Over the years, I have had a very strange relationship with my sister in law.
I am aware that she has a problem with me. She sends me not to subtle demonstrations of this at every time I am in her company.
She neglects to say good bye to me when she visits my house, she hugs and kisses everyone else.
She addresses Christmas cards to my husband only.
She slammed a car door on me at our last visit to her son’s house. The look on her face was so angry when she did it, I was actually frightened.
A very personal item was stolen on one of her visits. These are just a small sample of her behaviors.
Frankly, I don’t see why I have to have anything to do with someone this crazy. I am tired of trying to be polite to her when I know that she has singled me out as someone she needs to bully.
I just don’t see that allowing her to continue this behavior helps keep peace(I certainly don’t feel peaceful) or is charitable towards her since it allows her to continue unchecked. I just think It would be far better not to have any contact with her because I cannot change her bulling, gossiping and threatening behavior.
My husband is very unconfrontational and confides that he doesn’t like her but that he feels he has to put up with her because she is his half-sister. Thank God she lives two states away.
I don’t want to make the decision to cut her off, lightly, I would rather we could work it out but I can’t take the bulling anymore. When she complains about other people she hates, I have tried to talk about my Catholic views about things like praying for people who we don’t get on with, avoiding gossip etc. These are all met with sarcastic remarks like “who has time to pray” and I am left with the impression that I (and my Catholic views) don’t know anything. I am always praying for her. The only thing keeping me from cutting her off (but still keeping her in my prayers) is that I think it may be uncharitable can someone give we some insight into what would be the Holy thing to do in this situation?
