Should Certain Website Articles NOT Be Cited? And Why?

No, every article should be examined on a case by case basis. There shouldn’t be a wholesale ban on any site.

Nor should there be a wholesale deluge of posts from one site.

There comes a point when we are no longer Catholic Answers, but merely shills for some other site.

That goes for conservative, liberal, and libertarian sites, which this site is flooded with links of all three.

Besides, last time I checked, if someone makes a statement or comments on a news article, the thread is shut down or that poster is flamed for not posting a link.

Elaine's Cross:
  1. We need a newlink for this thread.
  2. lewrockwell is a libertarian site which depends heavily on the writing of Austrian Ludwig von Mises.
  3. It is contingent upon you – since you started that thread and since you quoted those writers – to apply Catholic teaching to their writing – because this is a Catholic board.
  4. I don’t see the need for this thread. It would quite legitimately have been placed as a post on the previous thread.

Yes, there is that danger. There is another danger: that, under the guise of free speech and fair comment, teachings which have nothing to do with Catholicism are subtly foisted off as ‘Catholic’ or at least ‘compatible with Catholicism.’

Even within the purveys of free speech and fair comment, the article would have to relate to Catholicism in some way – even if that way is to oppose it – rather than take an end run around it. There is mention btw on those libertarian sites of a very detailed tract applying Catholicism to libertarianism.

So those who, for instance, believe in ‘always peace and never war’ would need to apply point-by-point the Just War Doctrine and/or the Principle of Double Effect to demonstrate that ‘always peace and never war’ is Catholic or at least compatible with Catholicism. 🙂

I would agree, though it appears that some want to hold LR.C to a higher standard. e.g. I see articles and op-eds from WND regularly posted here and it’s pov is certainly not Catholic and has even carried a variety of anti-catholic op ed pieces.

This is a strawman, at least as relating to LR.C as they firmly believe in Just War, they simply hold that the WoT does not meet the qualifications. In that view they are in agreement with a number of Catholics.

And for those interested in what all the fuss is about, here is a primer on Austrian conomics in their won words. NB - it’s kind of long and some of the terms may be used a little differently than the norm in more widespread current political/social/economic writing.

Should we do the same with the Weekly Standard, National Review, Ann Coulter, etc?
