I’m limited on cash. What is in the Catechism of the Council of Trent worth owning that isn’t in the modern compendium?

A coherent explanation of pro multis, for one thing.

It’s worth buying and studying for a lifetime.

You can read the entire text of this catechism on-line.

If you’re short on cash I wouldn’t recommend buying it (unless you can get a cheaper used copy). There is nothing of substance in it that is not in the 1994 edition. The emphasis is different – stronger on some doctrines than others. It has a lot of value, as you will see if you read it on-line.

But with limited funds, personally, I would save and spend on other things.

You should definitely get it. A Catechism promulgated by a Sainted Pope (St. Pius V) and overseen by another saint in charge of priestly formation (St. Charles Borromeo) is a good thing just from a credibility standpoint.

Remember, it was written for priests so, there is a wealth of information in it that is valuable as a meditation as well as being informative.

Cardinal Newman thought it was indispensible and then-Card. Ratzinger called it something like the Catechism that is the measure by which all others are judged.

Cardinal Schonborn also recommended it said something to the effect of, “No one is forbidden to read this Catechism because we have the new one. It has some very, very beautiful things in it.”

As a seminarian, I highly recommend it! I do not yet have physical copy of the Catechism, but I do have it on CD-ROM. It is worth owning if you have the money. If not, please do try and find it online because I know that it is available online too.
