Out of embarrassment? Because you can’t really justify it?

Look, I have no problem if you don’t like being sleeveless out of personal piety (or whatever it happens to be). Just don’t tell the rest of us that we have to follow just because.

Uhhh, you did quote me. Here’s your post. Notice how you quoted me.
My bad. It was early and I didn’t mean to quote you. Just meant to post a reply.
And I’ve seen it again and again here at CAF (just take a look at any of the HP threads for example) where people elevate their opinions to Divine Law practically. Guess what? They’re not. Get over it.
You actually need to get over your aggressiveness. This isn’t a boxing ring.

I’m only posting my opinion on dress code. We obviously disagree. So?

I 'm not mad. Are you?

If you think you dress appropriately, or if you believe everyone should dress how they want, then keep on thinking that way.

Sometimes my being frank comes across as aggressive.

Passive-agressive comes across more subtle, but it’s a little ironic considering the first line your your reply. No where have I said “dress how you want”. What you’ve done is created a “straw man”, which is where you characterize your opponent in a certain way to as to make them look dumb leaving you to look good. It’s an easier way to debate because it doesn’t actually require you to “raise your arguments up”, instead you “lower the other down”.

And especially with the end of “keep on thinking that way”. I guess “I’ll pray for you” would have been too aggressive though. 😃 It’s a much more subtle tone of disapproval.

You make me smile. Sometimes I want a big debate and sometimes I don’t.

This is just not one of these threads where I’m interested in some long debate. I already debated earlier in the thread, and I was pretty much done once Pnewton posted something which made me see a different perspective.

However, I still feel some people dress inappropriately, and if you don’t think the woman I described dressed inappropriately, then you don’t.

Okay, move on please.

No, I definitely agreed with you that that women was dressed inappropriately. I just said that it’s not a relevant example to this thread because you described a women ready for a work-out or a beauty contest, which is different than someone who’s just wearing shorts.

I’m just pointing out that there’s a difference between what we’re describing (someone wearing ordinary knee-length presentable shorts with a nice acceptable shirt) and what you gave as an example (which is on one of the extremes. That’s not even normal street wear).

You know, I’ve seen several people say this, and yet I’ve seen nothing to back it up. You can have an opinion, but your opinions are not facts.

The response on 1 and 2 is wrong. I suppose you did not bother to watch the homily.
That is fine with me

And for the last one: I listen to what a priest says or advices, not what a regular poster in a forum chooses to obey or disobey.

Several norwegian parish priests urges people to dress modestly at all seasons (including sweaty summerdays like now). And just because they dont use the internet like Fr Mary does, that doesnt mean that those are my words.

You can call them and me all you want, it really doesn`t matter. What matters is to pray, go to mass, do good and get closer to the Lord. I hope you realize that someday.

Please keep the discussion civil and non-personal, everyone. Thank you.

I was humiliated when my son made his First Holy Communion and some friends of mine showed up in shorts and flip-flops for the Mass. Everyone else was wearing their Sunday best (it was my son’s whole class making their FHC), this crew was on their way to the beach after Mass. They sat in the pew reserved for my family, so everyone knew they were with me. Yes, they are Catholic. Wow. 😊

I don’t understand why you were humiliated??

Sounds like the invited friends were dressed for a vollyball game rather than for a First Holy Communion. Why would you be confused about how inappropriate that was?

But in the old mass, people were dressed modestly even at hot days with like 20-25+ celcius. Now what does that tell?

Too me this tells a whole lot. Posters here can accuse me of this and that, but i rather sweat rivers and dress modest than being disobedient and breaking every single etiquette you got in the churchroom and how to behave during mass.
Actually I would not call 20-25+ hot, Just warm.

The temp here at the moment is just over 40c, and I do where shorts when it is like this, otherwise by the time you get to the church you would be dripping.

it is just a matter of being sensible. right clothes for the temperature that it is.

I don’t understand how one person can be humiliated by a different person’s clothes.
Well, I read it to mean that the individual had invited her friends to attend the FHC of her son, and they came dressed for a vollyball game rather than to witness a holy sacrament, and she feels humiliated that her friends came dressed inappropriately, maybe because she feels it reflects on her and she feels partly responsible for the ecclesial faux pas which resulted. Seems like a reasonable, normal human emotion to have, no?

When people dress casually for mass, I think it may indicate their lack of understanding and belief in the True Presence. Lately I have found myself looking at people at mass who are dressed very casually and questioning their faith in Jesus in the Eucharist. I know it is a sin on my part to “look down” on them or judge them in any way for that. I need to assume that their heart is in the right place and do my best to make sure mine is too.

I understand the true presence, but I wear shorts to Mass. I believe that Jesus is always present in my life…I cannot hide from Him. I never wear anything I believe He would disapprove of.

I think that I would rather have this discussion with the person who made the post, but in her abscence, you are ok…🙂

I really don’t see how someone’s clothing reflects upons others. I am not responsible for the clothing that other people, including my friends, wear. I can’t understand why someone would feel responsible. I would be happy that my friends cared enough to come.

Wow…40 C is hot. As a sidething i was thinking of what one would do in extreme situations and yes, i do call 40C+ and so for extreme (It never gets this hot in ole Norway)?

Think i will ask my parish priest when he is back from his holiday. But i do see your point in such conditions. Would not thin khakis or similar work either?

I personally don’t have a problem with “dress” shorts in church. My husband and many other men in my parish regularly wear long dress shorts (think of dress pants that go to the knee, same material etc.) with polo shirts. This is still modest and I think appropriate for mass, especially in the hot humid Mississippi summer. I have also occasionally worn dress shorts to mass, though I usually wear capris or dresses/skirts.

I don’t think that just because someone is wearing shorts it means they don’t have reverence or that they are immodest. That is like saying because 1 or 2 people wear tight mini-skirts to mass, all skirts/dresses are inappropriate and immodest.

I also don’t spend time at mass worrying about what everyone else is wearing.

Still splitting hairs on this subject. Why not cheese cloth or fishnet? A whole lot cooler. Most churches have air conditioning these days anyway.

Congrats on your newlywed status and for “crossing the Tiber” last year. Seriously it took me a while to understand what all this swim team stuff meant that I would see around the forum. 🙂

Would you consider “dress” shorts, a polo and tennies if going out to a really nice restaurant?

Never said they wore tennies, most of them, including my husband wear dress shoes with their dress shorts, and yes I would consider it appropriate for a nice restaurant, again you see this quite often in the hot and humid south.

Personally I would rather see people in dress shorts and polos at mass and actually paying attention to mass than people in 3-piece suits that where just there to see what everyone else is wearing. I am not saying that everyone in a suit is doing that, but it seems to me there are a large number of people that are more worried about what everyone else is wearing at mass than what is happening at mass.

Personally I take a business casual approach to dressing for mass, if it is something I would wear to my job in the corporate office of a large international company, then it is something I would wear to mass.
