We must, especially in these times, pray ardently for all religious in the Church.

She may well be suffering from some form of dementia or other medical issue. Let us pray that they get her a good medical exam.

The issue with news stories is that we may not have all of the facts. Perhaps it could have been a misunderstanding or she has some type of illness.

I am praying for her.

Unless we get a follow-up as to what happened, this would be a case of yellow-journalism, where some facts are sensationalized.

I’d like to see the security camera footage.

This incident strikes me several ways, one is the humor that superficially runs through it – the irony of a nun “shoplifting.”

At the same time, it’s an example of how some of our brothers and sisters (and I’m not referring to those under vows, but all of our Catholic brothers and sisters) are not cared for by US ! how did she get 20 miles away, if she had a dementia problem? was there an “amber alert” or the equivalent for her?

Is this woman really a nun?

Thats strange, around here, Ive seen people get arrested for shoplifting!!! Walmart is especially tough on this, they post all the shoplifters photo and what they were caught stealing, they ALWAYS have police come and arrest them, even if the value is a few bucks, LOL, I would think police would get a little sick of this kind of thing, having to arrest someone over $5.!

I always thought shoplifting was like mentioned in the article…akin to a traffic offense, no arrest or jail, pay and fine and done…?? Have things changed?

This is disappointing beyond words. Especially disappointing are the comments from the manager, saying he was shocked that a nun would do something like that and the other lady commenting that the “world has gone to hell.” Back when I was young & stupid, a friend and I were busted for shoplifting. One of the best things that ever happened to me. I never shoplifted again, believe me.
I’m sure she knew what she was doing. The article says she appears to be of sound mind so we can probably discard this notion of any sort of dementia. She wanted coffee and soap and shampoo and made a conscious decision to steal it.

I don’t know anything about the sisters of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, perhaps they’re one of the kookier orders for women in the Church who don’t care what’s right or wrong anymore and ride buses and support Obama(I know, cheap shot). I mean, since when can a nun simply get in a car and drive 20 miles somewhere? And aren’t nuns supposed to travel in pairs? Some of this stuff doesn’t add up.

I’ll offer up a prayer for her tonight. I know what it must be like for her. I’ve done it too.

Or it could be that she wanted the items so she stole them.

That could be, Ive known a handful of older people that would shoplift certain items, and didnt seem to think there was anything wrong with it! reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where Jerrys parents talk about shoplifting batteries…they just dont last that long! lol

If this was just an elderly woman shoplifting, the story would barely have made local news outlets.

But, being a nun, this incident is stunning. and, why? Well everybody expects the highest moral standards from the faith WITH the highest moral standards. This news is still good news in a way, that people still hold up the Catholic Faith as always remarkable.

But, it’s bad, obviously, for being the bad news that it is, petty theft.

It is also fodder for anti-Catholics.

This seems like opportunistic journalism to me. This nun/sister deserves treatment- not to be ridiculed.

How many shoplifters receive national attention. It’s not fair.

How do you know she deserves treatment?

At 78, it’s possible that she simply became distracted and forgot to pay. When I had my first child, she was a premie and I had to set the alarm every two hours at night to wake her up to feed her. I was working full time. After work one day, I stopped to get gas. I drove off with the $20 still in my hand. I didn’t realize it until the babysitter asked why I had $20 in my hand.😊 I quickly drove back to the gas station and paid. They were really nice about it.

She is 78 years old stealing goods which are provided for her through her order. It sounds as if this sister has a psychological issue.
You cant know that, youre expressing a narrative not factual.

Some orders do not allow coffee and snacks.
I don’t know about snacks, but I’m sure just about every monastery/ convent is stocked with ample amounts of coffee. They wake up pretty early in the morning to start their day. That’s no excuse for her behavior, of course.

We can only speculate on the reasons why she would do this. Maybe the convent serves poor quality coffee and sub standard toiletries such as soap and shampoo. Maybe she did it for kicks. Maybe her companion sister she should have been traveling with was driving the getaway vehicle. We just don’t know. I think it’s a shame that something like this has to happen to her at her age because she may not live long enough to get over it. At 78 years old, it is time to reflect on your life, the good and the bad. This will likely leave permanent scars not only on her, but on the entire community. Then again, maybe it was meant to happen, like all the sex abuse scandals that shook up the Church. Call it the Great Cleansing if you like. Perhaps sister Agnes will meet a similar fate within her community.
