Hello, is there any problem with reading the Harry Potter books? i Am not concerned that it will affect my Faith because I know it is purely fiction. but I just Fear that it might Cause other people to learn about wicca, witchcraft and stuff like that, and they might even start practicing it.

what do u guys think?

There’s nothing wrong with Harry Potter. As you say, they’re fiction.

Edited to add - if you search for it, there have been so many threads on this topic before. You can have a read and see what you think. But there isn’t really an agreed opinion, you’ll see all different viewpoints.

Perhaps you should spend your time reading the saints instead of Harry Potter.

The Harry Potter books aren’t about wicca, so there’s no danger of people learning about wicca from them. The “magic” in them is completely made up.

What they are about, is friendship, loyalty, trust, and doing the right thing even when that’s the hardest thing to do.

There’s some pretty overt Christian themes throughout the books, particularly in the last one

Don’t bother if you’re over 13. That’s kiddie stuff, yo.

I read them as an adult and like them. I am encouraging my daughters to read them. They are great books, with some important themes like friendship, loyalty, doing the right thing, standing up to evil, strong female characters, etc. Yes it’s about a magical world, but kids will understand it’s fantasy. There is nothing Wiccan about it. If you haven’t already read them, you should also read CS Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia. Another magical world, but with obvious Christian themes.

I disagree - I enjoyed it well into my teen years. Reading it as a teen is different from reading it as a kid but still fun.

Happy Birthday btw, I know you’re in a different continent so I don’t know if you can see your cake, but I can 🙂

I look forward to reading the posts on this thread, because I’ve never understood what it is about the Harry Potter books that gets people to hold such strong views about them. My impression is that they’re well-crafted, entertaining children’s books, and that’s all. Since I’m no longer a child myself, they’re of no interest to me as a reader. I once bought one of them for my grandson, and I read a few pages of it, but it didn’t hold my attention for any longer than that. Maybe this thread will solve the mystery for me.

I started on the first one and didn’t think it was particularly well written. I suggest these as more worthy of your time; most of them I first read when I was in my 30’s and they’re excellent reads:
Tolkien: The Lord of the Rings trilogy
C. S. Lewis: The Space Trilogy, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Great Divorce, The Screwtape Letters, Till We Have Faces
Walker Percy: Lost in the Cosmos

Hey now I’m 26 and still re-read them occasionally lol

“And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver.”
Acts19:19

Because reading story books about an alternate universe where some people have special powers is totally the same as actually attempting to practice real witchcraft.

Same! And I know people in my parents generation who still re read them as well. The first one was a kids book, but by the last one it’s not really a kids book anymore. That was a cool part of growing up reading them.

This is a question you should ask your parents, not strangers on the internet. Talk to your parents about the books you want to read and movies you want to see.

You reading HP books are not the cause of other people learning about witchcraft.

This sounds scrupulous to me.

I like books which build worlds I can immerse myself in. I find the Harry Potter world to be charming. I get to see concepts such as family and friendships and how they apply to this made-up world.
