Should I buy a wii u?

I’m really feeling the itch to play some good old mario and zelda, but I’m concerned that the system will be dead when the ps4 and xbox one come out later this year. Lots of people are calling the wii u the next dreamcast, and 3rd party developers seem to be avoiding the system like the plague. I don’t want to pay $350 for a box that plays 1st party nintendo games, as good as those may be.

…so should I buy or not?
 
Sometimes I buy a console for the sake of playing ONE game (and in the case of my 3DS, it was Ocarina of Time 3D). Later though, more games a developed for that console and some of them you’d probably like a lot and play more (like Animal Crossing for me).

I don’t know if you should buy a WiiU, but if there are enough games there that you’d like to play and you decide that you’re money’s not being wasted (if you have to spend more money on more important things like food, charity, church, family…), then go ahead and get it. Maybe you should wait a little more when it gets dated and maybe the price will drop.
Personally I think it’s not fair that they’re only releasing Wind Waker HD for the WiiU and not the Wii, but I really do want it.

I always go for Nintendo consoles before others because I (as you may have guessed) am a huge Legend of Zelda fan and those can only be played on Nintendo consoles. ;D And Nintendo usually caters towards less morally problematic games (I respect them for NOT allowing the Binding of Isaac to be available on the DS)
 
Maybe you should wait until the PS4 and Xbox1 come out. I’m thinking the PS4 is going to be the new Xbox360, but I may be wrong.

even if the wii u is dead they will still have plenty of games (I would say its practically dead now, Microsoft and sony have blown nintendo out of the water with game counsels. Nintendo was huge in the 90s and early 00s but when xbox360 and PS3 came out nintendo got left in the dust.)

if you must have have old mario and zelda and wii u is the only way to get them go ahead I would say.
 
If you can help it, then NO.

Its not all the beneficial. If you stop playing video games you’ll find more time for hobbies you’ll reallly enjoy, like reading.

However if you really, really, really must buy it and if it is a “major goal” of yours remember: MODERATION, and do not let it interfere with your prayer and time with God.
 
Give the new systems a year or so to break in, then decide which one you want. That’s just me. I never buy brand new tech equipment until it has been tested by plenty of overeager human fodder 😛 Then when all the kinks and bugs are worked out I can make a pick.

I custom built a PC to use for gaming purposes a year back in addition to everything else I use it for, but needless to say that’s more expensive and not everybody gets a nerdy thrill out of looking up, reading about, and ordering individual parts. It’s a great educational experience though.

Why must it be beneficial outside of entertainment? We are meant to enjoy life, and there is nothing inherently wrong with having some time for amusement. I agree with the call to moderation, but I see no wrong in buying a Wii U as long as it isn’t done to the exclusion of other things like charity.

Can the OP not do both? Why must they be mutually exclusive?

I have a Wii U, and it is a very entertaining system. I like that many of the games have a family-oriented theme and there is very little objectionable content that I can find in most Nintendo 1st-party properties.

Honestly, I look at the list of titles coming out for the Xbox One and the PS4, and they are full of bland shooters and driving games. You really should question what is coming out within the launch windows that is all that spectacular.

You seem really put off by Nintendo’s 1st party titles, which were reason enough for me personally to buy it, so if 3rd party is your thing, avoid the Wii U. It’s a great system for the Nintendo properties, but if you’re looking to be convinced by anything else, I’m not sure it’s the system for you.
 
Buy it !! Enjoy it !! No harm, no foul. But the PS 4 will be fantastic !!

I’m curious what about the PS4 interests you? I have one on pre-order myself on Amazon, but that’s mostly because I’m interested in some of the games coming out down the road like Final Fantasy XIV and Destiny. Most of the launch window doesn’t interest me at all 😦
 
I can’t see Nintendo going the way of Sega. I’ve been around long enough to see people predicting the demise of Nintendo for decades. They’ll do just fine. They’ve got lots of games in the pipeline. By this time next year, they’ll have a 2D Mario game, a 3D Mario game, a Zelda HD re-release, Smash Bros., Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country, and lots more. Plus you can still play all the Wii games on it. There will certainly be more than enough content for me to get through.

I fully admit my bias in this area, though. 😛 Microsoft and Sony will never be able to compete with Nintendo in my book. 🙂

What version of history is that? 😛 The late 90s and early 00s were Nintendo’s drought period. The N64 and GameCube did not sell nearly as we’ll as their other systems. And the Wii in the past 7 years has outsold even the original NES and Super NES (not to mention the PS3 and XBox 360). If you are looking at those numbers, Nintendo easily won this past generation.

Before I buy a console, I look for about 2 or 3 games I like from that particular console.
Best you do that before buying it.

You could say this of anything, but we can’t go around telling people not to enjoy themselves. It’s true that they could be spending that time praying, but there’s nothing wrong with enjoying yourself in moderation. 🤷

I would buy the Wii U if I had money for it. I don’t, so I think I’ll be stuck with just the 3DS this time around (which is fine- there are lots of great handheld games). Nothing can compare to Nintendo as far as I’m concerned. They’re fun and relatively innocent at the same time. 🙂

nothing wrong with someone playing video games as long as they don’t do it to much.

let’s keep this discussion to wii u though.

I, too look forward to some of the games that r being released. Many more people will be able to play together on most of the games. I enjoy the war games.

Really, I would look at what type of games you are looking to play and what system they will be on. Nintendo offers more than enough 1st party titles to keep me occupied. I’ve not much interest in anything else (except the Lego games, which were on the Wii and will be on the Wii U), so it’s an easy decision for me. But if you’re looking for other titles, then that’s something to consider. You can’t get Mario and Zelda anywhere else, though.
