You are correct on all counts.

I do appreciate that Nintendo does not often include DLC. I do not believe it ever has on the Wii, now that I think about it.
The thing is, Nintendo NEVER implemented DLC until 3DS/Wii-U. They buckled to the trend. 😦

Miss the days when I could just slap a cartridge into my Genesis and expect a complete game

Yeah, I’m not a big fan of DLC either. They did have some DLC with Animal Crossing on the Wii, though. But that was just a few extra items here and there. That doesn’t bother me so much.

I do find it telling that the DLC levels for the New Super Mario Bros. U are now going to be released as a separate game all its own (New Super Luigi U). That strikes me as typical Nintendo. They cannot help themselves but to be so extensive in their efforts at producing DLC in order to make it ā€œworth itā€ to their customers that they wind up producing a whole extra game. If that’s their approach to DLC, I’ll be happy. šŸ™‚ Nintendo doesn’t usually do things half-way.

I heard you can buy New Super Luigi U as dlc as well. For a cheaper price I think too. So they kept both options open.

I thought the price for both was the same ($29.99). But, yeah, they’ve moved to letting you buy all their new games on disc or digital. I’m still old-fashioned (I still buy CDs rather than mp3s), so I cannot bring myself to go that route. But many seem to prefer it, which is why they are offering it that way.

No. Buy a bicycle. Get a 10 or 12 speed road bike; they can be had for about $100 on popular self-marketing sites. Take the bike to a good bicycle service store and have it overhauled and tuned up. The total coast should come in at less than $350. This is less than you would pay for the console and games.
Cycling will get you out of the house where the air is probably more toxic than LA smog. Cycling is good cardio-vascular exercise and getting out of doors is good for you. Open the door and go out. You’ll never meet people playing a Wii.
Incidentally the name of the video game system is the sound of the manufacturers skipping gleefully to the bank with your hard-earned money.

While the basis for the advice is sound, there’s a couple of flaws here.
  1. Good road bikes are hard to ride, especially if you’re not in lean shape. Buy a hybrid bicycle. They’re meant for roads and park trails, have bigger and more comfortable seats already included, and are generally cheaper to buy than road bikes.
  2. If your local repair shop is charging you $250 for an overhaul, they’re ripping you off. Unless the bike is totally trashed (in which case don’t buy it in the first place), most everything on a bike can be put into good working order for $100-150. Even that’s for something that needs a lot of work.
  3. While you will likely see more people while riding a bike, you’re not actually going to meet many while you’re riding in any sort of meaningful way. No more than an average gamer would meet than say… going to the store to pick up the latest game.
It’s a little numbing to see people consistently suggest that playing video games and having X/Y/Z are antithetical (healthy life, social life, prayer life, etc.). It’s complete nonsense. These are not mutually exclusive activities.

Sincerely,
Gamer/Catholic/(Former) Professional Bicycle Mechanic

I bought a bicycle once.

Afterwards, I realized that I didn’t particularly like cycling. I like running, which is free. I’d have gotten more use out of a game console. The console would have given me more to talk about with new friends, too. I’m not sure how a bicycle could contribute to that. Few people have conversations about riding bicycles, because in general there isn’t very much you can say about it.

Nintendo can have my hard-earned money if they give me what I want in a game. They’re one of the few companies I actually respect.

I’m really feeling the itch to play some good old mario and zelda, but I’m concerned that the system will be dead when the ps4 and xbox one come out later this year. Lots of people are calling the wii u the next dreamcast, and 3rd party developers seem to be avoiding the system like the plague. I don’t want to pay $350 for a box that plays 1st party nintendo games, as good as those may be.

…so should I buy or not?
In my opinion the nintendo games are best! And they are child friendly. Also when nintendo releases more for the wii it will get more popular and before you know it there will be more titles.

Yes, I’ve always been impressed with the way Nintendo conducts business. I recall a few years back when they had a rough financial year, the CEO and some of the upper level executives voluntarily took 50% pay cuts. I don’t see a whole lot of executives in other companies doing that.

There still remains the problem of air quality. If you are playing indoors all the time you are rebreathing stale air. Most houses have too little ventilation. You end up breathing bad air.
Move the gaming center onto the patio or out into the garage if you insist on wasting time with video games.
Running is not really as healthful as some would believe. This is a high impact activity unless it is done correctly. Most runners I have seen are not running with proper technique. If you must run, run on the balls of your feet, not on your heels. No other animal runs on its heels; skeletal structures aren’t designed for it. You need to get your technique right or you will end up needing knee replacement. You’re not too heavy to ride a bicycle, but you are too heavy to run.
Bikes are easy to find at low prices on popular self marketing sites. Put a basket on the bike and go to the grocery. Too much to carry in one trip? Go two or three times a week or more.

But I don’t like cycling. And I’m not too heavy for either- at least I hope not, or else almost everyone is. I’m curious about what you think happened before bikes were invented- did everyone sustain constant knee injuries? I think not.

To be honest I like taking a lot of walks. They give you time to think. Cycling is over too quickly, unless I go farther away from my house than I want to. I guess it’s fun to go fast like that, but it doesn’t help me think the same way. I’m sure it works great for you, and maybe it’s more fun for you to go fast. But my #1 goal in exercise is not health, it is doing something that helps me think, sort through my feelings, and be alone for a while. For that, I prefer simple running and walking. If I want to have fun going faster, I might as well drive over to the ice skating rink and practice jumps. 🤷

Some of us simply like certain activities, regardless of how healthy they are. The OP and I like to play video games. There’s nothing wrong with that, provided we don’t let it get in the way of our relationship with God, and that we also like to do other things.

Simple… How about just buy a used Sony Playstation portable, an 8GB memory stick, put a bunch of mp3 music in there, maybe buy some used games from gamestop and buy yourself a gym membership. MOst gyms have a bike machine, treadmills, weight room and you can just listen to music while training or get on the bike and play psp games… That way you get to: game, exercise and meet people! šŸ‘
I’m thinking of doing this myself…

Almost forgot to add to the list… Prayer and receiving the sacraments…
