However, it isn’t the touching thing that bothers me… it’s the fact that Jesus Christ is physically present and yet we have turned our attention to each other in this superficial meet and greet superfun rockband church type activity.
I haven’t been to your parish. Is it really such a party atmosphere? I think of the sign of peace as somewhat more dignified, acknowledging that we are all members of the one Body of Christ (as in 1 Corinthians 12:27) or making peace with our fellow man (Matthew 5:9 and 5:23-24). I think it is compatible with the Eucharist.

I think of John 13:1 or Matthew 25:40. 🙂

…For all the trad complaints about worship music, etc., sometimes they are not at all unlike the radical left-wing of the Church in that they want to pick and choose like this, it’s just that they skew in the opposite direction. Ironic, don’t cha think?
I can’t disagree.

the purpose could have been explained more thoroughly, nevertheless, if the Church requires it, we are obligated to obey.

You sound like a very faithful Catholic. I can understand your emotions surrounding this issue. I can understand your preference against this practice.

What I do not understand is how you could accept every iota of Catholic doctrine so faithfully, while at the same time believing that the Church was allowing (and even encouraging) millions of people to disrespect Christ on a daily basis. Don’t you think God would have sent the Pope a memo by now?
Food for thought. :tiphat:

At daily Mass it really does seem out of hand. The Cathedral is huge. And we’re talking maybe 40 attendees that sit greatly spread out from each other. People turn around and wave to the whole congregation, leave pews etc. On the weekends, there are a lot more people present and it’s much more solemn.

Lady you have issues which are too deep for this venue. Seek help. I’m sorry I answered your original question. To deny yourself Holy Communion just for nothing? You got problems too deep for this forum.
Whoa.

The Church REQUIRES us to receive ONCE a year. Please learn the Precepts of the Church before making such judgemental comments.

I just shake hands with whoever offers, but I don’t initiate anything. Our SOP only lasts like one minute anyway, so it’s hardly distracting. And I’ve never seen anyone get out of the pew.

Yes I feel very strongly about this.
I feel the same way. And there are others as well at the weekday Mass I attend. I’ve noticed them do much the same, bowing their heads and waiting for the Agnus Dei to begin.

It is indeed in an awkward place. We go from solemn prayer, to the Sign of Peace, back to solemn prayer. I just make eye contact with someone and nod, then close my eyes and waith for the Agnus Dei.

Do you guys realize that the sign of peace is offering peace to those who we are fighting with as well as well as offering Christ’s Peace to His people. Before receiving Communion, we need to be perfect as Our Father is perfect. We have a 2000+ year history of having these traditions in the mass. The mass is Perfection and it always will be! Thats why its Catholic. Thats why we are Catholic

The sign of peace is a part of the Mass and sorry but you need to participate in it. I also dread it since I don’t like handshaking germy hands but it is part of the Mass and has to be done. You are very lucky to be able to sit away from people and therefore can just sort of wave and grin. I try to position myself in a spot for Mass where there is no-one close by. Unfortunately, it is a part of the Mass which is unavoidable. Just do the best you can and sit where you don’t need to touch another person during the SOP.
The sign of peace as you say is part of the Mass but participating in it does not oblige us to shake hands. I keep my hands together and simply slightly bow my head to the various people near me and say peace be with you.

There is no requirement to shake “germy hands.” A nod and a smile and a “peace be with you” are perfectly acceptable. I don’t understand all the complaints about something that doesn’t even have to be done.

Why not try a solemn Sign of Peace .

In a dignified and serious and genuine way shake the hands of those near you , sincerely offering them the peace of the Lord .

In that way it will all be solemn .

It’s quite simple really .

In my parish, some of the faithful still shake their hands among each other… This practice is slowly abandoned right now…

Most of the faithful in our parish will only bow to the person in front of them, person next to them on their right and left, and behind them because sign of peace was supposed to be done quickly.

For an example, when I am on my own during Mass, I only bow to each other without shaking hands… I only shake my hands to my relatives and family. 😃

Sorry, but I find this all very negative. It’s just a handshake for God’s sake!!! I’ve shaken a million hands throughout all my years going to church and I’ve never gotten sick. And I’ll never decline one.

this is not primarily about the sign of peace. its another of the endless excuses to attack the OF.

No I think you’ll find that it is about the sign of peace. Read the thread title and the OP. If that discussion turns into a legitimate criticism of the Pauline Rite regarding this specific rubric then so what? Why get your knickers in a twist about something like that? Good grief.

Has this topic been discussed many times with similar results?
Yep.

The OP does’t need to participate in it if it will damage her prayer. What Vatican II meant by “active participation” wasn’t the congregation taking over for the priest but, more time for reflective silence ~ more interior participation. The “Sign of Piece” doesn’t have to be done either — it is avoidable as the discretion of the priest: it is an option. It isn’t unavoidable.

on a thread critical of the OF of the Mass, I observe that people are picking and choosing what part of Mass they want to participate in, much like any good cafeteria catholic or protestant. this time its the sign of peace, next time it will be something else. it doesn’t really matter, the specific issue is merely a pretext to complain about the OF.

Unfortunately, they leave the pew in my Parish, even going across the aisles to get to their friends waaay over there, and call out to each other, almost getting conversations going, at times. I find it terribly distracting. And I am one of those who prefers to avoid the “germy” hands also, as my husband has a very real and life-threatening illness. He simply can’t afford even one more case of cold/flu again. Two weeks in ICU for lung related issues last time was two weeks too many for me. I’m with you, Jenny35, whatever your reason.
