Should Latin mass be brought back?

Father, you speak with thinly veiled contempt for the people you frankly offensively label “integralists.” You condemn those who pursue what two popes called the “rightful aspirations” of those desiring the traditional liturgy. What you are doing, I would suggest, is divisive more than anything.

How so?

Consider a hypothetical moment: open mic night and you are up there reading your poetry about God. I am there also in the audience praying a rosary and meditating on the mysteries. Am I fully participating in your readings? Fully attentive? Of course not. Part of my mind is on the prayer, part on the mysteries and maybe part on what you are saying.

It seems to me that defending the rosary at Mass is a step in defending TLM since in TLM one often feels like a spectator and has plenty of opportunity to engage the mind in other prayer.

Again, I prefer not to indulge in the arrogance of deciding that people aren’t “fully participating” based on this or that action or lack thereof. What’s next? People aren’t “fully participating” if they momentarily close their eyes? If they look tired?

See that’s another big problem.
Since Vatican 2, the Eucharist isn’t taken seriously enough . I have been to weddings and funerals and seen people who probably haven’t went to Church in years or aren’t even Catholic (or one of the Orthodox or other groups Catholics allow to take the Eucharist) go up and take it. Before the public could be at the Liturgy of the Word, but had to leave for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
People have lost all respect for what the Eucharist is. I have seen young people go to these Masses and hear them respond " Thank you " when the Priest says " The body of Christ ".
This is where Vatican 2 was wrong. The old way of kneelers and railings and the Priest going down and giving the Eucharist on the tongue showed most reverance. Now people just take it in their hands and walk away without showing any care in the world. How can’t people see this? Do we want to be Protestants? I’m seriously sometimes considering the Eastern Orthodox Church now seeing as they actually still show reverance . Vatican 2 let the entire Liturgy down.

One of the ironies of the vernacular Novus Ordo is you can still ask the average person after Mass what the three readings were about, and even though they were practically shouted thanks to the obsession with microphones that seems to reign in so many places, and even though they were in the vernacular…you’d still be lucky if anyone could tell you anything about the readings.

That is not correct. The reform opened the door to distracting and “creative” versions of the liturgy. These deformations happened and should not be tolerated.

Don’t you see a difference between people momentarily closing their eyes and praying a rosary?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with someone praying a Rosary during a Mass.

Which deformation are you talking about?

I have never seen one. How. Common are they?
They were a very rare abuse made very public by the internet (and thus automattially “common” where it was really not). From my understanding, it was really only a few bad priests acting on their own, rather than anything ever supported by the Church.

Okay it never went away. But I am in a young adult catholic group, and I can tell you right now there is an interest in the Tridentine Mass.
I lived during Traditional times, when all of the masses were said in Latin. The Latin mass had a different vibe back in the day, when it was the only mass, than it does today in the 21st century.

Nowadays, the Latin mass attendees see themselves as a people apart. Some of them see themselves as more catholic than the pope himself.

That vibe would end if every ordinary mass was again a Latin mass. There would really be no change in ordinary Catholics, except they’d be listening to Latin. It isn’t like it would instantly change their behavior in the least, for better or worse, and it wouldn’t herald a change back to the 50’s in any other way

So, our learning Latin, again is suppose to help
Us care about speaking our own language better??!!!
We should learn Spanish since immigrants won’t learn American English. There is a Spanish mass already. THIS IS SO WRONG, ITS FUNNY.
Get Holy, Celibate priests, who don’t sin sexually.
If ordained and get urge—leave. A pediophile is a sick CRIMINAL. He should not be protected but charged.
Why did I jump to pediophilia? B/C I feel the church looks back to see why census is dropping or has dropped over decades. Two things happened at same time—Vatican II opened doors for HS to enlighten church and sexual revolution. The church had strongly stated homosexuality is an abomination.
After 1960’s, it sent a directive down NOT TO TEACH THAT ANYMORE. An Irish Priest is on YouTube w this revelation. Ft. Donahue or Donally.
Priests of whatever sexual flavor were to be CELIBATE. HOHO! So much for: WHY DID PRIESTS FLAGELLATE?
I don’t mean to sound disrespectful but I will remain angry on this topic till Christ comes again.
Presently, an agreement had been reached for guilty priest to have consequences. Forgot detail. But, Pope Francis rescinded agreement.
I wonder if the church thinks, if we speak Latin, it will make us think priests as Demi-god’s, as they once were. I DONT THINK SO.
May God have mercy on all of us who have suffered at the hands of religious. Keep us protected from Evil. Protect our religious from Evil. Forgive all of us, please, Father. Instill in us a right Spirit of Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus name. Amen.
P.S. VATICAN II was surrendered to the HOLY SPIRITto work. I don’t think one should mess w Holy Spirit.
In Christ’s love

You mean the Tridentine Mass? I think the 1962 Liturgy should be the norm, yes.

Yes, the Mass has evolved over time, but never so radically as that. If there could be a way to incorporate SOME of the changes made into what was the Tridentine Mass, I think we all would have been better served.

For example, the three year cycle of readings IN THE VERNACULAR could have been adopted and worked into the Mass without having to change the Latin prayers, responses, and major structure of the Mass. Keep the Mass on the altar where it belongs and off the Cranmer table. I could go on, but you get the idea.

Yah. I own the 1962 Missale Romanum. So beautiful. What were they thinking changing the Mass entirely?
I could see making some rubric changes, even switching it to the vernacular was fine which they did do during the 1960s.
But why did they change the Mass all together? It makes no sense.

There was never only Mass in Latin.

There were and always are the Churches of the East with their own liturgical traditions. These are the 23 sui juris Catholic Churches of the East who celebrate Eucharist, as we would articulate it, with diversity according to their proper languages and in a manner informed by their culture…and it was most assuredly not in Latin or Western Europe.

The East is far more in keeping with the moment of the Church’s founding and also more vividly expresses the venerable Ancient Church at her beginning and earliest generations as well as her practices.

Those Catholics who wish to regress in time can beyond beyond mere Latin and celebrate Eucharist in the Greek of the Apostolic and Sub-Apostolic Church with the Melkites or, even better, in Aramaic with the Maronites…then they could hear the language that Jesus Himself spoke.

Why? Read Sacrosantum Concilium. It is straight forward…when read honestly.
