Hello everyone,

I’ve had a really hard week this week with sin, confession etc.
I want to know, is eating too fast without realizing it a sin (gluttony)? also, if I realized I was eating too fast and then slowed down am I still guilty of a mortal sin of gluttony?

No

I would imagine gluttony was more to do with quantity than speed of consumption. 👍

Yeah I agree with Nicholas II;

Definition of Gluttony taken from Google; “habitual eating to excess” - So the amount you eat rather than how fast you eat it. - Don’t you worry. 🙂

Hi Foreveradorehim:

Gluttony is defined to be the “excessive consumption of food and drink”; I don’t think speed enters into it, and even if it did, because it is indulgence in something that is not bad, the sin would be venial anyway. The Catholic Encyclopedia has an entry on Gluttony here:

catholic.org/encyclopedia/view.php?id=5207

It says, “Clearly one who uses food or drink in such a way as to injure his health or impair the mental equipment needed for the discharge of his duties, is guilty of the sin of gluttony.” That doesn’t sound like what you are doing.

I hope this helps.

Jacques, I don’t think I indulged to excess, so I wouldn’t be guilty. Thanks, and thank all of you. God bless.

Gluttony is very rarely a mortal sin, so don’t let it stress you out, eating to fast is not a mortal sin, and only a mild venial sin at best, because the fact remains, you need food, and by eating you are doing something good, and doing what God wants you to do, and although our eating habits are not always perfect or 100% healthy, it’s still good because we’re accomplishing the purpose of eating, which is to nourish our bodies,
and gluttony only becomes serious when we seriously hurt our-self or someone else by it(or risk doing so), such as eating merely for the enjoyment and then vomiting so you can do it again, or drinking to the point of over-intoxication, or preferring more expensive foods and depriving your family for them, or making food your God, being willing to offend Him for the food you love…etc. etc.

but things like even over-eating to the point of not being able to eat any more, that is not a mortal sin, or being to picky or fussy with food, or being impatient with it(wanting it when you want it), those are really only venial sins, although still not good, but won’t send you to hell,
it just becomes serious when we put to much importance on the pleasure connected with eating or drinking, to the point of being willing to hurt yourself or others to get it, or being willing to offend God for it,

so, this isn’t something to lose your peace over, and i would recommend just speaking with your confessor or spiritual director about these kinds of things, they will be able to help you the most and more readily.

but, to answer your question in general about not realizing you are sinning, and then when you do realize it, you stop,
that is actually a good thing, and not a sin, that is fighting the sin and it makes you stronger, and God is pleased with it, you can’t commit a mortal sin without knowing it, because the requirements for mortal sin are - full knowledge, full consent, and grave matter, so if you do not fully consent, meaning to see the sin or temptation, and then willingly go through with it, then you have not sinned.

ok? so i hope this helps, take care.

this helps alot, Emerald my friend, thanks a bunch!

I’ve eaten fast my whole life (I’m 63) but that is not a sin.
Gluttony has nothing to do with eating fast. Gluttony is eating to excess.

Saint Thomas Aquinas says gluttony may happen in 5 ways - “too soon, too expensively, too much, too eagerly, too daintily.”

gluttony is not just about eating to excess, but it is also about eating or drinking inordinately, or intemperately, that’s why the opposing virtue of gluttony is temperance, which is the virtue of moderation and self-restraint.

but even though you may not think eating to fast is a sin or bad, i’ve spoken with my doctor about that, and he says that eating to fast is bad for your health, because digestion starts in the mouth, and you need to let your saliva mix well with what you’re eating, which starts the process of breaking down the food, and those who are in the habit of eating to fast tend to gain weight,
although i don’t think it’s as bad if done in-frequently, but my doctor would know, he doesn’t have alot of time for eating, so he eats real fast when he gets the chance, and he’s very over weight, but he doesn’t over eat…so, something to think about.

if you like to read the writings of the saints, such as Saint Alphonsus or Saint John Vianney or other doctors of the church, they speak of gluttony on a much more philosophical level, and maybe that would help deepen your understanding of it, or any vice for that matter.

That’s what I meant by “excess”. I just didn’t want to give a long story.
My point was about eating fast. Eating fast is NOT a sin and so far in my 63 years it has not affected my health.

I want to know, is eating

without realizing it a sin (?
you can apply your question to any situation, no if you did not act deliberately with knowledge and full free consent of the will you did not sin, no matter what verb you insert.
