Should the Non-Catholic Religions Forum be abolished?

The old hillbilly saying, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” applies here. I’m not sure why this thread is here? It seems splitting hairs to me with the whole “non-Catholic religions” vs. “non-Catholic denominations” stuff. It’s working fine. Some people duke it out, me included, and there’s a lot of fascinating information I get on here from non-Catholics, especially guys like GKC and JonNC, etc. I like the different perspectives. I don’t see a need to change or re-name anything?

Hey bobzills, long time no see.

I’m afraid I’m a little puzzled by your post – it sounds like you consider Orthodox and Protestant to fall under the “other religions” category.

I do know the difference. That’s why I use the word ‘forum,’ not ‘site,’ when I describe the 'non-Catholic religions" forum as the 'non-Catholic religions forum," not the 'non-Catholic religions site."

The thing is, inviting people into a ‘non-Catholic religions’ forum and then whopping them upside the head (after they are in and expecting courtesy, charity and fair discussion of non-Catholic religions) with the notion that we are here by sufferance only, and that we must at all times allow our own faiths to be slammed while we must be unctuously respectful of the Catholics who insult and degrade our beliefs…well, that is not honest.

If that’s what you want to do, fine, but you should, as I mentioned, change the name to “Non-Catholic religions, but not really” forum.

I do, by the way, appreciate your quote of the rules. Perhaps, now that it is actually seen, it will be a good reminder that we ARE supposed to treat each other equally in terms of expectations–of research and of courtesy.

A simple change in wording would do a world of good here, actually; address the beliefs rather than the folks who hold them?

Well, this is a Catholic site, a point that many non-Catholics here seem to be bothered by. They like this site well-enough, but think it would be better if it weren’t Catholic. :D"

Your response was - "Actually, this is a non-Catholic site…says so right on the forum title. "

The title of the forum in no way implies that Catholicism is just one of many religions. This is, after all, a Catholic site. This forum is to discuss non-Catholic religions.

I agree with the bashing part. Non-Catholics are also frequently guilty of uncharitable comments about the faith. How many times to people come here and tell Catholics that they’re going to Hell, aren’t Christian, etc. Or outright lies! Statue worship is a current thread.

That is also wrong, and you will note that I do not indulge in it. In fact, I have come down, and HARD, on the Catholic side of arguments like ‘statue worship.’ What I am talking about, though, is the almost universal disdain the Catholic posters in here have for non-Catholic posters.

…It surprises me, actually. Y’see, I’ve been to usenet newsgroups that are devoted to talking about Catholicism, and the sheer vitriol I see there against Catholics is astounding–even to me and I thought I had read pretty much every nasty thing that could be written in disparagement of Catholicism by the idiots out there.

Since y’all know what it’s like to be on the receiving end, then, why are so many of you handing it out?

They fall under the non-Roman Catholic religion category as do the others that I mentioned.

Thank you for clarifying. For what it’s worth, I completely disagree: I believe that Christianity (Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant) is one religion. Protestantism isn’t “another religion” any more than Canada is “another continent”. (In saying that, of course, I’m taking for granted that I live in the USA. :D)

While I don’t think this forum should be removed since it’s already here, I think some kinds of threads should be made elsewhere. For example: Questions about Catholicism - Apologetics. Questions about, say, Mormonism - here. But comparing the two - ???

If I had been in charge, I would have probably stuck to one Apologetics board.

regardless of the semantics involved here, I still prefer that the discussions on the various groups be put into their respective categories for easy reference as I indicated above.

I’m with you. What’s wrong with the way it is? People can pick and choose what they are interested in. If you’re not interested in Islam or Atheism, don’t read the thread. Easy!🙂

This forum should continue because it brings understanding and clarity to Christianity in general.

Removing it does not help in that regard at all.

I gain additional insights to people who I rarely meet in person.

This statement from a active Mormon.

At the time I started this thread, “Should the Non-Catholic Religions Forum be abolished?” was the best title I could think of. Thinking about it now, though, I wish I had called it “Should CAF crack-down on the Non-Catholic Relgions Forum?” – since I’m really asking what people think, not about the possibility of shutting-down the forum, but simply the possibility of taking a stricter position with respect to the forum being about dialogue with other religions (and not about intra-Christian dialogue).

BTW, if I haven’t said it already, thanks to everyone who has posted their thoughts on the matter. 👍

But why shouldn’t there be intra-Christian dialogue here, or at least in a new forum on this site? I don’t see why you would allow Catholics to talk among themselves, and Christians to talk with non-Christians, but not allow Catholic Christians to not have discussions with non-Catholic Christians.

A a non-Christian forum and stop letting this one be used to dump spam and items that belong on other friends.

I completely agree with you that intra-Christian dialogue should be allowed on CAF – in fact, I don’t think anyone here has said that it shouldn’t be allowed.
