Why is harshness frowned upon or shaming someone? Which is worse, to let someone continue on their own sinful way? How do you help yourself out of hang-ups and wounded pride? Living in the present, NOT letting past minor “injustices” or “disappointments” overwhelm you.

Its called forgiving - forgiving others is how those wounds are healed. Lots of people think forgiving is about the other person and can never do it. But its really about healing yourself. It doesn’t even matter what that other person thinks. Forgiveness will take that entire weight off your shoulder if you do it. If you say the Lords prayer its something that you promise God the Father that you are going to do. Shouldn’t say the prayer if your not prepared to do it.

Sound so hard to do but it actually very easy when your understand the benefits of doing it.Its not about what others have done to you its about letting it go.
A lot of people will say no-way will I forgive and they end up going through life with heavy resentments which eventually overwhelm them Then the question comes up again how can we ask God to forgive us if we can’t forgive others.

But my words will fall on deaf ears to some - other will know this truth. Hang on to it if you want - its a cancer of the soul and forgiving others is the only cure.

The simple Our Lord’s prayer will help

I don’t understand how these two questions are tied together.

Harshness in correcting someone is very difficult to pull off. Do not attempt until you are over the age of 40 [with caveats about a parent correcting a child]. MYOB when you are young.

IME, your second part about injustices, has mostly to with a person’s temperament. I’ve never really had a hard time forgiving people or letting something go because things usually don’t bother me in the first place. OTOH, some people are easily offended, take everything personally, or just cannot stay out of other peoples business. Which are you?

Ok. I don’t share the same temperament as you do clearly.

In almost every instance, harshness and shaming will have the opposite effect you’re attempting to achieve, causing people to defend the action you’re criticizing and embrace it more tightly.

How do you depersonalize offenses?

Especially when I was younger, most times I wouldn’t even know that someone was trying to offend me. 🤷 So my reaction to them would always be honest, and given without an attitude; that was something they didn’t expect, so that would be the end of it.

But now, if someone says or does something to try to get under my skin, I just ignore it. Cutting other people down, or doing things to get under someone’s skin is not something that I do to other people - it never was, I wasn’t raised that way; but the older I get the more I see that sort of behavior as an MO for some people, so I just see it as a problem that the other person has, it’s not my problem.

👍

Adults fight when they feel cornered. Always leave them a way out.

Shame is fear due to past mistakes and is part of nature. This comes from within the person, not from without (outside the person).
Which is worse, to let someone continue on their own sinful way?
“O wicked man, thou shalt surely die: if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked man from his way” (Ez 33:8) Fr. Wade Menezes says this should be done rarely (meaning once if you never see the person again, or if you are with them regularly - not to nag), with humility, and charitably.

Frequent confession. For St. Philip Neri says this practice is the most effective in order to live habits with humility. Humility of which is the remedy.

There is a difference between shame and shaming. Shaming does come from without. And shame can be an appropriate feeling due to one’s own actions or inaction; but it can be an unhealthy reaction when the shame is due to the sinful, criminal actions of others such as in cases of domestic violence or sexual assault.

Another person doesn’t have the power to shame someone?
They can. Shaming, like other forms of bullying and abuse, may appear to work, particularly on people who are vulnerable and weak. I say “appears to” because once they become older, more mature, or have an ally or advocate (in case the vulnerability is caused by a disability or age) that person will be less likely to be affected by shaming. A person with a strong sense of who they are, who know their worth are less vulnerable (but not invulnerable, since we all have our moments). We should be able to be vulnerable, let our guard down, and not fear that someone will use our faults and failings against us but I can’t recommend that.
