Hi all,

I think it’s pretty well-known that this forum, although it is officially intended for dialogue with other religions, actually contains a lot of intra-Christian dialogue as well. (Note: I’m more or less assuming that my readers agree that Christianity is one religion. I don’t mean any offense to Evangelicals, Fundamentalists, etc. who believe that Catholicism and Protestantism are two different religions.)

With that in mind, I’m curious how many people believe that CAF should crack-down on intra-Christian dialogue happening in this forum. And, if so, how? (I’m not suggesting that it would have to be by abolishing this forum – even though I think that makes a pretty good thread title. 😉 It could be done by less drastic means, e.g. CAF could simply warn everyone that any threads that are not related to dialogue with other religions will be closed.) Also, where should intra-Christian dialogue go instead of this forum?

Thanks in advance to all responders,

Where is intra-Christian discussion discouraged? The name of the forum is Non-Catholic Religions, not Non-Christian Religions.

I think intra-Christian dialog is a good thing so no; I don’t think it should be banned. Now whether or not CA should ban it in this specific section and give us another section to discuss intra-Christian matters in another thing. If it were banned here I would only ask that another section of these forums would be created to continue the Christian dialog. I find myself wondering what the Methodists (for example) think more so than what the Hindus (for example) think… But that is just me. 😉

God bless

Peter,

I think that there is definitely a need for intra-Christian discussions. It seems to be going well here but, if necessary, it could have its own forum, perhaps “Non-Catholic Christians” or “Intra-Christian Dialogue.”

I value the discussions on this forum and certainly want them to continue – even the ones that occasionally ruffle my feathers.😉

Hi Eleve,

Well it really depends what you believe. Like you said, the name of the forum is “Non-Catholic Religions”. So then if Catholicism and Protestantism are two different religions (which is how Evangelicals and Fundamentalists typically consider them) then most definitely Catholic-Protestant dialogue belongs in this forum.

I however do not believe that Protestantism is “another religion”; rather I believe that Christianity (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox) is one religion. Hence, I believe that putting Catholic-Protestant dialogue (or Catholic-Orthodox dialogue, for that matter) in a forum devoted to other religions is less than ideal. It may be (and probably is) allowable to do so as a matter of necessity (where else would we put it?), but at the very least it has the danger of making people believe that we consider Protestantism to be “another religion” even though we don’t.

Sorry if that’s an overly-long answer. 😉

This is the place where non Catholics can learn the truth of what the Catholic Faith. The Protestant religions by and large have a lot of false notions of what the Catholic Church teaches. This is a very important forum for these reasons.

Shutting down this part of the forum won’t stop it - rest assured people will sneak into other parts of the forum and find ways to threadjack 😃

I think this is a good area for dialogue and discussion and truth be told I have a quiet respect for people of non-Christian background who come here to talk - I’ve been in situations where I was in the minority, and I know it’s not a lot of fun when only 5% (sometimes less!) of the discussion group agrees with you.

The title is Non-Catholic Religions. Others who post here are Christian, but not Catholic.

I’m not sure that we need another forum where Catholics can congratulate themselves on how right they are, and how wrong everyone else is.

Well, this is a Catholic site, a point that many non-Catholics here seem to be bothered by. They like this site well-enough, but think it would be better if it weren’t Catholic. 😃

Do you believe that your faith is correct?

Actually, this is a non-Catholic site…says so right on the forum title.

Actually it’s a Non-Catholic board hosted by a Catholic site.
…so…they are fibbing when they call this particular forum a ‘non-Catholic religions?’

Perhaps the name should be changed to “Not really non-Catholic religions” forum?

dianaiad,

zaffiroborant is quite correct. This forum is the “Non-Catholic Religions Forum”. The overall website is “Catholic Answer Forums”.

No.
I think it should be expanded and categories added such as:
  1. Orthodox Christian
  2. Protestant
  3. Judaism
  4. Muslim
  5. Hindu, Buddhist, Confucist,
  6. Other
That way we can just go to the category that we are interested in.

I see. So when I say that this is a non-Catholic religions forum, I am incorrect, because it is really a non-Catholic religions forum?

Gotcha.

😃

Actually, this is a non-Catholic site…says so right on the forum title.
I think you don’t know the difference between the site and the forum. This Catholic site has many forums. Non-Catholic Religions is one of them. So this forum is found on a Catholic site. The forum is to discuss non-Catholic religions. It is not a forum set aside exclusively for non-Catholic use. It is for use by Catholics on the site, as well as anyone else who wants to join in. It is not the domain of non-Catholics that Catholics are allowed to use. Some seem to think that this forum was set up for non-Catholics. I don’t think that that is true.

Part of the rules for this particular forum state - Posters are expected to treat each other as equals with equal expectations of each other in terms of research, logic, challenges, and portrayal of Catholic teaching.

I do know the difference. That’s why I use the word ‘forum,’ not ‘site,’ when I describe the 'non-Catholic religions" forum as the 'non-Catholic religions forum," not the 'non-Catholic religions site."

The thing is, inviting people into a ‘non-Catholic religions’ forum and then whopping them upside the head (after they are in and expecting courtesy, charity and fair discussion of non-Catholic religions) with the notion that we are here by sufferance only, and that we must at all times allow our own faiths to be slammed while we must be unctuously respectful of the Catholics who insult and degrade our beliefs…well, that is not honest.

If that’s what you want to do, fine, but you should, as I mentioned, change the name to “Non-Catholic religions, but not really” forum.

I do, by the way, appreciate your quote of the rules. Perhaps, now that it is actually seen, it will be a good reminder that we ARE supposed to treat each other equally in terms of expectations–of research and of courtesy.

A simple change in wording would do a world of good here, actually; address the beliefs rather than the folks who hold them?
