i am 19 years old, for the past 4 years i have had a struggle with pornography and masturbation. It seems that 99% of the time, i am not tempted at all to engage in these activities. 99% of the time, i am generous, loving, caring individual. Then that 1%, there is this overwhelming drive to commit these sins, the more i repress them and try to move on the harder it is to do anything else but to think of these sins, then finally, i give in… hoping that will make things better, but it only makes things worse. I know then that i have failed my girlfriend (in my preparation to be a good husband to her) and i have failed God (in my preparation to follow his will).

My girlfriend and I are planning on getting married sometime in the future. I’ve told here every thought that has ever crossed my mind, even when i knew it wouldnt be a good idea. I cant lie to her. I tell her that there is this one sin that is holding me back. Should i tell her explicitly what that sin is?

Sometimes i think i see the good in it, other times, i feel like there is no way that could help anything…thanks for your advice

I think the main thing you’re saying is that you’re a normal healthy young man striving for chastity in a new world where tempations against it are readily available that didn’t even exist 40 years ago when I was your age.

Do the best you can. The idea is to get up once you fall.

However, I don’t think any purpose would be served by telling your girlfriend right now. That might be crossing boundaries that would not be appropriate at this phase of your relationship.

Should, in God’s time, you marry her, you will doubtless be too busy to to be able to surf the net for titillations.

This poster says it best. I’m 29, and while porn has never been a temptation of mine, many other things have.

I’ve been sober from my addiction since Feb 14th, and what helps me more than anything is to simply avoid the situation. Use pornography blockers and only give a good friend the password. You can get some pretty cheap.

But remember what the quoted poster said. Your a normal man, and we should be known for rising when we fall, not the fall itself.

Are you adults or kids? If you are kids (let’s say under 21), I’d not tell her. If you are adults and are seriously discerning marriage, then, she needs to know about this sinful habit.

Sorry for your struggle, but it seems like you are trying so just pray and you will be fine. For your question, I do think you should tell your girlfriend, so that she is aware of what your sin is, since you have already told her there is a sin holding you back. You mine as well tell her. I am sure she will understand. It’s always good to be open and honest with someone you love, especially if it is something that you are struggling with. She could help you a lot. Hope I helped 🙂

This thread is going to quickly diverge into two related but separate discussions. The first is the usual advice about how to break the habit, and the second is whether you should tell your girlfriend.

I’ll start with the first, because it comes up a lot more often and I can say it quickly. There is no quick fix. You have compromised your free will and fallen – more literally than people outside your addiction can understand – into a true slavery of sin. Breaking free of the sin will require every ounce of power within you, but even that will not be enough. You will also need grace – lots of it. Unless you are very, very fortunate, it will be a long, slow process, with improvement almost imperceptible until suddenly things are different. Go to confession often - I suggest no less than once every two weeks, no more than twice a week - receive communion as often as you are able, and pray every night, rain or shine, for freedom. Then gird yourself for battle, because even with God on your side it’s not going to be easy and you will lose quite often for quite a while.

Personally, I don’t think that most of the other tools offered to help break the porn/masturbation habit are useful. Someone suggested porn filters. They’re impressive pieces of software, and can usually block around 95% of online porn. Now, that sounds impressive, but actually that remaining 5% makes the filter useless. You know what it’s like in the throes of the sin: you want it, and you will go to considerable efforts to find it. Eventually, you’ll succeed, and then you’re right back at square one. The only thing I think porn filters give is a false sense of security, and, despite the best intentions behind them, that makes them a hindrance, best discarded. Perhaps someone else has had a better experience with them. I dunno.

Now, second, we come to your actual question. Should you tell your girlfriend?

No, it’s not something to bring up directly. She’s 19; you’re 19. You’re not getting married for at least a few years yet. Presumably you’re not seriously discussing a proposal at this young age, either. Telling her at this point can accomplish no good, and it can bring about quite a bit of evil.

After all, you’d be putting her in a terrible position. If your girlfriend told you that she struggled with chastity, would that make your struggle more or less difficult? (Answer: more.) Why should it be any different for her? (Answer: it isn’t. Girls are sexual beings too, and they also struggle with chastity quite a bit in this perverse era. Don’t make it harder for them.)

You’d also be putting yourself in a terrible position – I am certain there’s a part of you deep down that wants to share this with her, and not for spiritual reasons. It’s that very same part of you that wants to find new methods of titilation and is willing to lie to the rest of you to find them. Listen to that voice, identify what it’s saying, and then do the opposite.

You’d be putting the both of you in a terrible position. This is my weakest objection, but it still bears mentioning: talking about this sort of the thing is the first step in breaking down the barriers that allow really excellent, devout, Catholic couples to fall into fornication. It probably won’t happen here, but why take the risk?

Most significantly… you just don’t need to be talking about your sex lives with one another. Sexuality in general, especially in its relation to Church teaching, would certainly be a good conversation topic at this point, but anything too specific is simply not appropriate for two people who are so far away from making any vows with one another. Talking about your sexuality with someone else pulls that person in to your innermost being – and vice versa. Unless there’s a corresponding commitment there, a commitment that legitimates such deep, private sharing – or, as here, you’re talking to other people who share the same struggles and can help you – all you’re doing is inviting that other person to gawk. I’m sure you really do love each other, and very possibly will end up married… but you’re just not at a commitment level yet where it is possible to do anything but gawk. However much you care about each other emotionally, even spiritually, it would be harmful.

Consider it again when you are on the verge of proposing marriage. Hopefully, by then, you will be able to talk about your struggles in the past tense instead of the present. By then, you will be at a point where the sharing transcends gawking into something deeper.

Having said all this, at the same time, yes, there are things she should know. Yes, you are failing her – betraying her, really – every time you succumb to this sin. Yes, there is something that is holding you back in your relationship with her. She should know that (1) you struggle with some persistent sins, (2) that you believe your failures are holding you back from a fully fruitful relationship with her, and (3) that you don’t want to talk more specifically than that. That is all she needs to know, and it is all that’s healthy to share with her. If you are serious about each other, she will respect the boundaries you’re setting around yourself. There is also nothing wrong with speaking authoritatively in conversation with her on topics like the slavery of sin, the difficulty of grace, feelings of despair and desolation, the importance of confession, the dangers of addiction, or the fact that porn and masturbation are deeply unhealthy and addictive. If they come up, it’s okay to share what you know from experience - just don’t share the experiences themselves.

Oh, and, yes, as soon as she hears “persistent sin” and notices that (gasp!) she’s dating a 19-year-old American man raised since the outbreak of the 20th Century (shocking!), she will very likely figure out exactly what that sin is. If she doesn’t figure it out from that, undoubtedly she’ll catch on when she remarks that she doesn’t see the problem with male masturbation and you reply that all masturbators feel feelings of deep isolation and cut-off-ness from the world, from God, from their loved ones, and from any notion of authentic love. That’s okay. It’s alright if she figures it out, and if she asks any direct questions, there’s no need to lie. Just answer that you don’t feel it would be healthy to discuss it right now. There is a world of difference between figuring out your significant other’s challenges through oblique references and sitting down one night and talking about how you jerk off to naked women on the internet. The first is healthy; the second, even if phrased less crassly, is an inherently crass conversation to have at this stage, and it can only damage the two of you and your relationship.

I hope this advice is useful. I waged this same debate with myself when I was 19 last year, so I’m feel like I’m talking to myself here.

Find a spiritual director and talk it over with him or her. You need to understand
yourself first. Sometimes these things resolve themselves without ever having to
relate these problems to the significant other. Sitting in front of the Blessed Sacrament is a great idea too. We are all wounded in some way and personal boundaries are so precious.
Don’t treat yourself like a dog. Peace.

From someone who is in the exact same position as you, I would say absolutely tell you girlfriend about it. I tell my GF about every time I mess up and I think it has furthered our relationship. She can tell me anything and I can tell her anything. We are instructed to confess our sins to one another (obviously, only a priest may grant forgiveness) and if you can’t share your failings with the person you hope to devote your life to, who can you?

Besides, she might be able to give you that little bit of extra support that helps. I call my GF (long-distance relationship at the moment) whenever I’m in that 1% of the time and it helps. If I screw up again, I still call her and she helps me get out of that “funk” or guilt that only makes the problem worse.

I am an older guy, so perhaps I have no business opining on this subject to a young person.

I say you don’t tell her. Do you tell her all your other sins? Would it serve any useful purpose to do that? Perhaps I am too old-fashioned, but it has been my feeling that people certainly may burden their confessors with their sins. They may burden Jesus with them. After all, He knows them and died to redeem you, so it’s part of His purpose to hear of your pains and your failings.

But (and again, I’m feeling superannuated in saying this) in my opinion a man brings certain things into a relationship. One of those things is steadiness. I realize it’s the fashion now to tell me to “share their feelings” with their wife or girlfriend or whatever. And, I think that is often a good thing. But as a man, I have felt it was my duty always to be steady; to be reliable; to not put fears into the head of my wife or my children; to present as good a model as I can. It is my duty to conquer the darker side of myself, not to unload it on someone else.

Would you feel better to tell her this? Would she? I suspect you might feel better in the moment. I doubt very much that she would. Do you really think women know nothing of masturbation? I think I can reasonably assure you that many, if not most, have similar problems, though I don’t think they are much into pornography. If she were to tell you she looks up male pornography on the internet, would that somehow facilitate your relationship, or would it make you wonder about her suitability as a wife? And, if the latter, would you be right in assuming it, or would you react against the ugliness of it and perhaps judge her too harshly?

Again, I think you have to ask yourself whether telling her would be doing her a favor somehow, or whether it’s simply self-indulgent on your part. I would not be quick to assume the latter is not the case.

wowbagger said a mouthful, which I agree with. Don’t tell her yet. I’m old enough to be your dad, for what it’s worth.

Will you two be getting married soon? Doubtful. What if you break up, which is a real possibility for this stage of the relationship. You don’t want that kind of info about you to make its way around town, and it most certainly will.

What drives you to the masturbation and porn? At nineteen, a sound, level-headed spiritual director’s objectivity is most essential for you. As you get older and work through the issues that drive you to this sin, you’ll develop strength and insight, even wisdom. When you are married, I believe that the loneliness and isolation that gives rise to this behavior will go away.

However, the more you watch, the more perverted your perception of what a wife is in and out of bed will become, as will your expectations of her. Porn is billed as ‘adult’ entertainment. There is nothing adult about it. It is the most puerile, juvenile fantasies acted out on video. To quote Dr. Scott Hahn, it’s presweetened arsenic. Women are much more complex emotionally than the one-dimensionality portrayed in porn. The act of lovemaking is never shown, only animal-like intercourse, etc.

Women want intimacy in a thousand different ways, and these movies short-circuit men’s ability to perceive and respond to those needs in their wives. You need to stop it NOW, for your sake, for the sake of the woman who promises her love and fidelity to you, for your spiritual and emotional health, as well as that of your marriage. Many, many married couples, when going through the inevitable rough waters, when sex becomes routine or intermittent start to replay those tapes in their heads. The less you put in there and the more time you put between yourself and the past, the easier it’s going to be.

Perhaps when you are married, if there arises difficulties from these experiences, you may need to share with her whence these problems have come, in order to enlist her support and understanding, as well as healing love.

Perhaps they may never have an unhealthy effect, so why anticipate the worst and tell her now?

Love her. When you are tempted, focus on her love for you and yours for her. Go to her if possible and spend time with her and revel in your mutual love, rather than the lonliness and isolation of your room. If you can’t see her, call her. Have a strategy. Carry a rosary at all times and start praying like mad when the attack comes. Focus on Mary’s purity of heart. Think of Joseph her chaste spouse. They are not gods. They were human. They perfected themselves through disciplined obedience to God, and you can too.

Start with a good spiritual director. And be good to yourself. You deserve it.

I would say tell her before she marries you. I am 33 and have been married to my husband for 10 years. I just found out that he has been masturbating to porn and masturbating almost everytime he showers for over 27 years. He can’t even go to McDonalds without seeing a scantily clad woman without holding onto the image and masturbating that evening. This problem is ruining our marriage. He has been cheating on me and lieing about it for years. It hurts like hell to hear that your spouse, whom you trusted with your soul forsaking all others, has betrayed you over 1000 times and is very likely to continue to do so. I would never have married him until he resolved this problem if he had told me.

So, before your propose or carry the relationship too far you must tell her. Do not deceive your girlfriend into forsaking any chance of a faithful marriage by marrying you while this problem persists. She deserves better.

No. Go to your Priest and ask him to be your spiritual advisor and kick the habit yourself. Your future fiance does not need to know anything about it as long as you take care of it before you get married. If you do not and she finds about your continuing problem after you are married you will have big trouble on your hands. Pray and then pray somemore. Hail Marys work great. Keep up the good fight and God Bless.

I wouldnt , its a personal matter between You & the Lord, she is probably struggling with it too, most of us do, sex is a very very powerful drive

To be honest, the only reason you should really talk to her about it is if it is causing problems in your relationship. I think it’s honorable that you see it as a failing in your preparations to be a good husband, but you’re not her husband yet. I’d keep it between you and your priest for now. When you do get married, I’d let her in on it, and I am sure she can help.

What it honestly sounds like is that you are like every other guy out there, struggling to stay pure in a world where purity is seen as a disease. You are probably doing far better than most of your peers, and it’s not as big of a deal to your girlfried as you think it may be. I will be praying for you! 🙂

I agree - if you are contemplating marriage, your future wife should know about the difficulty you are having. If she is willing to stand by you and help you overcome it, all the better. If she doesn’t feel up to the task, please understand that and let her go if she wishes. Marriage is a life-long commitment, and it’s devastating for a wife to learn after many years as I have that this problem has been ongoing and probably will continue for quite a lot longer. I also would never have married my husband if I had known about his strong attraction to porn until he could acknowledge it as wrong, but I might have tried to help him overcome it if he had been honest to me before we were married. Now I’m continuing to try just that, but it’s probably the most difficult challenge of my life. Please don’t make your girlfriend/possible fiance go through the torture of finding out after marriage.
Sending a prayer your way for the Lord’s guidance and strength.
