Dear Alex,

I am glad to hear that as a teenage boy, you are seriously considering birth control and its use in your future. That is, I hope to say that you are considering it for your future and not engaging in sex now. More important than the use of contraceptives is the issue of premarital sex. Too many people consider that if they use birth control during sex that it is okay to have pre-marital sex ( if they prevent pregancy) I personally do not see using contraceptives as wrong, it depends on the type of contraceptive. Some contraceptives prevent pregancy while others abort pregnancy. If someone uses a method that prevents pregancy eg rhythm method or a method that prevents the sperm from reaching an unfertilized egg, then no murder has occurred. If on the other hand one uses a method eg morning after pill that has the potential to abort a fertilized egg then that is wrong. You can check for information on the various types of birth control by visiting your local health centre. Make sure you get the facts before you make any decision. But most importantly make sure that you commit yourself wholeheartedly to God and following His will for your life, especially when it comes to dating. Pray a lot and don’t just be led by your emotions. You are a young person and you have a long life ahead of you.
Hope you have a great day!

The advise here would not be that of Catholic teaching. I would suggest that a great resource would be John Paul II Theology of the Body.

There is a free download of Christopher West’s tapes here

This is a big step you are considering. I would suggest you discern it carefully before taking any actions.

Alex your’e still young and there will be plenty of time to date. When do you want to convert and go through RCIA I’m sure you will meet others there who are your age as well as at college if you so choose to do so. For now I would focus on digging more into the faith if you plan on converting and the rest tends to work itself out. I to was discouraged because any Catholic young men I met either thought way too highly of themselves or were just awkward and couldn’t socialize so I was interested in them to a very little degree. Fast forward to this summer I met a Catholic guy who fits what I have been looking for, but he is a friend for now since I’m not ready to date and wan’t to use my time wisely to dig deeper into the faith. Like I said use this time to grow and dig into your faith and it really all will fall into place.

Thanks for the advice Clab and your right listening to your emotions is not always a good idea lol. Its something i struggle with because i’m a little bit of an idealist :D. My thoughts on birth control are pretty much its not your place to decide who comes into this world and its not your place to decide who leaves it so just leave it to God (which i’m pretty sure are in line with Catholic teaching) so no birth control for me. Waiting until Marrage will be something ill have a harder time doing but im trying to quit m&p so i guess im going in the right direction. Plus i’m still a virgin so that’s good.

Thanks for the suggestions Mikeodial to be honest i was going to read John Paul II Theology of the Body a while ago but i put it off because i’m a procrastinator and never got around to it :o

Your right glamourdollxoxo patience is definitely something i need to work on lol. My last relationship started out by me thinking i might as well try dating her, then i ended up really falling for her, and by the end i just felt hurt by a one sided relationship and that i had just wasted over a year of my life. Of course, it wasn’t really a wasted effort because i’ve learned a lot and became a lot more comfortable with who i am. Ironically i’m actually more set on not using birth control than i was in the beginning because of way things worked out lol. I would be lying though if i blamed the relationship failing completely on her because i know i did some stupid things too 🙂 and i hope we will be able to salvage a friendship in the end.
High five on liking a friend though my crush is one of my friends too 😃 Her family is actually what got me interested in Catholicism in first place because i studied it in the attempt to convert her sister (shes in my grade) and i ended up converting myself in the process. Here i am four years later still on Catholic answers:eek: …:D. Ironically my crush was the last one of my friends to know i was wanting to convert to Catholicism because when i first told her she didn’t believe me 🤷. Anyways i have a long history with her so i would be really happy if we could get together some time in the future.
I would like to start Rcia as soon as possible but right now i would settle if i could just go to a Catholic church some. My mom already knows everything and is at least trying to be supportive. My mom has actually became my best friend and she is the one person in my family i am actually close to. My dad won’t be as accepting and will probably get quiet upset about it. I’m waiting to tell him about it because his mom’s health is not good right now and he doesn’t need the added stress. So hopefully my grandmother’s health will recover soon and i will be able to attend mass for the first time soon. (Obviously my grandmother’s health comes first) I’ve watched them on tv but ive never got to see one in person. Please pray for her.

I have two (female) friends who dated/married Catholic spouses, and ended up converting. All children are being raised Catholic. This happened over time, not “oh, my husband is Catholic, now I’m going to be, too”

Know that if you are dating a Christian non-Catholic there is less of a chance that she is in a denomination where it is imperative to their church they stay in that denomination. For example, I am converting from the Episcopalian church. The questions I was asked by the priest when getting married were “Has he been baptized?” and “have either of you been married before?” not “Is he Episcopalian, and are you going to raise your children Episcopalian” He did mention, of course that any children born would be raised in the Christian faith, but there was no denomination stipulation.

What I am trying to say is that non-Catholic Christians are sometimes more flexible than you would be able to be. I wouldn’t count them out, if you think you would like to broaden your circle. To be frank, many women would probably be drawn to your commitment to your faith.

It depends on whether or not you can have a relationship without feeling the need to “control” or impose your religious beliefs on your partner.

Many people cannot avoid this. And if you read many threads you will see overwhelming concern from some posters about everyone on Earth’s problems / sins, except their own.

My wife is Protestant and I have zero problems with her faith. In fact, I enjoy attending her services when I have time although I cannot take communion there. She also attends Mass from time to time.

Good luck.

i wanted to offer my own story.

I do encourage responses back because i was not raised catholic and i am interested in hearing what other people have to say .

I am dating a filippino roman catholic right now.
I was raised baptist/protestant and i am attending church now.
However the church was born from the christian movement in China.
Many of the attendants there are chinese and there service is different from what i grew up in. If you look into the christian movement in China, the missionaries there, catholic and protestant had to work together in order to be successful at getting God’s word out.

The people are incredibly enthusiastic and love Christ.

my boyfriend and bestfriend has a fire for his faith that was given to him probably because of the way he grew up in the philipines and his parents.
So we are both very passionate about our faith and have been talking about marraige.

I do not want to raise a family in two different churches and i want to agree on doctrine, but of course this is easier said than done.
We are continuing to talk about faith with one another in hopes that it motivates us to explore our faiths deeper. I am hoping that perhaps one day the rift that we feel between our faiths will be mended.

Hey Jpink1019. Since i’m the only the Catholic in a Baptist family (i plan on starting Rcia classes as soon as possible) i wanted to give you my perspective. We (Catholics and Baptists) both believe in the Trinity, Jesus’s death and resurrection for our sins, God’s love for us, and many other different and important things. Unfortunately we (Catholics and Baptists) disagree on a lot of important things which can cause a lot of conflicts in the future. It all depends on the couple (and God’s will of course) whether it works or not.
I guess the main questions are
Do you think this person is close to God?
Do you think God is calling you to be with this person?
Will this person bring you closer to God?
Will you be comfortable with raising kids in the environment being with that person will create?
If you answered yes to all these questions i say give it a shot and i hope everything goes well 😃 just pray and have faith.
