Hello everyone,
I’ve had a really hard week this week with sin, confession etc.
I want to know, is eating too fast without realizing it a sin (gluttony)? also, if I realized I was eating too fast and then slowed down am I still guilty of a mortal sin of gluttony?
Gluttony is very rarely a mortal sin, so don’t let it stress you out, eating to fast is not a mortal sin, and only a mild venial sin at best, because the fact remains, you need food, and by eating you are doing something good, and doing what God wants you to do, and although our eating habits are not always perfect or 100% healthy, it’s still good because we’re accomplishing the purpose of eating, which is to nourish our bodies,
and gluttony only becomes serious when we seriously hurt our-self or someone else by it(or risk doing so), such as eating merely for the enjoyment and then vomiting so you can do it again, or drinking to the point of over-intoxication, or preferring more expensive foods and depriving your family for them, or making food your God, being willing to offend Him for the food you love…etc. etc.
but things like even over-eating to the point of not being able to eat any more, that is not a mortal sin, or being to picky or fussy with food, or being impatient with it(wanting it when you want it), those are really only venial sins, although still not good, but won’t send you to hell,
it just becomes serious when we put to much importance on the pleasure connected with eating or drinking, to the point of being willing to hurt yourself or others to get it, or being willing to offend God for it,
so, this isn’t something to lose your peace over, and i would recommend just speaking with your confessor or spiritual director about these kinds of things, they will be able to help you the most and more readily.
but, to answer your question in general about not realizing you are sinning, and then when you do realize it, you stop,
that is actually a good thing, and not a sin, that is fighting the sin and it makes you stronger, and God is pleased with it, you can’t commit a mortal sin without knowing it, because the requirements for mortal sin are - full knowledge, full consent, and grave matter, so if you do not fully consent, meaning to see the sin or temptation, and then willingly go through with it, then you have not sinned.
ok? so i hope this helps, take care.
