Singing the "Our Father"

So, our Haugen/Hass loving music director started something new recently, and I was taken by surprise.

So here’s what happens: right before the communion rite begins we have father saying “Let us pray with confidence in the words our savior gave us”. Well, the music begins right before he says this, and continues under, like a musical score from a movie…then we sing the “Our Father”, which sounds like a Burt Bacharach tune, by the way.

Then father says his bit, “Deliver us Lord…” again with the music not so softly underscoring his words.

Then the music swells to a fantastic crescendo as we sing “For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen! Aaaammmeeennnnnnnnnn!”

Now this last part is the worst of all as it seem we are making "For the kingdom…"etc into it’s own little prayer, or worse, it sounds, with it’s added “Amens” as if it is the true end of the “Our Father”, which we know is not the case.

Should I bring this up to my priest, who doesn’t like to rock the boat with this type of thing? What is the justification for bringing it up in the first place? Other than I don’t like it…there has to be something…It just all seems very protestant to me…😦
I hate singing it. The Our Father is usually the strongest part of the mass when spoken, and it’s extremely weak when sung.

You didn’t answer my question. I’d still like to know who was doing all this chanting you to which you refer.
Even if it is just the priest doing the chanting, there was a time the prayer was not chanted. Jesus didn’t chant the prayer, so why should anyone else?
What you don’t seem to understand is that now that the liturgy is subject to fashion, you one day may be confronted by music in the Mass that you find as dreadful as I do the dreary OPC junk thats been forced on us. If they can do it to “my” sacred music, they can do it to yours just as easily.
Perhaps you are more special than I am that you have “your” sacred music because “I” don’t have sacred music. I participate in the Mass that is approved by my Bishop. If you chose not to, don’t. Find yourself a church that strictly follows the pre-Vatican II liturgy and be happy. I happen to love the Mass in english and I love participating in the celebration.
The “old” Catholic liturgy was never devisive. Further, it was refined, stable and effectively universal for centuries. Now its often hardly recognizable from one diocese to another, if not between neighboring parishes.
Well, as I said, find yourself a “traditional” Mass and be happy.
I’ll say it again; the Lord’s Prayer came directly from Christ; not the OPC, and not the USCCB, and we have no place insinuating our temporal tastes on it.
And Christ didn’t chant it nor did He speak it in Latin. Should be be doing the Mass in aramaic? Has the Church been wrong all this time to allow latin?

It seems to me that the words of the prayer are just as powerful and received by the Father when it is spoken, chanted or sung along with a modern tune. Isn’t that the important thing?

Peace

Tim

Mass in Aramaic? The Maronites do!

Back in the 70s or 80s we had the spectre of music from Jesus Christ, Superstar being included in Masses sometimes:eek: .

While driving I sometimes feel like breaking out in Gregorian, particularly the Gloria and Pater Noster. Mercifully, nobody can hear me at freeway speeds with the windows rolled up:D .

I wasn’t even going to post on this thread… but then I saw the magic words:

Krispy Kreme!!!

They beat the heck out of Dunkin Donuts!!!

Glazed rasberry bismarck?? Now we’re talkin’!!! Oh, and don’t get me started on those oreo cookie creme filled’s they came out with not too long ago. It was a good thing those were just a monthly promotion or I’d have had to spent a lot of money on larger clothes!!!

Oh, and I don’t care for singing the Our Father. The campus parish I attended always sang it, but then they’d change it up two or three times a year and it got so confusing! We didn’t have hymnals, just the words on powerpoint so you could never tell what the tune was going to be. I’d rather say the prayer and be able to focus on what I’m praying than spend most of it trying to get back on key!

See, I really am on topic!

(we even have an all-male choir forming for Midnight Mass Christmas. PM DJRakowski, he is joining)
D’oh! Thanks for reminding me! I have to call the organist about that today. I just hope we have enough dudes willing to join.

And, not only an all-male choir, but also Gregorian chant and Latin hymns 👍

There is a family that does music sometimes in my parish and they don’t always use the hymnal either. They project the words on the church wall.

During Mass???!!!
Yep! You heard (read) right! Just please don’t get me started on this parish. Dh still likes to go there but everytime we go there now (we went to that parish twice last month!!) I get more and more irritated with everything.

The last time I was sooo irritated because for once we got to mass pretty early, but instead of being able to quiet my mind in preparation for Mass all I was able to do was get more and more aggravated at the “gossip party” going on around me! No reverence at all!! Uggh! God forgive me for my anger!

Well, you just need to tell your hubby that in order to go there you must do Krispy Kreme after. Yum!

It appears you’ve learned that Catholic congregations never “chanted” the Lord’s Prayer as common liturgy. That’s a start.

Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, California, is the first “congregation” that springs to mind. Also, we just had a Eucharistic and Marian Conference here in Reno in which the congregation participated in latin chant responses.
I live quite close to Thomas Aquinas College, and have been there many times. We’re looking forward to Mass in their beautiful new chapel. But TAC is hardly a typical parish. They have one indult TLM a month and enforce *very *strict social and dress codes.

I asked because see many posters going on about chant as if it is and has always been common. Its always been fairly rare in non-monastic liturgy in the US, even pre-VC-II. I heard it only because I grew up in a parish associated with a seminary, but it was still only sung in Solemn High Masses at Christmas and Easter. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that only a small minority of Catholics have actually heard Gregorian chant, even pre-VC-II. There seems to be a new popularity, and thats great. But its still a rare thing.

LOL… yep aramaic it should be then 👍
I think it has more to do with what is in your heart when you say/sing/chant the the Our Father than the media (is that the word I want?) in which it is delivered. I understand that different people have different preferences… none of them are necessarily “the right one”. I personally do not hold hands (though my protestant cousins and I did at my Grandma’s Catholic funeral) or lift my arms during the Our Father, but for some it is a great symbol. It is not my place to judge. I just dislike it when some stranger grabs my hand during the prayer. I don’t react (out of charity), but it does bother me

I completely agree! At least one person on this thread has gotten my point!

Peace

When one looks at the ingredients on a box of Krispy Kremes, no where does it say calories were added. Therefore they must be calorie free, don’t ya think?
Here’s a tip that very few people know…

If you just stick with the broken donuts and donut pieces, the calories “spill out” of the breaks and you no longer have to worry about them! Same holds true for broken cookies!

True story… honest!!

😃

I have to remember that!!!

Okay, okay! We’ve got to stop talking about Krispy Kremes!!! I’m adding inches to my hips just thinking about them!!!

Oh, I have a good idea for our two families, then! We need to do a Cici’s party some time during my Christmas break - that is, if y’all are planning on sticking around town for the week between Christmas and New Year’s.
Sounds Yum-O!

Our father was a No 1 hit in Britain af ew years ago, it was sung by Cliff Richard.
