More on this, it seems the shooter was outside the white house fence and the white house is on lockdown after a shooting outside the fence. President Trump is continuing his press conference now and made a big slip calling the fence the wall. But I think he is very grateful today to have the fence/wall outside his home.

Most likely wasn’t related. I don’t think Trump was anywhere he could have been seen from the street.

It is a bit too early to say what this was. I was reporting breaking news as it happened.

The suspect is in hospital as he or she was shot in the chest. I am sure all will be revealed in due time.

It was serious enough for the secret service to shoot the shooter and to rush the President out of a televised press conference.

Hasnt it been reported in the States yet?

Update: the investigation into a USSS officer involved shooting is ongoing. A male subject and a USSS officer were both transported to a local hospital. At no time during this incident was the White House complex breached or were any protectees in danger.

The U.S. Secret Service released a statement on the shooting that occurred on Monday afternoon outside the White House, saying that the suspect told authorities that he had a weapon and that he motioned as if he was about to “fire a weapon.”

“At approximately 5:53 PM today, a 51 year old male approached a U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division officer who was standing at his post on the comer of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue N.W. near the White House Complex,” . . .,“The suspect approached the officer and told the officer he had a weapon. The suspect then turned around, ran aggressively towards the officer, and in a drawing motion, withdrew an object from his clothing. He then crouched into a shooter’s stance as if about to fire a weapon. The Secret Service officer discharged his weapon striking the individual in the torso.”

. . . “Both the suspect and the officer were transported to local hospitals. The White House Complex was not breached during the incident and no Secret Service protectees were ever in danger.” . . .

. . . The incident happened during a White House press briefing where Secret Service entered the room to remove the president while the situation was being assessed.

Trump later returned to the room where he was asked by a reporter, “Are you rattled by this at all, Mr. President?”

“Do I seem rattled?” Trump responded. “It’s unfortunate that this is a world, but the world’s always been a dangerous place. . . .

. . . “I feel very safe with Secret Service. They’re fantastic people. They’re the best of the best . . .

“Why did you come back, Mr. President?” the reporter pressed. “What made you decide to come back and continue the briefing?”

“Well, I didn’t even think about not coming back,” Trump responded. “I said, ‘Am I able to go back?’ And they said, ‘You’d have to wait a little while.’ I waited a little while, as you know, in the Oval Office area. And I said, ‘Can I get back now?’ And they said, ‘Yes.’ . . .

Donald Trump Leaves Abruptly During Press Conference After Shooting Outside the White House

President Donald Trump on Monday abruptly left a press conference after what appeared to be a Secret Service agent approached the podium and spoke into his ear.

“Excuse me?” Trump said as the press conference was interrupted.

The president left the podium and the briefing doors were locked after he exited.

After speaking quietly with the Secret Service, the president returned to the briefing room after a few minutes to inform them that there was a shooting of an armed suspect outside the White House.

“There was an actual shooting, someone has been taken to the hospital … seems like the person was shot by Secret Service,” Trump said. He also confirmed that the suspect was armed. . . .

Eh, as one who used to work in one of the government buildings bordering the White House, you get some nut doing something crazy there about once every year or two. If they’re not shooting, they’re trying to run the barricade in a car or are jumping onto the lawn and running around.
That’s why we have the Secret Service.
Most of the time, mental illness seems to be a factor.
Glad no one was hurt other than the shooter.

Edited to add, I see this was at 17th and Pennsylvania. That’s actually a really long distance from the White House proper. This may have been a case of a mentally unwell person just walking around the streets and had nothing to do with Trump.

Yep, high profile people seem to attract this kind of negative attention. Who knows the motive as yet. That it happened when a press conference got started gave it a much higher immediate profile as the President was removed to safety.

Nice to know Mr. Trump’s bodyguards (Secret Service) are on their toes.

Given that several cities including DC have just had major civil unrest/ riots over police officers shooting black people, and that the person shot in this case did not have a gun but just faked having one, yes, it matters a lot.

While the Secret Service agent, unlike a DC cop, probably would not be fired from his work for shooting someone whom he judged was a threat, I’m sure he does not want his family doxxed or another riot to break out.

The police shoot white people regularly too but generally no one marches or riots when that happens.
