The Bible gives an example of a couple who sinned against the Holy Spirit and so were not forgiven, vis:
“‘Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet. Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God.” When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened. Then the young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him. About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?” “Yes,” she said, “that is the price.” Peter said to her, “How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.” At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.’” (Acts 5: 1-10 NIV)
So, Peter, who had lied three times when he denied Jesus, still had the authority to comdemn Ananis and Sapphira…… for lying!!!
Peter’s lies were forgivable but the lies told by Ananias and Sapphira were not forgiven. They were “lies against the Holy Spirit”.
What was the difference between them?
Here it is: Ananias and Sapphira belonged to the Earth, so much so that they couldn’t bear to part with it entirely. They buried part of what they had received for their land. On the other hand, when Jesus said to Peter “follow me!” Peter, together with his brother Andrew, walked away from his fishing nets and his livelihood, because Peter belongs to God and not to the Earth. But Ananias and Sapphira belonged to the Earth. You see, Jesus had said of His disciples, including Peter “They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.” (John 17: 16 NIV)
Those who belong to Jesus can fully obey the commandments “love God” and “love thy neighbour”.
Those who belong to the world love the things of this world more than they love God or their neighbour. I believe that is the sin against the Holy Spirit.
The interesting thing about this is that no common person can order himself/herself to love anyone. No man can say to himself “in five minutes I’m going to start loving God and Mr. Smith and Miss Jones like crazy!” and then actually do it….
The only one who can order us to love is He who ordered the blind to see and the lame to walk and the dead to resuscitate. So we’re all in His hands.
