Absolutely not, as Truth warrants no apology, and as there was nothing uncharitable about Benedict XVI’s speech.
Regardless of what we’ve heard, the speech was NOT a direct cause of the violence. These people running around the streets firebombing churches, and gunning down innocent nuns have deep-cutting problems of a social, mental, and, yes, religious nature completely independent of anything the Holy Father did or didn’t say.
It’s as if they keep a watchful eye for an excuse to act out in violence. If a non-militant Muslim even sneezes the wrong way, then whoops! There’s another widespread series of burnt buildings, and human casualties.
Their problems are much too severe to have been caused by a speech by the leader of another religion in another country, much like they were much too severe to have been caused by a stupid cartoon in some newspaper in a foreign country.
An unwarranted apology will not cure their ailments, or magically make things better for them. It’s up to them to be receptive to the peace we gladly offer. But in offering peace and charity, it would be counterproductive for us to diminish the integrity of Truth.
