Priests have so much to think and worry about. I’m to trying to be mean but I think they should be given every benefit of the doubt. I’d just let it go.

Were you out by the fire or are you making the assumption based on what you heard over the mic?

Have you sat down with your pastor and asked about your concerns?

There have been a few times when I’ve been to Mass when he’s been celebrant and the Roman Missal sat on the altar for the entire Liturgy of the Eucharist without being opened.
Priests after awhile have the parts of Mass committed to memory.

When inviting us to attend the Easter Vigil, Father pointed out that we probably have watched movies or attended concerts that were longer than the Vigil. It put things into perspective for some I think. The church was packed this year!

The lights are supposed to come on before the Exsultet! according to the Roman Missal…

Eastern Catholics seem to do well with a minimum of an hour and longer. I’m sure we’re just as busy as everyone else.
We’re almost always under an hour, even with the St. Basil liturgy.

It’s not that anything is omitted, but rather that Father is the world’s fastest singer . . .
Wow. We run about 95 minutes with St. Basil.

But it’s better when they come on with the Gloria. 😜
Dramatic it may be but liturgically it makes no sense to proclaim light and then sit in the dark for 45 minutes. Not to mention the cross of those struggling to read by candlelight because they can’t hear/understand the readers or are more comfortable following along in their own language.

Fair point. 🙂 Though I think there is also symbolism in sitting in the dark during the Old Testament readings from the time before Christ.

… skipping the preface and adding something brief in its place…

🤔

😃

Perhaps he has poor vision – there are several conditions that are uncorrectable by eyeglasses – and is no longer able to read, so he has to work from memory. Give the guy a break!

I pray for the people of your parish: May they love their pastor even with all his faults and failings, and may they, in his care and with God’s grace, grow always in faith, hope, and charity.

Ours is usually an hour or just over. But I’ve heard others say that theirs can run much longer.

Our parish has a compromise position. Half the lights come in before the exultant then more lights come on with each reading until you get to the Gloria when the altar is illuminated.

Drama while still allowing people with questionable eyesight (self-included) to read along with ease.

Cradle Catholics are wimps.

Where I grew up, 9:30am-12:30pm was normal. And then you went back from 6-7:30pm later. Plus at least one midweek service.

If you don’t like the way he does it, go to a Mass where a different priest is celebrating the Mass. Would that not be the easiest thing?

Wow. We run about 95 minutes with St. Basil.
He even has fairly long homilies–and is one of the rare priests that can actually put enough content in and speak well enough to keep the audience for over ten minutes.

But, he sings fast . . .

The Burial Service at St. Melany’s on Friday was a full two hours!

Most of these “why did the priest do this?” questions are best answered by just talking to the priest.

Just have a friendly (ie don’t come at him like a maniac accusing him of heresy and liturgical abuse and all that) and just tell him you noticed he did things a bit differently and you’re curious.

As it should be. Next, you’ll be telling me that Vespers w/St. Basil runs less than 2 hours at your parish!
Do vespers & St. Basil occur together other than Holy Saturday?
Also on Christmas Eve and Theophany Eve, as well as Holy Thursday. Ours usually runs 2 hours 15 minutes. On Theophany Eve it is extremely long because of the Great Blessing of Water.

Theophany is long for us, yes.

I’m rarely at the services on the eves, and missed Thursday this year. I don’t recall from prior years if we have vespers first.
