Hi,

I was wondering what all of you thought about this. On the news this am, they were satying that the muslim community wants an apology from the Pope.

As you all know Im not catholic, but Im not sure about this. The truth hurts sometimes. I think I agree with the Pope on this.

Do you guys think the Pope should apologize?

Peace

No, I dont think he should apologize.

His words are quite truthfull, and they have also been taken out of context by the Muslims.

I dont think His Holiness really cares about what anyone thinks of him- he certainly isnt playing to the crowd. I like Benedict. He tells it like it is ;).

The news did say he was upset but no apology. Who knows if the news is telling the truth anymore. I agree.

No. He should not. The Pope said nothing that was not truthful; he neither endorsed nor condemned the exerpt because he was simply presenting it as a part, a small part, of his entire speech, as ONE of several 'frames of reference."

What is next? Will no one be able to quote from books or articles anymore, lest someone 'take offense?" Revisionism is bad enough but at least people have had the faculties to research the truth found in ‘pre revision’ documents. Now it appears that the spokesmen for Islam do not even wish to consider any point of view which calls ANYTHING about Islam into question.

And they complain that CHRISTIANS are intolerant, biased, etc.

I just have to wonder how many people who have up to now been Christians-in-name-only, or who have bought into the whole viewpoint from the ‘East’ about the corruption of Christianity etc., will see the light and realize that, while no person (save God) or group is perfect, the so-called ‘sin’ and ‘corruption’ and ‘intimidation’ of the Christian church pales when compared to the Muslim leadership, then and now. No matter how they have tried to play the victim card, this incident even more than the “cartoon” incident has shown their leaders and the majority of the followers in their true light. May God help us because I fear we will be facing a bloodbath. We know that Jesus Christ is Lord and that we will be triumphant, but we also know that we will face what He faced. . .torture and death. We’ve been ‘lucky’ in the west in the last 100 years or so that, because of industrialization etc. we have had a more ‘spiritual’ fight and our ‘dying to the world’ has not involved so much physical death. But over 2000 years we were far more likely to face physical death for our faith than spiritual. We’ve ended a sort of ‘false peace’ cycle and we’re right back in the real, bloody, physical warfare for souls.

All For Him,

I pretty much agree with Tantum Ergo’s response. The Pope was citing a historical document; this does not make him equal to Hitler and Stalin as the Muslim leaders have been claiming. As long as the Muslim world calls for the death of anybody who speaks ill of them I think it would be dangerous to give in to them.

No…the truth hurts sometimes…this is an example of one of those times…they need to suck it up and face reality. They are acting like a bunch of scolded school children

The HF cannot apologize for the author of the quote. I don’t think he should apologize for something he did not say. The Muslim world is always looking for something to be offended about. That that they really seem to need anything to carry out one of their terrorist raids.

NO, he should NOT.

The present violence of Moslems just kind of goes to prove that Islam is precisely what THEY protest it is not. And while we need to find a a way to coexist in peace, it cannot be done at the expense of Truth. Either Islam is correct or Christianity is. The two diverge on a simple foundational question: One says that Jesus Christ is God from God, Light from Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made, one in being with the Father, through Whom all things were made, the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity and the Redeemer of the world, who in His Passion, Death, and Resurection made propitiation for our sins to the honor, glory, and justice of God. The other says that He was a prophet and that it is blasphemous heresy to say that the One God had a son. One says that the path to heaven is through Christ only, the other denies it. So there’s no way to reconcile the two. We just need to agree to try and live in this world in peace and let the Holy One sort us, as He will inevitably do, into the sheep and the goats on that dreadful day when He finally calls a halt to the whole thing.

I would like to see some Muslim apologies: For attempting to assassinate the pope For two attacks on the World Trade Center For attacking the Pentagon For forced conversions of captives For kidnappings . . . . . They should be busy for quite a while.

The way I see it, if they get violent in response to this, then all they’re doing is proving that he was speaking the truth - that Islam “evangelizes” through violence.

If they want him to be wrong, all they have to do is ignore him and pay attention to what’s important in life - loving your kids and doing your daily duties.

No. It was an invitation to dialogue. He should not apologize for asserting that violence has no place in religion, which was the larger message that has been cut out of the mainstream media reports.

Should our Pope apologize? Yes and No. I feel his words were taken completely out of context by the media, and others with thier own agenda. But as our spiritual leader, and the Vicar of Christ, he should make all efforts to try and reconcile this issue with the Islamic leaders.

I’m not Catholic either. But I agree with the so far unanimous voice on this thread that no apology is necessary. If there is any need for apology its from the leadership of all Islamic sects. And if any non-violent Muslims and “secular” Muslims don’t agree with the violence their “chosen” religion is inflicting upon other Muslims and non-Muslims, then they need to make their voice heard - at all costs.

What’s to “reconcile?” Islam needs to “reconcile” with the world, and especially Israel.

Has anyone heard whether the U.S. has made a statement yet? I’m really hoping that Pres. Bush will say, “Yee hah!”

No. Not unless he is convinced that what he said was wrong. The Pope has used unfortunate phrases in the past (long before becoming Pope he made some speech that apparently compared Buddhism to a kind of spiritual masturbation, though that may have been taken out of context), but in this case it seems to me that what he said was warranted.
