My joke analogy is plausible, but you are comparing that to a statement that is a) completely innocuous; and b) completely true.

Innocuous? Is not the point you were making is that whether a statement is innocuous or not is in the eye of the beholder?

True? Did the Pope saying something false? Did he misquote?

I agree with Gingrich, the Pope probably knew exactly what he was doing when he made that statement.

Up till now, the CC has remained mostly silent about the turmoil in the Middle East, and the disputation between Israel and Palestine.

I think this was Benedicts way of introducing the CC’s presence into the situation. Also, I have a hard time believing that the Pope (intelligent and experienced in politics as he is), inadvertantly made a comment like that. I tend to think he knew it would cause a reaction with the muslim world, and that reaction was probably well anticipated before the comment was made.

The Vatican is a political power in the world, they didn’t get that status by making “slips of the tongue”. They are no different than any other political platform… they use the media to accomplish their agenda.

I think it is fair to speculate that the pope has an agenda without having to explain what the agenda is. Obviously, the Vatican is not going to broadcast its whole game plan.

I’ll speculate anyway.

Perhaps Benedict has called for Islam to look at its own actions to see whether they are consistent with a religion of peace. If anything, this may be one way to draw the Muslim moderates out of hiding. If they don’t insist they are a peaceful religion, they are not honorable, or they are terrified of the terrorists as a reason for not doing so.

The pope has shown himself a brave man, possibly putting himself in harm’s way. I think he may be asking the Muslim moderates to show the same kind of bravery.

Anyway, that would be my game plan if I was pope, which I thank God daily I am not.

Anything I say of course is my own editorial, and is not necessarily based in any historical or political truth. That being said, according to prophecy (and contrary to the post-millennial view) there will arise one called Antichrist who will assume control of the world before the millennial reign of Christ. Although I do not believe the pope to be that person, I do believe a carefully planned political agenda will have to take place in order to accomodate that position, and cause the majority of the population of the world to be sympathetic to that person / position.

I think many of the things we are witnessing today is that agenda coming to fruition.
