life were not essentially the same!!! 🙂

I wonder what made him wrote all that? For the same reason we are talking about? lol.

But I heard he was a poor man? Did they paid him to write those stories?
I don’t know about him being poor. I’ve been to his house in England; it’s about what you would expect for that period of time. It wasn’t a shack.

Of course he was paid for his writing.

Oh wow! I would love to go to his house. Where might that be at?? I am glad he was paid for his writing.

Yes, now that you mentioned it. Yes, I remembered that from reading about him. Isn’t that by a river?
Yes, the River Avon. (Therefore Stratford upon Avon).

The Royal Shakespeare Company’s theatre is there.

Yes, that is what I thought. I remembered seeing a pic of the theatre. Such a grand old small place huh? Or have they added on to it?

I used the York Notes as study guides. They were helpful for me when reading the plays.
