One thing that NHS brings to mind is now everyone will be able to afford an abortion, get an abortion, get IVF treatments or some other immoral thing.
Do I really want my funds to go to that?
How does it work in Scotland? Is everything under the sun covered or are some things not covered, Abortions, IVF etc?
Yes - this is a society problem though. It is thought by ‘society’ to be ok. Anyone with health insurance an any country would likely have the same issues?? But, free health care has meant that my severe depression and anxity disorder was treated, my pneumonia was treated, my children were delivered in hispital etc, etc. Also if I had not had treatment, I would have continued to be houseboud, unable to work and would have been caught in a viscious circle unable to afford the help needed to pay for help. Agoraphobia = no job = no money = no help = no possibility of ever getting better = poor parenting = etc. etc.
You can see the predicament I would have been in if not for the NHS. This would have been the same for every person with a debilitating illness. I am all for the NHS. I consider tha abortion problem to be a societal and political problem. Yes the NHS do perform abortions. In the UK you would be hard pressed to find hospitals that don’t. You cannot take away treatment for the ill on the basis that people are having abortions. The abortions will not decrease by that however, the death rate would increase. Aborted babies + untreated people = more deaths.
In any case, tax is not optional. You have to pay it. ‘Give to Ceasar what is Ceasar’s’ . I hardly think the abortion rate is less in the US where healthcare is not free than the abortion rate here.

I don’t want my taxes going for many things I don’t approve of. I’m sure that your insurance payments now are funding abortions. Basically, health insurance is socialized medicine that is not run by the government.
actually no our insurance does not cover ABC, abortions or IVF:thumbsup:

I know someone who passed away in September. He died of cirrhosis of the liver. He literally drank himself to death. The doctors gave him a new liver (still not sure how he got it). He went home and drank some more. Drank until his blood vessels gave out and he had internal bleeding.

He spend his last two weeks in the ICU in pretty much a coma. Died when they tried to move him to another hospital.

His wife owed $350…their deductible. The actual bill was more than a million.

Meanwhile I struggle to keep the bare minimum level of insurance simply so I won’t go bankrupt completely when/if I get into a major accident or get some funky disease/cancer.

It’s such a scam.

There is plenty of data that show Americans are the hardest-working people in the world.

American exceptionalism is a very dangerous an prideful error.

Please see the tag quote from Fr. Neuhaus at the bottom of this message.

Unfortunately, this is typical.

Without reading the whole thread, if the situation is not their fault, and is lifethreatening, yes they should receive health care. Anything else is lacking the compassion we as a Christian nation should have.

Just a little sarcasm to add to the debate:
Only the elite have the right to live and all of the other people that can’t pay for health care should just crawl into a hole and die. Why not just set up mass “euthanasia” centers where all of the poor, from our country and abroad, get lethal injections so that the rest of the elite can relish in all of their stuff. Lets just spend every last dime on war and destruction because it makes more sense. Oh but I forgot the “rapture” is coming anyway so it doesn’t matter anyway.

Sure…why not? Your last attempt went over so well. 😉 😛

Just to add a little sarcasm: If this place is an example of the Catholic font of living waters, I’d rather drink from my dog’s favorite water dispensing device, which happens to serve a duel purpose 👍

As someone else remarked, you are just rude. Light sarcasm for humor is one thing. Insulting everyone is an entirely different matter. There are a lot of good Catholics on this forum. If you don’t find it edifying, there are plenty of other places for you to spend your time, and I’m sure few of us would miss you. 👍

You are pretty rude yourself my friend…

You are a poor witness for your faith by what you have said to me here and I’m not impressed with you or your words. 👍

Gee, that would really hurt…if my purpose was to impress you. 😛

As you would prefer to “drink from your dog’s favorite water dispensing device,” I am just saying that no one here will stop you. 🤷 We are all guests here. You don’t have to converse with us if you don’t like us. This thread is about health care costs and what is moral. It’s not about you, no matter how much you think of yourself.

So, why do you keep attacking me? Why don’t you ignore me?

Answer: Because you are drawn to it like a wasp to a flame.

Test: Now, lets see if you can restrain yourself from answering this post. You pray to God and I will too. It will be good for your soul!

Good point you make there.👍
I agree. American kids (myself included) have been raised with a solely utilitarian purpose. Our value is solely dependant on what we can do…always. Honestly, I have no idea how else to define myself. I do therefore I am. And if you can’t “do” it then you have no value and are not entitled to certain necessities like basic healthcare because you didn’t “do” enough of whatever it was you were supposed to “do”.

This is a very common way of valuing people and it is a real shame for those who cannot ‘do’.

The american health care system has failed me in so many ways I don’t care to even try to count them all.

I am uninsurable in my current state and indeed in most states from my research into the matter. No insurance company will provide me coverage, there is no ‘pool coverage’ in my state. I can afford health insurance, but no one will cover me. Since I make enough to buy private insurance however, medicare/medicaid won’t touch me. I am stuck in a no man’s land, the free market has absolutely no solution for me.

What has this landed me? Yearly kidney stones, appendicitis and multiple chronic congenital medical problems while uninsured. All of these are out of my control, and not due to my lifestyle.

My hospital bills have totaled over 300,000, around TEN years of my income. As a result over 70% of my paycheck goes to paying back medical bills, which of course makes me unable to pay for current medical needs, which means they’re eventually going to require me to go to the ER and rack up another unknown amount of bills. I’m almost thirty and I haven’t even been able to attempt to begin saving for retirement, because I can’t even afford to keep myself healthy, which of course inhibits my job performance.

I’ve already filed for bankruptcy once, that cleared about 150,000 of the medical debt, but I’ve got another 100,000 or so looming over my head again and you can only declare bankruptcy but so often, I have several years before it can occur again.

I’m not ‘broke’ per-say in that I have no income, but I am broke because the medical system in this country is broken.

You certainly have been failed. Maybe that will open a few of the eyes on this forum. You should move to the UK! We are really blessed here.
