This is quite comical. Jonah fulfilled his own calling, just as Peter did. And Jesus, as you well know, was aware that Peter was going to falter and yet still made him the Rock.Back to Simon Bar Jonah. I think Dr. Scott Hahn must have left out that even though Jesus calls Simon Bar Jonah in Matthew 16:16, in Matthew 16:22-23 we see:
Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. 23But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
So then I would say that Jesus calls Peter Simon Bar Jonah because like Jonah one minute he gets an assignment to declare Jesus the Son of God and the next minute God the Son Jesus calls him “Satan”. Thus Simon is really not the Son of Abraham but the son of Jonah failing to fullfill his own calling. Peter never recovered from this moment on. He is on skid row. He only gets back at his feet on the day of Pentecost.!
