Should Catholics be concerned about animals?

I think it could give one a little more appreciation for the meat at their dinner table…😉 except, Jesus went willingly. I hardly expect that the cow did. Although, I understand that when a ‘bushman’ from Africa has to hunt, they will apologize to the animal and explain that it was necessary to feed their family and thank their game and ask for forgiveness. really!😛
Remember that Jesus defeated death. I’ll compare my steak to Jesus when it starts mooing in my freezer.

I would like to point out two things.
  1. I wouldn’t eat any or those things. Well, except maybe the Jack Tripper – but I wouldn’t eat that often. You can probably listen to your arteries harden after you finish that one.
  2. Some of the recipes were, or could be, vegetarian.

  1. Is it possible to hear your arteries harden??? That would save money. You could get to the doctor** before **the heart attack. Well, at least you could drive yourself and save the cost of the ambulence!
  2. Was there any that didn’t have animal products in them??? I couldn’t look at everything. It was making me nauseous.

The fried corn wrapped in corn dog bread could be made without animal products as could the Oreo cupcake.

My understanding is that it is in fact such a losing proposition that many farmers receive government subsidies to support their industry. This is often touted on vegan websites as a reason for the ‘inefficiency’ of raising cattle for food and they cry out to have the subsidies stopped; citing that free enterprise will set the precedence for reform. I do not know first hand. So, I am not qualified to make that call. I do know that I would hate to see anybody lose their lively hood for whatever reason…

I had to look it up!😊
**This has been rather educational for me, Ridgerunner. I have to admit that I like discussing this with you. I offer you my respect.:tiphat: and look forward to more conversation with you.

Bill**

Cow/calf operators receive no subsidies at all. None. Nor do backgrounders or finishers. I don’t know where they got that idea. It’s one of the few truly “free markets” left in agriculture.

Row crop farmers, on the other hand, do get subsidies from the government. The grain and vegetables on your table are subsidized, not the beef. I doubt that pork, lamb or goats are subsidized either, but I don’t know that for a fact.

And people can make money doing it. Aussies and Kiwis have come in and bought up thousands of acres in this area for ranching. (There’s a climatic reason, but it might be boring to hear it.) Do people think the Kiwis and the Aussies come all the way here and buy thousands of acres so they can lose money? I’ll grant that you can lose your socks ranching if you don’t know what you’re doing or don’t work at it. But that’s true of anything unless you work for the government.

Oreos are vegan by the way!😛
No they’re not. Are they? Aren’t you a member of the vegan police? You should know better. Do Oreos have refined processed sugar in them? White processed sugar is not vegan. It is made using bone char (a slaughterhouse product). Though not all processed sugar is made using bone char, most of it is. It is often hard to definitively know if the processed sugar in a product was made with bone char, so most vegans assume that it is and choose products that are sans refined processed sugar.

If you go to WHOLE FOODS they do have vegan Oreos. I think the brand name is Back to Nature. You probably don’t have a WHOLE FOODS in your area.

BTW: a lot of beers and wines are not vegan. They are made with isinglas (I’m probably spelling that wrong). Isinglas is the swim bladders of fish–used to clarify the wine or beer. (Is that gross or what!) They have found all kinds of uses for slaughterhouse scrap and it turns up in more products than people realize. All those long names that you can’t pronounce on the ingredient labels hide a lot of icky secrets.

Well, excuse me Mrs fancy pants!:onpatrol:From one vegan cop to another…Oreos ARE vegan. As a matter of fact, when they discovered they were in competition with “Newman’s Own” they made a concerted effort to prove it! And here is a link to a petition you can sign to make sure they are in the UK!!!

So THERE!😛

Isinglass is present in many beers and ales. But, there happen to be several local microbreweries here in Utah which do not use it. Of course the brews don’t keep very long and they aren’t as clear as commercially brewed beers and ales. This is also 3.2 state, but they have allowed a whopping 4% alcohol to encourage the local market. So no fishy crud in my ale, young lady!

As a matter of fact we have a few whole foods markets here. There is a farmers market every weekend which I shop at sometimes. And I have a pretty good garden. As soon as I finish watering I will post some pictures for you in the group.

Chastise me, will you?

hhmmph!:dts:

I stand corrected, sir!:blushing: It is the dairies. I was wrong.

Actually in Utah I think that everything sold by the Mormon store (sorry I forget it’s name) is organically grown.

**There are LDS ‘Stake Farms’ ( a Stake is a Mormon version of a Diocese) Which distributes foods through the DI (Deseret Industries). DI is sort of their version of St. Vincent De Paul. But, the produce is not for sale. Nor is it generally distributed outside of their church. Except in extreme emergencies such as hurricane Katrina, or if they have such a surplus that it will otherwise spoil they will donate it to the local state food bank. They are very big on the ‘end times scenario’ so they actively encourage stockpiling food to last for several years.(which is probably not really a bad idea!) They distribute it through their ‘Relief Society’, which is sort of their version of Catholic Relief Services. (which will give you food if they have it even if you are not Catholic) You must be in ‘Good Standing’ with your ‘Ward’ (that is their version of a Parish) to receive the assistance. Otherwise you are on your own. I don’t make this stuff up. I live just north of Salt Lake City (their version of the Vatican).

Whether it is organically grown or not, I can’t say. The LDS (Latter Day Saints) have a mechanical view of creation. So it is likely that they don’t think it matters. (To worry excessively about the environment shows a lack of faith in God because God will take care of it.)**

Yeah, my brother is devout LDS. His ex and my nieces live somewhere near there (I forget the name of the town) they live right near BYU.

Yeah, I know about Deseret Industries, sort of like the LDS answer to the Salvation Army. They have a lot of pretty strange ideas, but I’m not here to talk about that stuff. I thought that they had a store besides Deseret that sold stuff as well though.

The DI has very good prices on quality used merchandise. (Hey, just because I’m not LDS doesn’t mean i can’t shop there.😊 It really is a screamin’ deal, I have to admit!)

Since you all are on the subject of food, here’s one of my favorite sites.
Might be a vegetarian recipe or two.😉
My son showed me how to add links. Hope it works.

Paula Deen!!! Now there’s a lady who you know eats her own lardy pies!!! I do like her southern personality though–she’s very pleasant. But she needs to give up the pie and go on a diet.
