I have a friend for whom I’ve had feelings for quite some time. Last month, I subtly asked her out, but she told me she was busy. I backed off after that, but about a week later she passed me in the university library and dropped a note on my table that said “I hope we can still be friends”. We talked that night and I didn’t mention the note or what happened earlier. Later that week she asked me if I wanted to go to a movie, so I said sure and asked if she wanted to get food beforehand. She hesitated and said sure, but that “it’s a friends thing, not a date”. I was kind of taken aback, so I brought up the note and she said she thought I was mad at her for saying she was busy earlier and that she just likes being friends. I didn’t want to make an issue so I said that’s fine. We went out as planned and it was fun. Since then, we hang out almost everyday, text all the time, etc. Our friends keep saying we should date, and I mean, we act like we do, we get along perfectly, and I just don’t understand it.
Basically, I thought maybe she’d change her mind someday, but I can’t see it happening. As I said, we act like we’re dating, but for whatever reason, she won’t go for it. Lately I’ve been thinking about cutting off contact with her. It’s a weird situation that’s just getting me to feel depressed and hopeless. It will hurt to lose her as a friend, but going on like this hurts even more. What are your thoughts?
