That’s it.
The DI has very good prices on quality used merchandise. (Hey, just because I’m not LDS doesn’t mean i can’t shop there.😊 It really is a screamin’ deal, I have to admit!)
Hey, if college taught me anything it’s that cheap, or free, stuff is good stuff.

**Well, excuse me Mrs fancy pants!:onpatrol:From one vegan cop to another…Oreos ARE vegan. As a matter of fact…

What did you call me, Bro? What did you call the Sister? I have to work today–please cover my shift.

I grew up on a farm and there wasn’t one, single, animal on that farm that did not have a job. The cats were for rodent control. If there started to be too many mice, rats, moles, and voles around we stopped putting out cat food until the cats got hungry enough to fix the rodent problem. Dogs were for herding, guarding, and hunting there wasn’t a single dog on the farm that wasn’t trained to accomplish at least two of these tasks. So, while the cattle’s job was to grow big and strong and become a nice roast the dogs job was to ensure this happened by helping keep predators out of the pastures. I think that city people do not realize that farmers have a consistent ethic between their ā€œpetsā€ and their ā€œstockā€. On a farm, every animal (even the people) works for its keep!
City people think peas come from a can.

City people have NO IDEA where their food comes from. They go after and attack ā€œfactory farmsā€, but without high productivity agriculture, those city people would either starve or would have to move back to the country and enter into subsistence farming and spend a month, canning and putting up food for the winter.

:hey_bud:City people think peas come from a can.
:yukonjoe:That is a pretty sarcastic generalization. MY peas come from the back yard! Most of the time…some times they come in a frozen plastic bag. although next year they are going into a shadier spot

:yukonjoe:I will agree that the vast majority take their food supply for granted. It is a sad thing that many of them do not understand the realities of how it is produced. They show their kids little story books with cute farm animals. But, they do not show them the more graghic pictures of how they are led to slaughter and butchered. Even though I am Vegan, I can understand the need for a meat eating individual to either hunt or harvest their own animal just once to experience the harsh reality of the pain and suffering inflicted on the animal.

** :yukonjoe:A lot of the folks which jump on the band wagon, I believe, are genuinely sincere in their desire to see some sort of change,…to belong to a cause,…to feel like they are making a positive difference. MOST of them, I believe, do have some idea of the consequences of attempting to implement these changes. There are sound reasons to ā€œattack factory farmsā€ ( as you put it). There are two dominant schools of thought in this movement. The ā€œWELFARISTā€ approach, and the ā€œABOLITIONISTā€ approach. The ā€œwelfaristsā€ just want to see the animals cared for and treated more humanely, and prevent the waste and bio hazards from escaping into the food and the environment.( To the chagrin of my fellow vegans i do fall more into this category) The ā€œabolitionistsā€ want to see it eliminated all together.**
and spend a month, canning and putting up food for the winter.
** We already do!..But, we also have a bit of land to grow stuff on. Unlike those folks who live in apt. buildings. I feel for those folks. There are programs such as ā€œCommunity Gardensā€ communitygarden.org/** and Local Farmers Markets en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farmers%27_market. And I love to encourage folks to buy as locally as they possibly can and support the farmers in your county and state!

I totally agree with you–the vast majority of city people have*** no idea ***where their food comes from, how it’s made, what’s involved, the processes, ethical considerations, hazards and safety of ingredients, effects on health, etc. And because city folk are buying and eating the stuff and supporting these businesses and industries, they SHOULD know and get involved. I was recently having a conversation with a group of people. One person in the group made her living as a nutritionist. When the conversation turned to food people started to disappear. Too boring of a topic. This nutritionist is battling her child’s school to make changes in the lunch program. Not having much success. Everybody is apathetic. We all need to learn about what we’re eating. The way food is made has changed drastically in the last 50 years. What’s wrong with high fructose corn syrup? What are all those chemicals doing in your food? tiny.cc/dEjOP

Absolutely. Children need to know the truth about meat. Why hid the slaughterhouse photos? They should be right out in the open. Posted on the menu too.

The problem is that we are guilty of overanalysis.

The FDA allows a certain percentage of rat feces and hairs in foods.

Someone once said that ā€œanalysis leads to paralysisā€.

Peanuts have aflatoxin … OMG! YOU CAN GET CANCER FROM EATING PEANUTS!!!

One person sued because they saw a sign warning of asbestos being removed. The mere presence of the sign caused a severe ā€œallergicā€ and neurotic reaction.

Once upon a time, Edith Bunker asked Archie what he wanted for lunch; she had some tongue she could slice up for sandwiches. Arch said, ā€œI don’t want something that came out of the MOUTH OF A COW!!! Just berl me a coupla eggs.ā€

Someone I know reacted violently because of CORN SYRUP. They wanted actual maple syrup … having no idea of how maple syrup is made. All that plastic piping and all that wood burning to boil off the water.

In fact, … if they ever watched their food being prepared in a restaurant, they might quit eating in restaurants.

[Heck … If people had any idea of where their food came from, they would quit eating, entirely.]

[Some German politician said people should never witness the making of policy or sausage.]

Yup… give me a soy latte! And you can keep the chicken, pig, cow and dairy from factory farms too!

This I agree with whole heartedly. If someone is going to eat wild meat they should hunt it themselves – at least once. If someone is going to eat bought meat they should raise and kill a pig or cow just – at least once.

However, modern city life doesn’t really make this possible and more so than a modern city dweller can raise all their vegetables for a year (baring those willing to sacrifice their entire city yard for a garden).

First time I’ve seen an Archie Bunker quote on CAF. šŸ‘

So, I am sitting in this vegan restaraunt. And right there on the menu they show a carrot being pulled out of the ground!:bigyikes: I will never eat another carrot as long as I live. It was so dirty, and it had this long green growth on top.😊
😃

Like I said, check out the local farmers market. It is cheap, fresh, and you are supporting the local economy. And I have grown tomatoes and snap peas on my porch when I was an apt dweller years ago. It can be done!

Visiting the farmers market IS NOT growing your own food. I live in an apartment right now, and I have a window box on my back porch with vegetables in it. Note that I said they could not grow ALL THEIR FOOD FOR A YEAR.

**No. It is not growing your own food. But it is a good source of nutritious food.
What are you growing? Post a picture! šŸ‘
Go to my profile and look at my photos of my garden, if you like.😃

Are you mad at me? Or is it just a symptom of the loss of everyday nuance through the internet?**:nunchuk:

Having lived on a family farm, I’ve seen dogs chained 24/7 in freezing weather and in very hot weather with no shade to keep the predators away (including ducks off of a pond).
The ā€˜predators’ still got the chickens. These were not long haired dogs made for cold weather either.

I’ve been on dozens of family farms and have never seen dogs treated as such. The closest I saw to this was the male breaders being kept in a cage on a farm where they also bread dogs. But that was just so they could control the coupling and ensure that none of the females got impregnated by the wrong breed.
