Should I strive to overcome homophobia?

Sexual attraction is not behavior and therefore those who are attracted to the same sex are not any more evil than anyone else. Hating people because they are homosexual or for any other reason is a common pastime, but that doesn’t make it right. Defend it with all the pretty words you like, but hatred towards others is hatred towards others.
What I am against is the kind of unclear analysis that is going on in this post of yours.

You are right. Sexual attraction is, in itself, not a behavior, it is an emotional precursor that may or may not lead to a behavior.

I am claiming that people have all kinds of emotional precursors to all manners of behavior and that is, in fact, a very human thing.

I am also claiming that people should not be judged based upon emotional precursors precisely because most people’s emotional lives are such a mess. This mess is due to a lack of ordering by right judgement, by reasoning towards justifiable ends.

I am claiming that people should not be judged because we are all susceptible to and taken in by emotional precursors to behavior.

I am claiming that behaviors can and should be judged because behaviors cause harm to others. Emotional precursors do not cause harm to others unless and until they are acted upon.

My position has nothing to do with hate. That is an emotional precursor that I understand to be potentially harmful to others.

You have an emotional precursor that is set to accepting homosexual behavior as legitimate. Your predilection concerning homosexual behavior is causing you, in fact, to “hate” or take an aggressive tone towards my view. Why is your hate, in this regard, a legitimate one? In fact, your emotional stance is exactly what prevented you from looking at and reading my analysis with due care. The hate charge can be rendered in both directions and only serves to inflame the issue. Which is, it seems, what you are attempting to do by charging me with hate.

That is NOT what this is about.

This may also be a major contributor to why people do not want to pursue ethical thinking to its appropriate end. Even if their own moral senses tell them some action is wrong, the unwillingness to appear “holier than thou” and, perhaps, even the accusations of it may be dissuasive to right moral thinking. Think about who launches the “holier than thou” accusation. It is usually someone with a moral agenda of some kind, typically in opposition to the one stated.

That is why I think the OP was quite careful about saying these were his authentic moral “feelings” and did not want to portray them as anything else.

This is an untenable moral position because it presumes to “lump in” homosexuality as a legitimate moral behavior. Let’s apply this thinking, as you say, to “any group.”

"Before you make a generalization about any group - sex addicts, murderers, thieves, child abusers, pimps, stamp collectors, politicians, lawyers…put yourself in that sentence. Think about how you would feel if others were to marginalize one of these groups if you belonged to it.

The problem with this argument is that it presumes that your presence in the group is going to nullify your moral feelings about the kind of behavior undertaken by the group, the moral rightness of that behavior and any truthful conclusions you could arrive at as a member.

I understand this is a difficult point to understand, but just my membership in a group is not what legitimizes that group. That should not be the basis upon which anything is justified morally. My being a pimp does not make pimping legitimate. To argue that others don’t know what it’s like to be a pimp and therefore they should be more tolerant of the pursuit is an appeal to egoism. Your claim is that one must have their ego embrace the behavior before they have any right to make a judgement about the behaviour. The snake, in other words, was right, Eve had to taste the fruit before she really understood the full moral implications of the act. No one else, not even God presumably, would have a right to judge her action until they, too, took a bite.

So far, the argument against the opening post has been an appeal to emotion and nothing but. Here’s how it breaks down

Qoeleth stated he has certain feelings about homosexual behavior (disgust, repulsion, etc) that he is naturally inclined to have.

Others have raised grave concern about his natural inclination of being repulsed by homosexual behavior because there do exist in the world certain individuals who have certain feelings or inclinations, attractions really, towards others of their same sex.

So, the claim is that Qoeleth is wrong because he has certain natural feelings, but that he should abandon these because others have certain other feelings, also apparently “natural,” they they should be allowed to follow. For some undisclosed reason their feelings should trump his feelings. The question Qoeleth is asking, and quite legitimately so, is why should their feelings take precedence over his? It would seem unfair to legitimize some feelings and not others, no?

More importantly, he is asking why should those particular feelings (same sex attractions) be legitimized when people are inclined to have all kinds of “feelings” about things that lead to morally questionable practices. Feelings or attractions are not the best indicators of right conduct precisely because they lead, frequently without thought or reason, to nasty consequences.

The ultimate moral question in dispute here is, “Why should these feelings of same sex attraction be legitimized when many ostensibly equal and even more commonly experienced feelings are not?”

Most people are inclined to have feelings of anger or hate towards others and most of us have been in “this group” many times in our lives. Why is it not legitimate to give into these feelings and carry out what we are feeling? It would appear that “just feeling” something is not sufficient to give a mode of behavior moral approval, nor should it be when it comes to feelings of same sex attraction. Yet that would seem to be the only point being made in support of the position.

Aristotle had it fundamentally right when he claimed that emotions should be ordered to properly reasoned ends. It seems to me that Queleth has properly ordered emotions because they are in line with the appropriate ends of sexual capacity. Others are arguing he should disorder his emotions and align them instead to an embrace of same sex attraction because of (unsubstantiated) claims that no proper ends exist when it comes to sex. This group, fundamentally, is proposing that sex has no purpose except to be gratified. These people need to read Nichomachean Ethics to gain a different perspective, one not grounded on impulse.

I am still waiting for someone to properly address the amorous alien problem in post #18 and explain why sexual relations with this alien would be any more wrong than with another person of the same sex?

It is quite clear what your posts are about.

It is quite clear what your posts are about.
Then show that with a reasonable rebuttal instead of a biased view about me and why I think as I do.

Admit that you have “written off” my view, not based on reason, but instead, because of an entrenched commitment to your own view that emotion and not good judgement is the final arbitrator when it comes to decisions about moral matters.

I am so happy that you and some others feel the need to analyze my “emotional precursor’s” from a heterosexual standpoint. I got one for ya… Mind your own buisness about peoples private life / sex life.👍

I have written off your view. Happy?

And you still know NOTHING about mine, except for what you’ve made up in your own head

Minding their own business would leave a lot of people bereft, with no one to place underneath them in their hierarchy of righteousness.

Even I was in college, and was friends with several gay people, and was ardently supportive of the gay rights cause (this was almost 20 years ago, before it was a popular cause), I recognized that the term “homophobic” was inaccurate and ridiculous. I used the term “homoloathic” instead. Now, without any gay friends that I know of, and having done a complete turnaround on my beliefs about homosexuality and marriage legalities etc… I stand by that term.

OP, you are not homophobic, but you sound homoloathic. That is a problem of charity, which is a virtue. We are called to love all people, just as Jesus loves all people. You don’t have to enjoy being around the company of people who behave in ways that annoy you, and you don’t have to seek to become friends with people whose behavior you object to. But you would be best to pray for an increase in charity in yourself, when you find yourself having negative feelings about the people themselves. It is hard to think charitably about people who are fighting on the opposite side of a battle as you. But it is what we are called to do. Perhaps it would help to try to remember that even these people who rub you the wrong way, do have good and admirable qualities. Or maybe it would help to feel compassion towards them, who might very well have experienced some bad things in their lives. Or maybe just compassion for them, knowing that if they were to suddenly start following the church’s rules for them, they would be carrying a very heavy cross. Maybe when you are tempted to think badly of someone, you can offer a quick prayer for them. Keep up the good fight, but love the sinner.

Spend a little time imagining what it would be like to spend your entire life trying to hide the fact that you are heterosexual.
What a strange analogy coming from a Catholic. What is the equivalence between “hiding” some desire that is not ordered correctly and a desire that is ordered correctly?

It wasn’t made a public matter by me. I am not the one who began parading it on the streets, mandating it in public education, drumming up support and speaking in glowing terms about it on talk shows. I have news for you: It has gone public, so it is no longer a “private concern.” If it were, advocates would not be trying to legitimize it and make it of public concern.

That is my justification for publicly providing an alternative ethical view point. It has become a public ethical matter and therefore requires public ethical justification, not merely personal assent.

Why are you trying to convince me that it isn’t any of my business if it were not a “public” issue? Why are you even getting involved if you really think it is a private matter? To be consistent with your POV you should simply mutter to yourself, “This is not in the least any of my business because I am convinced it is a private matter, so I’ll keep MY thoughts to MYSELF!” At least pretend to be self-consistent instead of denying your own position by posting here.

Of course this a facile point considering it is made from an ostensibly higher moral POV than the one you wouldn’t stoop so low as to even consider.

This is what makes me sick… I totally reject that as a Gay man that I or my desires are not ordered correctly. They are ordered exactly the way they were intended to be. This is the #1 way that people “try” to put down gays and lesbians. Try a new argument, this is getting old. It basically says that you are better than us.

If it smells like garbage, it is garbage… peoples sex lifes should be private matters, however when attacks are hurled againt my “disordered” way of thinking, I will fight back with every once of my being… just sayin 😃

It is not pejorative. It is describing a moral truth. That you do not like that particular truth does not make it offensive. You characterize the entire debate with your comment.

The discussion cannot even take place because you will immediately see every defense of moral truth as an insult even when no such offense was intended or even exists.

Yeppers… and there lies the problem

Oh, and I’m deeply offended that the Church has the gall to suggest that my sexual involvement with women to whom I am not married is objectively disordered.

It’s entirely ordered, because it’s just my following the inclination I was born with to have sex with as many attractive partners as possible. Indeed, there is strong evidence that it is an evolutionary imperative. How dare the old white men in the Church try to deny me the enjoyment and love that I have come to rely upon.

No more forniphobia or aduteraphobia!

The poster used non inflammatory language. It was didactic, academic, dispassionate and yet you still react with emotion.
