Sinead O'Connor rips into Irish Catholic Church again on child-abuse scandal

IrishCentral editors received an email last night from Irish singer Sinead O’Connor — who once infamously ripped a photo of Pope John Paul II on “Saturday Night Live” in a bizarre protest against the Catholic Church — in which she rips into the Church again, and with seething rage.

In the email, which longtime Irish Voice music writer Mike Farragher verified is genuine in a telephone call with the star, O’Connor, 49, says she speaks “on behalf of all Irish artists” in protest against the child and sex-abuse scandal in which the Irish Catholic Church is currently embroiled.

As angry as her “letter to the editor” is, O’Connor went even farther in her conversation this morning with Farragher.

“I feel strongly that we are proud of our faith and feel completely betrayed,” she told him. “They are withholding documents still. When they are asked to produce anything, there has been no reply, not even a refusal.

"'The Pope does not comment on these matters’ is what they say. That has made people even angrier. There is talk about calling for a boycott of Mass next Sunday. It will send a message if no one is in the pews. There is also talk about having the Irish ambassador withdrawn from the Vatican.

This is news?:confused: The anger in Ireland is immense, both at the sexual crimes and the subsequent cover ups. The way the Vatican seems to be dragging its heels on this does not inspire joy either. Sinead is mearly stating out loud what many Irish are muttering under their breath. And it will get a lot worse the longer the Church seems to try and ignore or gloss over the root cause. 🤷

Why hasn’t the Pope or someone else at the Vatican given an apology or something else to say sorry? I know the Pope is meeting with a Cardinal from Ireland, but the Pope needs to do something more direct.
 
Not to take away from the horror of the situation in Ireland, but isn’t Sinead O’Connor an ordained priest in the Palmarian catholic church? She seems to be speaking on behalf of Irish Catholics, but I wonder why her thoughts have any relevance to the situation?

Maybe if the Church had taken seriously the message of Christ Sinead would not feel as she does; betrayed. BTW, while I would not rip his picture, I am not a JP2 fan because of the sexual scandal. He not only ignored it, but went out of the way to bury it. Look at Fr, Maciel and all the questions around him which have been proven true. JP squashed any opposition to this guy. Thankfully B16 got involved.

Before you get on Sinead’s case you had better get the log out of your own eye.

Whoah whoah whoah. You yourself are weighing heavy allegations against Pope John Paul. Please back up your own accusations if you are going to preach about logs in people’s eyes.

See above. JP2 would never hear anything bad about Maciel because Maciel was so orthodox, if you want to ignore sexual deviency. Cardinal Bernard Law is the picture of bishop complicity in the sex scandal. He left Boston ahead of the posse to a goog gig in Rome. It’s hard to believe, but Law is part of a committee that recommends candidates to be bishops in the U.S.

JP2 was pope during this whole scandal and showed no leadership. I can not understand why people revere him so.
 
All I meant was that Sinead probably isn’t the most objective person to comment on this. I don’t doubt she was wounded by the Church in Ireland, and that less than holy priests and bishops probably led to her leaving the Church. I just don’t think her comments are all that helpful. We all know how bad the situation was, and more is coming out all the time. Just because she is famous doesn’t make her thoughts any more relevant than anyone else who lived through this crisis. She just happens to have the soapbox because she’s famous. I hope this makes sense, because it’s hard typing with a giant log in my eye.
 
HHJP2 did so many other things for the Church, so far as dialoguing with our seperated brethren, encouraging us to be proactive in bettering our communities, adding the Luminous Mysteries to the prayers of the Rosary, clarifying the Faith and working for unity among faiths that he’s now not only called “the Great”, but he’s being considered for canonization. He was already quite old when the scandals broke out in 2002, but even so he did address the situation. If Sinead O’Connor is not a Catholic in communion with the See of Rome, I don’t see how relevant her statements are, especially if she would presume to speak for those Irish people who do enjoy such communion. The scandals in Ireland are terrible, but is the Pope not going to address them with the Irish Cardinal he’s scheduled to speak with?

Who are the sources for the statements made by that blogger? He makes claims about the Pope’s attitudes, actions, and inactions that are not public knowledge. Did he have an inside source that close to the Holy Father? How does he know what Pope John Paul II thought?
 
I have to say that I understand her anger, though calling for a boycott of Mass on Sunday is not good. People boycotting the Eucharistic Lord is not the way to deal with this. Those outside the Church have a right to feel angry and betrayed by the sex abuse scandals–it’s terrible. I wonder if our Holy Church will ever recover from this, ever regain her credibility. I would never leave, but I feel so sad about all of this.

BTW, I believe O’Connor apologized for tearing up the picture of JP2. As I recall, her words were “I’m so sorry, Holy Father,” and were very heartfelt indead. I shall search for an article to support this. And if that’s the case, I think we should leave her alone about that episode.

Why would any Catholic trust the reporting of an organization that promotes such an attitude toward religion? It clearly is not out to spread the Truth, and thus is not out to support it.
