If you give something up for lent such as candy and then give in to it and eat some anyway, is this considered a sin?

It is not an objective sin if it is not undertaken as a vow made to God and in God’s name or is required by a precept of the Church.

I said i would give up wine, chocolate and meat and have failed on all 3!!! It is only a sin if you fail to give up what the church decrees. Meat on friday is one.

You have made a lentern promise which is not bound in law. It is just a weakness if you fail to go through lent without keeping to that promise. Just like me!

You need to talk this over with a priest in Confession. Never forget the old adage: When in doubt, confess!
It is too easy to convince oneself that something is not a sin when it is. In the case of some sins one often repeats, we become inured to the severity of the act. It is one of Satan’s classic snares.
So, don’t cop out to your weaknesses…That is why we have the gift of Confession.

If this was a sin, almost all of us would have to go to Confession, probably even some priests! This is almost like a New Years resolution. We do this with the best intentions, but invariably fail at least sometimes. I think trying to give up 3 things at once would be very difficult. Maybe instead you could try to do something extra like a Rosary, Bible readings or giving up a TV show you like. I find giving up something DIFFERENT each day works. For example, don’t eat dessert or candy one day. Next day be extra nice to your spouse or kids, (that’s harder than the food sometimes ), going to Mass during the week, helping someone in need , calling a friend up etc.

I think the only way this would be a sin was if this was a frivolous Lenten Resolution, and you never intended giving anything up. Remember we are weak humans. Even the Apostles fell Asleep in the Garden.

I’m curious…where have you seen this? Because, I have to be honest, that sounds like dubious advice. We should confess sins, to be sure. But, encouraging someone to confess things that AREN’T sins is encouraging scrupulosity.

The issue in question certainly is not sinful. So, why would it be matter for the sacrament of penance?

I believe that sometimes a simple and direct answer to a simple and direct question can be the most helpful. That being the case
