Should there be actions taken to improve or even control immodest dress at mass?

IMO the biggest problem is when females wear Provocative Clothing!!!That’s a dual issue.First it’s disrespectful of Our Lord and Second it leads some men to lustful thoughts.

I’d like to see this issue dealt with immediately!!

Any comments men???
Actually, I think that was the original subject of this thread.

giggle…you are so right.I noticed that about the same time as i hit the send button.there are 2 or 3 threads with same type question,I got confused and goofed.Thank you for being gracious about it 'cause there seems to be a case of the nasties going around lately:tiphat:

Isn’t it always? Good grief, women really get hammered on this forum.
Unfortunately for women, its womens’ “fashions” that are revealing and provacative these days. Mens’ fashions today are just goofy

How many times have you seen or heard comments about the way men dress as opposed to the times you’ve seen or heard comments about women? Women have to dress so that the poor men won’t have to make the effort to control themselves. It’s pretty rare that you hear or read anything about men having to dress a certain way to keep women from falling into sin.

When men start dressing like St Joseph, I’ll start dressing like the Blessed Virgin. Until then, I’ll stick with clean clothing and all the naughty bits covered, and allow them to do the same.

Actually, it’s in the best interest of both parties. Women need to dress modestly to protect their dignity, as well as to protect men from temptation to lust. Both women and men lose out when women’s bodies go uncovered and become objects.** I would think in this “great age of feminism” we women would be a little more concerned with self-respect and preserving our own human dignity.** Instead, we have allowed fashion “experts” to dictate for us what we can and cannot wear. I don’t know about other Catholic women, but I refuse to be taught style (much less morality!) by the likes of Klein, Chanel, and Lauren. I have a much greater sense of self-worth than that.

I wouldn’t waste my hard earned money on that **** either, but that’s my personal choice.

Clean, and naughty bits covered is modest BTW.

S’pose it depends on what you mean by “covered.” 😛 But if “covered” is truly covered (and not covered too tightly), then of course I agree!

Well, covered to my middle aged self it means pretty darn well hidden. 😃

Actually, even when I was young and thin I still wasn’t a big fan of revealing clothing. Just not my thing…

Allot of women cannot even grasp the ‘extreme’ and ‘intense’ desire that is provoked by the mere ‘sight’ of sexual imagery by men. The ‘very physical’ response is significant. Women cannot grasp it because they don’t experience it, until later in life that is. Biologically…men/boys reach their sexual peak between 13 and 18 years old whereas women don’t reach it until early to mid thirties. Young women, in particular teen-aged ones are pretty ‘clueless’ about these facts and even more in the dark by virtue of their age. With the divorce rate at over 50% for many years now, allot of these young women have had no father figure to reflect back to them what is unacceptable ‘modest’ dress. Men and women are ‘equal’ in value but we are no where near ‘the same’. Respecting that fact would lead to allot more understanding. We are ‘built’ differently, with different tools and chemistry. The rule of modesty ‘seems’ to apply mainly to women but that is not so. Men need to dress modestly as well. Women can be ‘driven’ to ‘show’ their stuff by a man who is not dressed decently. It is definitely a two way street but these are some of the reasons that the scale ‘seems’ to be tilted, as your comments indicate.

I think part of the problem is that many women AREN’T covered. I actally had a girl kneeling in front of me with her a_ _ crack hanging out and a tank top on. You tellin’ me thats okay? Why should I be subjected to that in the house of the Lord?
Also, when women wear clothes that are so tight that the clothes look like skin… …look, this is common sense stuff. Men are naturally drawn towards women, and young girl’s fashions today are often slutty. Thats just the plain truth. And men don’t weare clothes that have the same provacative effect.

You don’t have to dress like the Blessed Virgin. Just dress nice. Whats so hard about THAT!!

One example: Olympic beach volleyball players- men are covered in loose fitting shorts and sleeveless tops. Women are wearing bikinis. Obviously, bikinis aren’t needed to play better or the men would be wearing speedos or something similar.

OOPS!

I just have to say, I think it is WONDERFUL that over 75% of respondents, both male and female, think there SHOULD be something done about immodest dress at the most holy, sacred event on earth. 👍
Now why don’t I see those people in the pews every Sunday? :hmmm:

You do, actually. I know it SEEMS like the majority of the people in **some **parishes are having difficulty with modesty issues --particularly in ‘warm’ places, and particularly in summer–but overall, if you examined ‘all’ the people in ‘all’ the Masses in ‘all’ the parishes, you would get a figure much closer to 75% of people who are concerned and who are working on this problem for themselves and others–lovingly and charitably, not meanly or punitively. Who may themselves once or twice dress a little too casually (usually due to circumstances beyond their control) or who have their children go through a rebellious phase so that they’re trying to pick their battles and might let some items go through now and again hoping that the child will 'learn from the reactions of others or his own discomfort, or seeing ‘good role models’ at church, and thus change of his/her own accord. Who might have been dressing poorly last year, or 5 years ago, and have slowly but surely been ‘cleaning up’ in gradual stages, and continue to do so.

Things are getting better in some places, ‘hanging fire’ in others --and in some places, still pretty ‘awful’. . .but there is always hope.

Prayer is always helpful!

Yes, I think the church should be firmer in trying to curb the inappropriate dress. I am not sure what the problem is, but mostly they just are not thinking about who they are going to see at Mass, which is Jesus.

I have gone to the 11:45 Mass at our church, and the people are dressed to go play after they get out of Mass. The 10:00 Mass they are dressed like they are supposed to be. I really believe that people are lazy in not wanting to go back home and change after they leave church. We are a society that is on the go unfortunately, and all the stores and such are open on Sunday.

You know people used to go to Mass, and then go home for Sunday dinner and then hang out with the family. I think this change in way of living has made a difference in how they come to Mass on Sunday.

I have no idea how to help change people, but they need to be trained from an early age.

Interesting thought. We were little absolutely NOTHING was open on Sunday.Zilch.well,maybe the emergency room.We went to Mass, came home and put our good church clothes back in the closet, ate chicken dinner and then were not allowed to leave the farm.

You know, you have a point there. We have family dinners at my parents’ home many Sundays, and I’ve taken for granted that there are perhaps quite a number of families who no longer do things like that. Unless I forget, I try to remember to bring a bag with my casual clothes and leave it in the trunk so that I can change out of my church clothes when I get to my parents’ house. My husband would rather just stay in his church clothes, but I usually wear heels and such, so I like to be comfortable when hanging out with my family. It is a pain in the neck when I forget to bring my other clothes and have to stay in my church clothes, when I would rather be taking in a hike or a walk once I’m with the family, but oh well.

Those shameless hussies with their hair showing wouldn’t have been welcome in a Catholic church in 1960. And I’m pretty sure you can see that one woman’s collarbone if you tilt your head just so. Ooooh-- I think they are even wearing FACE PAINT!!!

Which kind of prooves that modesty is both in the eye of the beholder, and a constantly moving target.

I’m NOT advocating tank tops and short shorts, but I do think it’s possible to go too far in the other direction, too.

That’s why I don’t like the idea of a posted dress code: I’m honestly afraid of just who in my parish would appoint herself to write it [remembering my 13y.o. sister tearfully pinning a kleenex to her head on the way to church because she’d forgotten her holy doily].
