Europe bracing for another deadly summer, Protugal experiencing worst droughts in 300 years, California has 100 year rains, tsunami, earthquakes (CA, Nicaraugua)…

Are these signs from God?

If they are… then he needs a new game plan and a better way to communicate…

Humanity is its own disaster. I don’t think God could give a clearer sign than that…

If God didn’t do something, He owes an apology to Soddom and Gommorah

Nah, except for the tsunami and earthquakes they are just experiencing a typical Illinois summer.

15,000 elderly do not typically die from the heat in Illinois each summer, do they?

I live in California, and the rain wasn’t that bad. Didn’t even set a record.

As you mentioned, it is a 100 year rainfall, that is, it occurs *naturally *every hundred years or so.

I agree (I live very close to you) it was not that bad, and it does occur naturally every roughly 100 years. Still, it was very unusual (I was not around 100 years ago), and felt like it was never going to stop.

In any case, it is the congruence of all these events that seems unusual, not any particular one.

Depends on who you ask, we had a heat wave here a couple of years ago where the Cook County Coroner counted every elderly death that he could as heat related, even if the person was over weight, had a bad heart, smoked and drank heavily and had a heart attack sitting in the back yard he said it was a heat death. To be serious no we do not have that many heat deaths, we also don’t have the population of Europe and I was being a smart alec.

I think these weather phenomena are just that – weather. They come and go, in cycles, and are nothing new. If you get a chance, read the book “The Long Winter” by Laura Ingalls Wilder, for a description of the winter of 1880-1881, which must have been one of the worst on record.

Well then you need to read Michael Brown’s book, “Sent To Earth” to see that GOD really does use nature to wake us up and call us back to HIM

I have read the book you mentioned; it really is provocative and own-right scary. I have to laugh at the man-made global warming warnings; throughout history there are periods of sudden and extreme changes in weather and they all seem to happen at the time when man is most decadent.

Is it possible that God uses nature to remove the cause of our sins? I think so.

The scary thing is the world will tell man it is his doing (global warming, ozone holes, etc.), and then prescribe the cure. And man may go along with it. Thankfully, Bush stood alone against the Kyoto Protocol. If there is any global warming going on, I think we need a lot longer to know for sure.

I think God uses many ways to communicate with us. And the events of life are one of them.

If you look back at the OT God used “natural” disasters as well as “the nations” to chastise his wayward people. Obvious examples of the first are The Flood in Genesis and the great drought called down by Elijah.

When things got really bad God seems to have sent prophets to warn people. Then if they repented there was a revival in fortunes and refreshment for his people. If they took no notice there was judgement and chastisement.

We are now the heirs of the chosen peopel and of the prophets
We have had a great prophet in John Paul II. Have we (nations as well as individuals) listened to him?

It is not just weather, but we can add to that the biological disasters such as Aids, SARS (that was nearly one) and I hear there is a danger of bird flue becoming a pandemic.
Then, are the likes of al-Quada becoming “the nations” for us?

There is huge need for repentance and change of heart, not just at an individual level but by our nations. I don’t think that ever before has sin been so built into the structure of our society and laws - e.g abortion & same sex marriage (coming soon to your nation if not there already).

God is mocked with impunity.

AMEN!

Modern man cannot accept this because he has other gods- science, medicine, sociology, etc. to explain and manage these phenomenon.

Not to mention that within my own lifetime we went from an ice age scare to a global warming scare with Alar, and too-numerous-to-count other scares thrown in.

Considering the millions of years of history of our planet, one generation of measuring ocean levels and ozone is not enough to perceive a pattern. Not to mention that most of the predictions come from horrendously flawed computer programs. I am grimly humored by the daily headlines that come across the internet touting the dangers of global warming. It’s the old disinformation ploy: It doesn’t matter whether or not if it’s true: teach it to the young and repeat it often enough and all will believe it.

My all time favorites, though, are punctuated equilibrium (instead of happening gradually, evolution occurred in one generation–too quickly to leace a fossil record) to explain why there is no fossil record of inter-species evolution, and record freezes and cold weather being a result of global warming. If that isn’t eating your cake and having it, too.

For the record, I too think that God is alive and well. God permits all that happens to happen, whether He wills it or allows man through free will to will it or cause it to happen. I was struck by all of the powerful hurricanes that struck Florida throughout the Schiavo debacle.

Personally I cringe whenever someone says “God bless America.” I prefer that He bless individual Americans and give them the graces needed to bring this country back to a morality in line with divine revelation first. His blessing, if we insist on calling it down on our heads, may well be in the nature of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Whatever happens, I try to teach my children and others the Gospel message, the Truth of God with us, Emmanuel, as well as how to recognize the fallacious thinking that is commonly accepted as rational today.

I think all of Creation is a sign from God, and when environmental degradation occurs and harms us, it’s a sign that we should remember our call to be good stewards of creation.

If I leave my dishes out without washing them, the resulting smell is a sign of my irresponsibility. Sign from God? Sure.

As far as weather, climate is far too complex a phenomenon to draw firm conclusions. Other things, though, such as the expansion of deserts (especially the Sahara) and the failing health of the Great Lakes are a sign that we have been poor stewards. If you want to call that a sign from God, I won’t argue.

You’re quite wrong, Robin L. Global warming is undeniable, and man’s contribution to it is undeniable; the only uncertainty is how bad will things really be for the planet in decades ahead - a little bit bad or a whole lot bad. Atmospheric scientists are in consensus that it is real. Global warming has nothing to do with the ozone layer. There is a good National Geographic from 1 or 2 years ago that explains the situation in nice, easy-to-read prose, with lots of pictures. The nonchalant attitude toward the issue that a lot of people have is distressing, and I have no idea where it comes from (?disinterest about the future, ?being duped by interest groups). Maybe global warming won’t affect me and you, but it almost certainly will affect my children’s generation, and their children’s, and it’s an issue that needs to be seriously addressed, and soon.
