There was an episode on the Simpsons that advacated same-sex unions. I thought this was an outrage and an insult to christianity. It seems to me as usual that these producers have little understanding of our faith. All in all, I feel that this episode in particular was morally unacceptable. And it seems to me that they embrace what the country of Canada and its legislation did by making same sex unions legal and the fining of religious clerics. The producers therefore seem to be applauding this.

Watched the program once. Desided it was no way we wanted to spend GOD’s time.:nope:

I’m sorry but I must hold my opinion in reservation. In these controversial cartoons, I often watch the same episode others do and think that much of the Church bashing is done tongue-in-cheek, and in some cases makes subtle fun of the Church’s opponents. Sometimes is has to do with sense of humor.

I seldom watch TV and haven’t seen Simpson’s for years, so I’m not denying what you say. What specifically did they say and do that made it seem OK, and were there not some “digs” taken at both sides? Of course it might be biased, but what I’m looking for is whether it “intended” to at least give both sides at least one valid point.

That’s how South Park seems to do it. They may have an agenda but it’s hard to tell sometimes from their parodies if they even come down on one side or the other. You can hate the show all day for the topics it covers and the way it does it, but it’s hard to say it unfairly condemns any particular group over any other.

I dont quite understand how you can call it an insult to christianity, as some christian churches do allow people in same sex relationships to marry. Besides the makers of these shows do not expect people to take them seriously, the simpsons is a comedy. If you were trying to find out about christianity then you would not go and watch the simpsons as your primary resource

The Simpsons has gotten rather stupid, imo. Lisa is a Buddhist vegetarian, every other character is now homosexual, and the entire show is just one giant celebrity walk-on.

Pass.

Well, Lisa is a Buddhist vegetarian because there were two good shows that gently ribbed Buddhists and vegetarians - why not?!, there are actually only a handful of gay characters in the show out of a cast of maybe about a hundred (hardly ‘every other’ character, and indeed probably less than the proportion of actually gay people in society), and there are too many celeb shows but still only a few a season.

It’s not as funny as it once was, but familiarity breeds contempt.

As to the ‘gay marriage’ episode, it did what all good satire does and gently joked at the expense of all sides. Homer ran out of gay marriages to perform so started ‘marrying’ all manner of things and household objects, and the ‘showpiece’ gay wedding at the end turned out to be a farce and wasn’t gone through with. Marge had to confront the fact that she supported gay weddings except when her sister wanted to have one, then suddenly she was opposed.

As far as I can see, the Simpsons with very few exceptions has no political or moral agenda, it is just interested in humerous satire.

Caught it on a repeat and LOVED IT!

Anything is ripe for satire as far as I am concerned as long as its not dont maliciously.

I’m really really waiting for them to re-air the one where Bart and Homer turn Catholic.

i agree with mike. i thought the funniest part was when homer fantasized that he could marry himself and have kids. they were little homers running around and he said something to the effect of how beautiful his partner was.

kind of sick but funny and did show the absurdity of same sex unions.

Wait till you see the one where Bart and Homer become Catholics and Marge, Rev. Lovejoy and Ned Flanders rush off to save them.

Best Quote from that show from Rev. Lovejoy “They can’t be saved unless they are part of the true Christian Church…the reformed branch of southwestern episco-lutheranism abstaining from the pastoral conference of 1932.”

Wasn’t there another episode where Bart asked if they could become Catholic so they could get something to eat at church, and Marge refused because “Three kids in quite enough, thank-you”.?

Sorry, I can’t agree with you. In the episode, they only legalized same-sex marriage for money. The show was just making fun of the situation. They made some jokes that may have been in poor taste, but I don’t think they were trying to advance any particular position. They were just trying to be funny.

They did make the Christians, or Rev. Lovejoy at least, look like idiots, which is somewhat unfortuanate. On the other hand, I can’t honestly deny that the type of Christians depicted in The Simpsons are indeed idiots. Unfortunately, few people will understand that Catholics are not that type of Christian.

Many people have complained that The Simpsons isn’t as funny as it used to be. I don’t disagree, but I think the last season was an improvement over the few preceeding seasons.

At any rate, there was at least one thread discussing this after the episode first aired a few months ago.

“Marge had to confront the fact that she supported gay weddings except when her sister wanted to have one, then suddenly she was opposed.”

In my experience the opposite is true, ie. people who strongly oppose gay marriage are very supportive of their gay friends and relatives who choose a ceremony to mark their committment.

Well, Marge eventually came around and supported her sister.😃

Once you go Vatican, you can’t go back again.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: 😛

Simpsons have no political agenda, they just parody what ever is in pop culture. Although, I can see why people get offended. The Simpsons have always used religion. In one episode, homer calls God his favorite fictional character and in another, he discovers that God doesn’t exist.
If it really upsets you, write to them or switch to EWTN :bible1:
GOD BLESS!!!
