Sinful names used by parents

It was my child though, my faith is ingrained enough to name my kids after a saint, or at least ask the priest if it’s a requirement.
You don’t need to ask a priest if it’s a requirement, as it’s not. It’s a tradition in some cultures, but it’s not a requirement.

My children are the very essence of their names and they fit them well. In fact, one of them has a non-saint first and middle name that makes reference to a virtue. And while my children are small, oddly enough I can see that child being the one with a vocation.

That child has a patron saint. Not the child’s name.

I was given a name by my biological parents. Ironically, in a way, my name predicted my adoption. In my adoptive family, because of family tradition, given names (first and last) are not changed with adoption. I do not like that but I have aunts and uncles who still have their given names.

However, I feel God ordained for me a patron–and with some super coincidence that patron–whom I’ve honored even before my adoption—is an integral part of my family.

I honestly think your daughter’s name is cool, and I think that as much as I hate my name because of what it represents I would feel resentful if my parents regretted it. My parents made the choice to, in some sense, give me my name because they chose to keep it what it was. If they regretted that, I’d be kinda sad…and I think that my brothers–their biological children–would also feel sad if they regretted their names—conversion or no.

I think that’s awesome that your children have patrons! May I ask how you go about that? Do you choose the saint that you think would be relateable or helpful as a role model and then pray to them or do that have it like a second middle name?

Those with saint names–that is their patron.

Those without, knowing that they didn’t have one I prayed about it.

We do a modified family litany every night with our patrons.

So something like this (made up for privacy)

St. Luke (patron of our family)…pray for us
St. John (hubby name)…pray for us
St. Rose (my patron, not my name) pray for us
St. Joan (kid name) pray for us
St. Michael (not-kid-name but patron)…pray for us
…etc (I’m lacking creativity this morning to make up a name for everyone)

we will also tack on any particular saints feast days that are that day, saints that have inspired us that day, saints our friends asked us to pray to typically, St. Jude, St. Anthony, St. Dymphna, St. Claire (for or family musicians), St. Francis (for pets).

When we pray for people we often ask about their patron saint or the saint that they are praying to. One of my friend’s husband is undergoing cancer treatments and he is praying to Venerable Solonus Casey. So we also have him in our litany.
