Should the US become a Christian Nation?

Yes I know, that’s why I mentioned “change.” I can copy and past the Bill of Rights too. 🙂

So the Founding Fathers had the chance to write ‘a Christian Nation’ into law, but chose not to do so - why do you think that was?

Because they lived then and I already mentioned “this day and age” and how it can be an open door for Satan from my point of view. I actually love the Revolutionary time frame.

Some of them weren’t Christian, and those that were practiced a variety of different faith traditions. Additionally, they remembered the religious persecution that occurred in Europe and didn’t want to replicate it here. Also, some of our constitutional principles aren’t, strictly speaking, Christian.

Then I urge you to study and reflect on the circumstances behind this quote from a letter from Thomas Jefferson to Benjamin Rush in which he discussed the very subject you bring up here:
I promised you a letter on Christianity, which I have not forgotten. On the contrary, it is because I have reflected on it, that I find much more time necessary for it than I can at present dispose of. I have a view of the subject which ought to displease neither the rational Christian nor Deists, and would reconcile many to a character they have too hastily rejected. I do not know that it would reconcile the genus irritabile vatum who are all in arms against me. Their hostility is on too interesting ground to be softened. The delusion into which the X. Y. Z. plot shewed it possible to push the people; the successful experiment made under the prevalence of that delusion on the clause of the constitution, which, while it secured the freedom of the press, covered also the freedom of religion, had given to the clergy a very favorite hope of obtaining an establishment of a particular form of Christianity thro’ the U. S.; and as every sect believes its own form the true one, every one perhaps hoped for his own, but especially the Episcopalians & Congregationalists. The returning good sense of our country threatens abortion to their hopes, & they believe that any portion of power confided to me, will be exerted in opposition to their schemes. And they believe rightly; for I have sworn upon the altar of god, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.

Given what we are dealing with in this day and age, perhaps “change” would be better if we fully owned the fact that the US was founded on Christian values.
The US was not founded on “Christian values” the founding documents make Deist references, not Christian references.
I’m just saying, perhaps we should truly own it and include it in our laws.
Include what, exactly, in our laws?
I would love to know how many Catholics believe the United States should become a Christian Nation?
When many US states were de facto “Christian” states, it didn’t work out so well for the Catholics who were discriminated against, the churches that were burned, and the children that were proselytized in school.

States that still have a state religion, have a religion based historically on the religion of their country or its rulers-- some an unfortunate result of the Reformation. In most places, the state religion has no bearing on the character of the country or the laws it passes.

The US has nothing analogous to a shared historical religion of the people. It is not possible to say we are a “generically” Christian country. You do understand that some denominations accept abortion while others do not. Some accept same sex marriage, others do not. The plurality of belief in this country renders meaningless the idea of a “Christian nation”.
I am usually an advocate to upholding what we were founded on and I think it makes America great.
We are founded on an idea of a republic held together by the consent of the governed, rather than a religion or an ethnic nationalism.

I don’t believe that to be true at all. Would people on CAF like all the people, everywhere to embrace the truth of the Gospel? Yes. Do people on CAF want to establish state religions? No.

To be fair, the OP is pushing a theocracy.

Hmm, so what exactly does that look like? How does one do that? Which “Christian principles” does one ingrain, and who decides that? How is it “beneficial”?

Not all Christians are pro-life. Because the debate here is Christian values not Catholic.

Catholicism is thousands of year old and Protestantism is hundreds. Abortion in itself is also not modern.

The 45 year legal and moral battle in this country regarding just that subject should indicate that it is not simple.

Not all who profess to be “Christians” agree with Catholic teaching regarding this right to life in the womb, at the end of life, or for convicted criminals. In fact, many Christian denomination take positions contrary to the Catholic teaching, and yet believe themselves to be “good Christians”.

What does a “preferential option for the poor” look like from a governmental standpoint?

The values of the Western world as (name removed by moderator) believes it should be. There are many in the Western world who would argue they don’t believe that is the “way it should be”.

We forget majority of the founding fathers were Freemasons so their Christianity was diluted or changed to say the least. speaking on separation of church and state, which was popularized by Thomas Jefferson, ever heard of the Jefferson Bible? Check it out. Thomas Jefferson made his own Bible removing the miracles and supernatural events of Jesus including the resurrection so that he could view Jesus as a fellow philospher so as Catholics we should not support his ideals. I agree with you bro. Of course a Christian nation/government would be better. I would to live in medieval France. I would support a theocracy all the way. If you would not support a Catholic theocracy then why support the Vatican? Or trust the pope at all for that matter?

Just because not all Christian’s are prolife doesn’t mean it isn’t a Christian value, It just means some Christian’s reject some Christian values when it becomes conveinient. Most people who have abortions know that it is wrong.

I never said it wasn’t a Christian value. Who are most people? If that were totally true we wouldn’t have such a huge divide over the subject of abortion. We would not have the death penalty either.

No, I would not like a Christian nation because we could not agree on our common values.

Yes, we know. I’m suggesting making it a Christian nation. I didn’t ask for a history lesson and don’t need your small version of a history lesson. Do not assume what I know or do not know just because you have a strong belief. I am aware of other denominations, that the forefathers left religious persecution! I still pose the question, “Why not a Christian nation?” For the reasons I put in my original post, which you fail to read hence your response.

I don’t have specifics when you ask me to “include what exactly?” If you don’t like the idea, simply state why and then, quiet. Thank you!

The founding father’s ideas were not perfect. We currently have a lot of loop holes. I believe we could be a Christian nation, our founding fathers were not afraid to mention God. God has greatly blessed this nation, but now we cannot even mention God in any govt building or have a cross up! When the courts make it easy for people to kill unborn babies, it’s time for change, when a local school submits to one atheist little girl and covers up the Our Father at their public school, it’s time to change. Are you aware of the Muslim strong hold in this country? The Muslim judges in Dearborn Michigan who practice Sharia Law in the USA? We have banned the public display of the Ten Commandments. I can go on an on.
Hmmm smells like we need a change, we don’t live in the sam time frame as our founding fathers. I think we can balance it and become a Christian nation and yes own it.

The United States needs the Gospel. No, we should not exclude others.
