Should I continue to watch Star Trek Discovery?

We’re straining the analogy here but if someone can be safely consumed, it is really poison?

There isn’t a political and social message being underhandedly thrown at the audience when people are fighting Romulans or Daleks.
Well, the Original Series portrayed the first interracial kiss between a White man and a Black woman on TV. (Alibi under mind control.) Romulans are analogous to the USSR and the cold war with the tension between the two big powers. Overall, Star Trek has never been apolitical.
I think poison is poison, and should not be consumed in any amount by anyone.
I’d look at it like a steak. When you get a steak, some parts may be burnt, no good to eat. But that doesn’t mean the steak is bad overall. Just cut out the burnt parts when you take it in as food to fuel you. Some steaks will be more or less burnt than others. If the steak gets too burnt that there’s not much worth eating, perhaps you stop ordering that steak. But if there’s an easily managed burnt part, perhaps you’ll be find with it.

That’s how I look at it.

20mg of Oxycodone would be a poisonous, lethal overdose level of that substance to a 6 week old baby.

20mg of Oxycodone would be a godsend to an adult man with severe pain from brain cancer.

“Poison” is a very subjective term… Even rat “poison” - strychnine - can be poison to rats or even humans in high doses, yet a legitimate blood thinning medicine used by doctors at therapeutic dosages.

but because it portrays them without consequence and as normal behavior.
There are also a LOT of other evil acts in all sorts of artistic mediums which don’t show immediate consequences for evil actions carried out by the actors.

I disagree. I think a well formed adult can view or read something that contains objectionable elements and be fine, provided they bear in mind that it’s just entertainment and not a model for behavior. If it’s someone particularly impressionable like a child, perhaps more caution is needed.

That would seem a good reason to avoid them.

If our ultimate goal is to be with God in heaven, why would we allow ourselves to draw entertainment through watching immorality played out?

Why would you do anything besides sit in Church and pray 24/7 if entertainment via watching or consuming things which show immoral actions is wrong?

Is watching a documentary about Hitler and the holocaust wrong?

A fine analogy.
It is a shame there is no way to remove these sinful parts from the television show.

Wouldn’t a show or a book where sin wasn’t depicted ring false? It would hardly be relatable, given that in the real world we encounter sin constantly.

I am sure you will disagree with this as well, but we are all susceptible to being influenced by what we see and hear.

So you only read or watch things that explicitly reinforce Catholicism? Just seems like kind of a fragile, fearful way to go through life. I’m not sure you’re giving yourself enough credit.

You didn’t explicitly say it, but it’s the logical conclusion of your position. If anything with immoral content, even a relatively small amount, can potentially influence you for the worse, it seems like you’d want to avoid anything that wasn’t explicitly Catholic.

There’s a lot of fictional immorality in Shakespeare
There’s tons of really horrific immorality in the Bible too.

Here I’ll give a couple examples:

Judges 19:22-29

"While they were enjoying themselves, the men of the city, a bunch of scoundrels, surrounded the house and beat on the door. They said to the old man who was the owner of the house, “Bring out the man who has come into your house, so that we may get intimate with him.” The man who was the owner of the house went out to them and said, “No, my brothers; do not be so wicked. This man has come into my house; do not commit this terrible crime. Instead, let me bring out my virgin daughter and this man’s concubine. Humiliate them, or do whatever you want; but against him do not commit such a terrible crime.” But the men would not listen to him. So the man seized his concubine and thrust her outside to them. They raped her and abused her all night until morning, and let her go as the sun was coming up.

At the approach of morning the woman came and collapsed at the entrance of the house in which her husband was, and lay there until morning. When her husband rose in the morning and opened the door of the house to start out again on his journey, there was the woman, his concubine, collapsed at the entrance of the house with her hands on the threshold. “Come, let us go,” he said to her, but there was no answer. So the man placed her on a donkey and started out again for home.

On reaching home, he got a knife and took hold of the body of his concubine. He cut her up limb by limb into twelve pieces and sent them throughout the territory of Israel"

Ezekiel 16:26

“You served as a prostitute with the Egyptians, your big-membered neighbors, and multiplied your prostitutions to provoke me.”

Sirach 26:25 (NABRE):

“A headstrong wife is regarded as a b1tch, but the one with a sense of shame fears the Lord.”

Wow - the Bible recounting a gang rape and murder and dismemberment of a woman, a woman having sex with large phallused men, and saying a headstrong wife is seen as a bee eye tee see h… Pretty immoral stuff.

Should we stop reading Scripture?
